Oral Sex And Pot Linked To Cancer

(WebMD) Certain head and neck cancers may be tied to sexual activity, marijuana use, and human papillomavirus (HPV ) type 16.

That news comes from Johns Hopkins University's Maura Gillison, MD, PhD, and colleagues, who studied 240 people with head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (head and neck cancers). Some of their cancers tested positive for HPV 16; others were negative for HPV 16.

The patients answered questions about their lifestyle. For comparison, 322 cancer-free people answered the same lifestyle questions.

Here's what the researchers learned:

# Head and neck cancers that were positive for HPV 16 were associated with having more oral sex partners and smoking more marijuana.

# Head and neck cancers that were negative for HPV 16 weren't linked to sex or marijuana. Instead, they were tied to smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, and having poor oral hygiene.

Because the study was observational, it's not clear if those risk factors caused cancer.

Based on the findings, Gillison's team argues that HPV 16-negative and HPV 16-positive head and neck squamous cell carcinomas should be considered two different types of cancer.

The study appears in Tuesday's advance online edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Just more proof that living to be a hundred means giving up everything that makes you want to live to a hundred. I'll die young, thanks.

I noticed you kind of glossed over the article's use of the term 'may'. I'm not entirely sure, but it sounds to me that the article in question (or at least the headline) 'may' be complete bullshit. That's just about as accurate as saying that the universe 'may' have been created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

To further beat a dead horse, I can't help but notice that B.D.'s thread title - "Oral Sex And Pot Linked To Cancer" - completely leaves out the word 'may'. That's quite a jump there.

Okay, I've been doing some quick and dirty (VERY dirty) calculations and my studies clearly show that if that article were true, Mozy would've RIP'd about 1968 or so. Probably '69.

Anti-M? Don't let her proper demeanor fool you. Sure, she wrote that she doesn't "moke spot". Notice that she didn't say anything about eating it? I'm sayin' that's not all she's been eatin' either. Again, I've calculated that she'd have never seen the 80's if that article were true.

Okay, enough's enough. I know po' Bitter Dan was going for the joke and NOT trying to be the New England Journal of Medicine, but I had to do something about it or I'd probably hear it reported as fact on the six o'clock news tomorrow.

First of all, the "proof" statement was just a way to get the quote "Living to a hundred means giving up everything that makes you want to live to be a hundred" into the mix.

Well you just might. I didn't make this shit up, it's from a medical journal. That means that it's now up for peer review. If you are correct and correlation does not equal causation then it will come to light in short time. Of course, you and I will never hear that part of it because that's not the message the media wants to send.

It's a nice headline and all, but the only inference I can make based on the information is that smoking pot and giving head makes it more likely you'll catch HPV 16, which is something we could wipe out if we pushed everyone to get the HPV vaccine.

well, I do remember in one of my sex ed classes being told that Jewish women had a lower incidence of cervical cancer that goyim. They tied that to circumcision. I don't know how "scientific' that was.
