Transportation on the Playa
I've actually seen some of these on the playa:

I have been trying to get the car to BM for quite a while, and the theme this year inspired me to make my dream come true. The phone number is real, but I am planning on getting some cover up for it with something more playa appropriate---ie, Save the Man, Burn the Man, Man for President etc.
I have not heard back yet from the DMV to see if I can bring this to the playa, but this is the ultimate mutant vehicle and I hope I will not have a problem. Transporting from Massachusetts is major and I can't make any plans until I hear back from them. We'll see if I can pull this off this year.

It sure looks like a real mutant vehicle to me! The BRC DMV requires "radical" lighting to grant a night time license, so make sure to set it up for big visual impact in the dark.
Does it have a loud ringer? Or maybe a busy signal? The possibilities seem endless...

I have a sound system in the car that play various phone related songs like ELO's--Telephone Line, Jim Croce--Operator, Merry Wilson--Hey Baby I'm Your Telephone Man etc. The most popular sounds is just a phone ringing. That's the horn. Go figure!
I am installing some "underphone" lighting and some temporary handset lights in hopes of getting a night time permit.

Playa-ready segway
Playa-ready segway you won't be embarrassed to be seen on:

Video at http://gizmodo.com/377498/segway-rmp-is ... ine+worthy shows a guy crouched on it while it rolls around.
Estimated price, according to gizmodo: 50 grand.

I suggest you light the silhouette by bounce lighting or some other means.hsdavis wrote:I have a sound system in the car that play various phone related songs like ELO's--Telephone Line, Jim Croce--Operator, Merry Wilson--Hey Baby I'm Your Telephone Man etc. The most popular sounds is just a phone ringing. You must be visible to pedestrians from all angles.
It's a higher standard than highway lighting.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

That's a great suggestion. I will pick up some lights to go on top of the vehicle and attempt to light the entire phone. I was going to use some strings of tube lights that are sold at Christmas time. I like your idea better.

If I can help, email me (not pm).
Fluorescents are the most efficient.
LEDs are more compact.
Quartz is the most compact for the amount of light.
It seems it is easier to see the full shape of something dimly lit, than to see what bright marker lights are on.
Try it yourself.
Also you can use solid red reflective material like diamondstripe.
Intensely bright and it works when you have the power off in any light source.
If you enable the bbcode on your profile, the quotes will work.

Although we don't drive the van on the playa, we drive it to BRC and camp with it at Burning Man. Danger Ranger took a photo of our van at Maker Faire, and we have a link to our photo of him taking the photo. :->
Louise and I did an amateur radio Special Event Station at Maker Faire this year, hence the ham radio magnetic signs on the van.

Yeah, that's the Busycle. It's based in Palo Alto, the guy who built it (with a group of friends) did it to promote bicycle greenways. I rode my 6-wheeled pedal-powered mutant vehicle with the Busycle and the Mayor of Palo Alto on a tour of Xmas lights this past winter. It's a crazy machine! We've been trying to get him to take it to Burning Man.phil wrote:
