Fernley Flood

Post by Dusty Pony » Sun Jan 06, 2008 3:08 pm

It is so sad seeing all those pics of the flood that washed through Fernley. Fernley is our last big watering hole before the playa. Just think of how many times you've stopped at the restaurants and gas stations there - those people that helped you probably live right there!

I found two sites that are gathering aid for th people that live there: The Red Cross, of course, is collecting donations at: http://www.nevada.redcross.org

and funny enough Barak Obama's Nevada Office is halping as well. An article with more info on that follows.

Does anyone else know of another way to help form afar? I am on the east coast, so there isn't much hands on I can do, but I am sure even a little money will halp these folks.

Peace, Anne-Marie

Dear Friend,

As you've probably heard, a levee in nearby Fernley, NV broke, flooding much of the town. Tonight, 4,000 people in this small town have flooded homes with untold damages to their property.

Today, we're coming together to help our neighbors in need.

We're collecting donated items at our Reno office on Sunday, between 9am and 11am, that the people in Fernley need:

Sleeping bags
Air mattresses
Blankets
Pillows
Kids' clothing
Warm clothing
Socks
Shoes
Toiletries
Officials are also asking people who can provide hotel rooms or motor boats to help out. If you can provide these things, please contact our Obama HQ in Reno and they can facilitate delivering those resources.

Obama Office -- Reno HQ
141 E. Pueblo St., Suite B
Reno, NV 89502
Phone 775.333.9900

Please bring any of the items listed above to our Reno office. Volunteers from our campaign will be traveling to Fernley tomorrow to deliver these items. If you'd like to help in this effort, please contact our office.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those in Fernley tonight,

David Cohen
Nevada State Director
Obama for America

Several of my friends/camp members live there. They were unaffected though.
They have some friends/family staying with because of the flooding.

Flooding sucks ass.. don't try to drive through that shit unless you know for sure the depth and flatness of the raod and have at least a truck. Here in FL there is always flooding with bad rain and bad floods with the huirricane sasons that are active. Never underestimate the power of that water vs. the suface area its hitting. When I lived in PA we had a creek that the unpaved road went through. Normally cars went around to other roads but those of us with off road shit used it all the time. After some bad rain that water could be really decieving lookin all calm and not that deep but once you went in you would start to get pulled. I lost count how many kids in jeeps and shit that I pulled outta there with the winch.

I saw a Burners without Borders post, you can donate via paypal there.

http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org/

There was a post on tribe and now I don't see it. If the links don't work on the BWB site, I think the donations are handled through the BRAF, earmark it for Fernley BWB flood relief? Anyone else know for sure? I'll keep an eye out for more info.

Looks like the floodwaters are freezing. Damned bad luck, and you know how quick the gov't is on flood relief. :(

A few days ago they opened the "valves" to let the water flow again.
