Looking for lightweight half sphere with 7-8' radius

Post by McKraken » Tue Sep 30, 2003 7:25 pm

creating an art car concept that requires a lightwieght dome that can be mounted on top of a golf cart canopy and extend to within a foot of the ground. Probably something in a plastic/polymer material, half sphere would work well for concept. Any ideas for supplier?

have you considered building a high frequency dome? the higher the frequency, the "rounder" it is. for lightweight you might be able to use some kind of plastic pipe. it could all be thinner if you can make up for the strength by bracing from the frame of the golfcart underneath.

The higher the frequency of the dome, the more pipe you have to use.
A 2v 7' diameter dome would be fairly round with 75 feet of pipe, a 3v or 4v dome would be 250' of pipe at 1-2 feet per strut. This might be over a hundred pounds, I'm really not sure, but it doesn't sound that bad to do either frequency dome.

Chickenfish may have already suggested this, but I don't speak chickenfish, so I can't tell fer sher.....Even lighter than PVC is fiberglass rod- you can purchase short lengths (about a yard) that were intended as fenceposts for electric garden fence, at your local farm supply store, for under a buck per. About a pencil in thickness.
