Hi Yomee…
Have you checked into the regional contacts page for Australia? There's some stuff going on from time to time, I blieve. And New Zealand has a regional burn as well (in January, I think).
Hang out and get to know people around here. There’s a few other down-under burners on the boards.
Just for conversation, how did you find out about Burning Man?
And yes... read the First Timer's Guide and the Survival Guide lots and lots.

Choose a camp by liking the people in it, after all they are your family for the week. You don't have to go with a Theme Camp, just a bunch of people you like and trust is fine. It there is camp whose mission appeals, contact them and see if they are looking for more people, and what their expectations of members are.

Looking for a camp, just make sure it's clear what you'll do for the camp, and what they'll do for you. Also make sure you can trust them but plan on them not keeping to their part.
Meeting people local to you is the best idea, so you can build some trust before you trust them when you're half way around the world. Just about any camp at Burningman will welcome just about anyone, so even if you don't like the people you go with, you'll meet people there who you do like. Don't feel tied down to a camp, meet new people and make new friends.

Last year we had a girl with us that did not particularly care for our BM Camp style. She ended up at contraptionist's for the whole week while we spun music and got high all week. I swear I only saw here three times last year. You might want to make sure that all of the people in your car know when you are leaving. I ended up waiting for that girl for a couple of hours before I could sit in exodus traffic. Oh well, it's burning man, planning is futile.
