After a careful, methodical review of the 174 posts over on the Yahoo group for Stop BM, one thing is perfectly clear. This group will not answer questions that directly challenge their POV. Instead they are too busy worrying about USA Today polls and their media coverage. If you have doubts about it look for yourself.
Another tidbit of info is that Marion was on a local Nevada radion station on their 6 am Sunday morning community radio spot addressing the concerns raised by these people. It's nice to see the ORG responding. I don't have full details of that interview but hopefully it will surface soon.

I don't know what EIR or for that matter an EIS stands for. I assume some sort of environmental assesment. Frankly sure... I'd be down with that. I think Burning Man can address the issue of improving its environmental impact on the Playa. However if we are told basically "no you shouldn't be here", then I think we have to consider whether or not this is an acceptible answer to us. I mean would the assesment allow for ranching in the area, or mining? I'd say that we are far more valuable as a cultural force then a few beef ranches or mines.
So far that is only suggestion from this group, and it's posted as "one person's opinion". It isn't escapism, so much as an opportunity to try something new and see if it works. For me, and I think for thousands of others it gives us a chance to consider how we are living our lives, and how we can live them better. This in part greatly benefits our environment as it stands to reduce our impact as consumers.

If there were any vegetation it would be crushed, and the soil compacted so as to prevent future growth. It just seems so strange to attack an event that takes place in Black Rock when pretty much the rest of the world is going to hell in a handbasket. It defies logic really.
This is just one of the challenges we have to face. If we get stupid about it and ignore what these guys have to say we do so at our own peril. Yeah, we do a pretty good job of cleaning up after ourselves, but it could be better. I can see them say "yeah right look at the rebar left in the ground or frog pond", but really... when else can that many people get together without any sort of garbage collection, and basically leave so little behind. Have any of these guys been to Burning Man? Have you seen how generally clean it is? That's because almost everyone there is mindful of cleaning up after themselves and their fellows.
I think we need to attack them on the points that are questionable, but also examine how we can continue to reduce our impact. I mean that's what we do right? Evolve, and do so quickly.

As I pointed out you guys started with a super heavy handed approach "to get our attention". Well... there are dozens of ways to get our attention, and direct change within a community. Stop Burning Man- clearly states their motive. I've read this entire thread and several others as well as carefully inspected their rogue web site. They are total BULLSHIT. Look, this alannon character and stopbm.org are a bad joke, and with time that will come out.
HE'S NOT EVER GOING TO HAVE A REAL DISCUSSION WITH SOMEONE WHERE HE DOES ANYTHING BUT KEEP WHINING ABOUT WHAT HE CONSIDERS HIS STRONG TALKING POINTS. He's already proven that he will not answer questions directly (he's had PLENTY of opportunity to do that- I see no reason for his behavior to change). He's obviously a liar in saying his goal is not to shut down BM, since he offers no alternatives or suggestions about how BM could be cleaner or have less impact, and will not share any information he might have (I suspect he has none) that would show a direct link between BM and any trash or environmental impact, which is what someone who really just wanted BM to be cleaner would do.
He's either;
just an asshole who has some axe to grind with BM or someone within BM,
or;
he's enjoying the notoriety that attacking BM is earning him.
Either way, there can be no rational compromise-based discourse with someone with these motivations. He's stated himself he absolutely will NOT compromise, but doesn't even state what actions on BM's part would satisfy him. That sure sounds to me like someone who just wants to elevate himself by setting himself up as a crusader against BM.
He won't listen to logic when someone tells him that the water drawn off by BM is a tiny fraction of the total water taken from that pond throughout the year for farming, ranching, etc. So what logical discussion do you think you're going to have with someone who won't listen to reason, and won't produce evidence or data refuting you?
ALL HUMAN ACTIVITES, even growing food have some negative impact on the environment, so even if BM's impact on the environment were .000001% (just to pick a crazy stupid number to show how inflexible this yahoo is) of what it is now, this guy would still bitch and moan and complain about that.
So please, people, UNDERSTAND, once and for all, that this clown's motivation is NOT environmental, and it's NOT altruistic, and he does NOT have any REAL EVIDENCE to back up his claims.

Not to be super paranoid, but I don't think joining the Yahoo group is such a great idea. These guys have proven that they are more interested in getting press then they are in talking. The last thing we need is them pointing to a huge number of registered users, and saying "see... all these people are against Burning Man.

I joined it not to boost their numbers allthough they get that benefit; I simply want to keep tabs on what their doing. It's like any forum they speak in online a few of us can go in and offer a counterbalance. And some of us are doing that.
I understand the arguments about feeding the troll, but this is a dangerous troll. One that must be watched and slapped back to reality when they start trying to suck in taxdollars for misguided environmental studies to support their fact finding fishing expeditions. Again, the ORG can and will defend itself. But as for the tax dollars, I have a voice in how their spent just like all of us do. I don't like what the Stop people want to do with that money so I'm going to speak up about it...here, in the media, and to other channels. I encourage everyone to find their voice and do the same. Empowerment is a wonderful thing...and in this case we outnumber them. We will win.

I am teaching them to think for themselves
not to be sheep.
not to be spoon fed
I am teaching them to enjoy the world around them.
I am teaching then not to lie.
I am teachign them how to analyze a isue and come to conclusions

Speaking of name calling and lies, and since this thread refuses to die, I have another observation/theory: allanon or another another of his tiny crew has visited this board before this whole brouhaha under he charming nom-de-plume "WillSmallPenisRoger". To wit:
i) WSPR disappeared about the time this all started, making me think Rex had found a better away to harass Burningman than simply trolling the boards.
ii) Both used the tactic of posting multiple threads all over the board.
iii) Both seemed to have a serious hate going on against the org (don't deny it allanon, all anyone has to do is go back and read your early posts). Both often expressed their spite with nasty personal comments about senior staff members.
iv) WSPR obviously knew a bit about who was who in the senior staff and had access to gossip about them. We now know Allanon was an early burner/cacaphonist, and I find it easy to believe he not only knew these folks back then, but still has access to gossip about them.
v) The entity/puppet known as "StopBmorg" first showed up on WSPR's threads, supporting his stupid assertions and ressurecting his threads when they were fading, then appeared as part of the whole "stopburningman" thing.
vi). They're both obnoxious assholes. Not that that proves much, as the world is full of obnoxious assholes, but I thought I'd point it out.

I have not known Michael Michael, larry harvey, or John Law or others for 10 years or so. plus i don't knwo anyoen lse that knows them.

Well if you do a search of BLM documents you will see i have been involved with BLM and the blackrock region for 4+ years on their records many more of the record with regards to BLM
