Another Hello from Australia!

Hey guys.

First timer here. Have my tickets; going on an adventure for a non-specific amount of time with BM as a tidy little stop over.

Okay, volunteering - What can I do if I am only in SF for a few days before hand but will be on the playa for 7 days? I went a bit crazy and signed up to volunteer to alot of stuff, but everyone seems to be having things happen beforehand and I don't know if that means I cannot contribute on the playa.

I want to do something that will attach me to a community of people that stick together and socialise.

Any ideas?

Being itâ€™s your first year It's probably best to no over book before hand it will take some time to adjust to the environment ( in many ways ) the burning Man organization has volunteer opportunities with ice and coffee sales along with a lot of other things you can sign up and list your interests and talents by going to the volunteer section of the main sight. also in or near the information tent by center camp there is a volunteer board with opportunities posted.

My first burn, I arrived as they opened so there was a lot going on. I wandered around and saw many people who looked like they needed a hand, so I asked if they needed a hand. People were very appreciative and I got to work on a bunch of neat projects. One was a neat two story pyramid structure which was some guys personal shelter. He was putting it together himself and had a pulley system for the second floor. He made all the pieces at home but had never put it together so there were some problems. He really appreciated the help and he had a few minor problems, which were fun to help him troubleshoot.

If you volunteer ahead of time then you're somewhat obligated and it may not be what you expect. If you show up and help as needed and as you want, you may have a better experience. Once you decide to embark on your own projects you'll have a better idea of what you're getting yourself into.

Work the gate on Tuesday at night. If you liked it (as most do), do it again on Wednesday and Thursday during the day. There is no way to meet more people at burning man than at the gates.
