How do you set up a playa bar?

Post by blueballs » Mon Mar 17, 2008 1:55 pm

I was reading Lonestar's food sharing thread and was wondering how one would go about setting up a neighborhood bar. Last year we had a simple and excellent bar down the street from us that was located at 6:30 and Estuary. So what is required to get set up a bar and get a location like that? Are there both up and up and DL methods of doing this?

God, how I miss the pickle-tini bar near Center Camp. It was so much fun to dance to Peaches while drinking Pickle-tinis.

take some time and effort to calculate precisely how much booze and mixers you will need over the week...then multiply by 5. Dont forget a sound system (doesnt have to be big) and brings tons of LED lights. Then youre in bidness!

Aw not you too! It's Lone-stoner not Lonestar, I didn't spend all those years getting baked alone to be called a star! :P

Honestly I think you could get away with havng a little bar sans permit, a lot of folks do, and if you get hassled just insist you're not serving to anyone but your campmates. As far as location goes you have to work your way up if you want a piece of prime Playa real estate.

Setting up a neighborhood bar is as simple as getting some booze (you don't have to be open all the time and when you run out of booze you shut down), someplace to serve, and hopefully some kind of shelter from the sun/wind/dust. Other than the basic supplies you do not need anything special such as a permit, just don't serve food and make sure you are checking ID's of people who look of questionable age.

Thanks for all of the replies. I was mainly trying to figure out if we would need a permit. It would seem that the answer is no as long as we stay away from food.

I will send you a PM and gladly listen to all that you have to share about your bar wisdom. Your sig photo suggests that you are a good man to turn to in these matters.

I have thankfully managed to avoid the hipster sensation known as PBR. I once had a sip of my dad's St. Pauli Girl light ( SUPER GROSS ) and a few sips of Coors ( NORMAL GROSS ) that my landlord gave me.

I guess that since my friends and I were old goats ( late 30's ) we never ran into anyone ID'ing us on the Playa and I never saw it happen. Have you actually seen people get ID'd at a playa bar?

Lone-stoner: Sorry about my dyslexic mis-interpretation of your name. Buy yourself a good beer and send me the karmic tab.

Hell yes! I card anyone who looks young. I'm not about to get busted so some kid can get drunk off my liquor.

You don't need much to set it up. You may want to register a theme camp if you want a place laid out for you when you arrive on one of the closer streets or to piggyback on another camp if someone will let you. If you NEED to arrive before the event to set something up you will need to be part of a theme camp.

You cannot serve to anyone under 21. I have not heard any tales of people getting busted for not carding, nor have I ever been carded there, but if you're not careful things could go sour fast.

I have heard about one bar getting in trouble for serving in glasses and not properly washing them (a hard thing to do out there). In that case you may need a permit as if you're serving food. I don't know the details, just something I heard around. It's better to have a "bring your own cup" policy anyway, IMO.

Any yes, bring lots of whatever you're serving. Many bars run low quickly

Thank you for those links. That was quite a read and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the work and forethought that it takes to make BM a reality.

what I've learned in my 3 years of mobile barwenching:

#1 get alcohols (and if you ROCK get hot dogs and otter pops)
#2 put them in people
#3 post a sign saying that "You must be 21" because misrepresentation is a felony in NV and any 16 year old ravers in eyeshot of that sign that drink anyway are at least as liable as you are!
Teh mother of invention
