"All Americans should have a chance to improve their country. They should not be shut out of their government by two major parties that, in varing degrees, have turned Washington into corporate-occupied territory....The First Amendment applies to candidates as well as voters. Telling people not to run is like telling them not to speak, assemble and petition. Our country needs more debate inside the electoral arena. It does not need the political bigotry of candidate exclusion and denial of voter choice."
Ralph Nader, USA Today, March 5, 2008.
Sounds like a solid message. I cannot understand why the majority here think these values make him an asshole and gain his supporters a "Fuck You" salute.

Nader is not a viable candidate, period.
Even the time I've spent posting about him in this thread is too much time, IMHO.
My vote and my campaign donations (with what little bit of money I do have right now) have went to Hillary...and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

The time for him to have declared his candidacy was sometime in 2007. The general opinion here seems to be that he isn't making a serious run at the White House, he's just trying to get TV face time.
In addition to that, many people who voted for him previously based on his goals and stated objectives--which were good--split off votes from Democrats who held basically the same goals, and since the race was so tight that skewed the election back to the guy who stood for just the opposite. More important than the fact that he lost is the idea that he shot the chances for those values to make to the White House.
The idea seemed like a good one: Protest the Republicrat stronghold on Washington. The reality is that we're worse off now.
I do reject, however, the arrogant Democrat party notion that everybody who voted for Nader would have otherwise voted for the Dems. The reality is, they're probably just as corrupt and inept as the Republicans.
But, that's why people think he's an asshole now. Ron Paul modified the strategy and lost too, but at least he posed a threat to Republicans in the primaries.

wow i didn't know so many people got riled up over nader...
Why are you guys so pissed at the people who voted for nader that made the election go to bush?
Why dont you get pissed at the IDIOTS WHO VOTED FOR BUSH DIRECTLY.
In 2004 it DID NOT MATTER TO ME that kerry wasn't perfect. If any of these voters had any common sense, it was obvious by 2004 that bush was and still is a puppet of epic proportions and it anything he had to say sounded like an outright lie! There was no sincerity or genuineness left in the man by 2004, yet idiots voted for him. And our country still tolerates the BULL SHIT he spouts out. If he had a 3rd term 50% of this country would probably still vote for him and his side kick asshole cheney. eh! i'm done.

Oh, I'm [issed at the damn fuckheads who fixed the fucking election. I have a friend, Republican, who blames Sandra Day O'Connor. I still think that Renquist and Thomas should have recused themselves. Now that he's not Chief Justice maybe Renquist agrees.

Unfortunately, the Democrats in Florida are once again proving that it's impossible to "fix" the election system there. They can't even do it right without screwing it up.
According to CNN, Florida's state law prohibits them from doing vote by mail unless a private contractor handles the election. I'm sure Haliburton would jump at such an opportunity, but Florida law also prohibits releasing voter records to contractors.
The Florida Democrat party really shouldn't holler about elections being rigged until they can throw a Democrat-only primary without fucking it up.
This is, what, the third time in a row now? Fourth?
