Improv players?

Post by Chaotic_Weevil » Mon Mar 17, 2008 11:10 pm

Hey all.

I'm new to Burning Man so I don't really know how to go about asking about stuff, but I think I'm in the right spot so, yeah, there we go.

Anyhoo, I'm an improviser in a group known as The Cherry Spitz Fan Club. I was thinking about rounding up the gang and doing some performances out on the playa. Anyone down for a little improv jam? With toast perhaps? Maybe some butter? We don't need to watch calories out at Burning Man. Yeah!

Anyone know what the hell I'm talking about?

great idea, Chaotic!

I forgot the name, but there is a camp that has a stage and equipment for folks to use to live out their rock-n-roll fantasies.

I have an archtop electric and battery amp and would love to join you for some deep playa jam session. Keep us posted!

Dan stop picking on the newbies Hehehehe

Dan is just ribbing ya cuz he knows Burning Man is one big improvisation. You will fit right in. Don’t limit your self to stages or locations some of my best playa moments came from people just walking by the camp.

A Violin player and A Capella grupe hold sweet memories for me.

Awesome.

Yeah, I think it be way cool to, like, grab people walking by and do a bunch of short-form, audience-interactive improv games on some makeshift stage or something. I think Burning Man would be a perfect audience for all our crazy crap.

I'll monitor these boards for that performing group and/or maybe get myself a portable stage. I hope there are other peeps with improv backgrounds cuz it be kickass to get a huge long-form going.

[okay for this scene, I'll need a city, an occupation, and a skin color!]

Well crap.

Nobody on my team wants to spend the money to go to BM. Wimps.

But I really got this itch to put togheter a kickass Burning Man themed show on the playa. I was thinking of setting up a mini-stage and also putting together some gonzo performance improv pieces while wandering the playa.

If anyone is based in So. Cal and wants to meet up with me, I'd like to form a special team for this. Anyone got an acting/improv background and/or is just really nutty? I can use you. We should talk and brainstorm some wacky stunts.

My nephew's improve group got invited to the Edinburgh festival. They had to pay for their own hotel and venue, but I'm still proud.

*sigh wistfully* I love improv, I was in the first and original improv team at my high school. Dating Game; kleptomaniacs, and man eating unicorns..those were the days... I still am obsessive about improv, participating and/or watching whenever I can...

Hear, hear!

Here's the deal: I'm looking to put together a mobile art project. Our mission will be RANDOM ACTS OF THEATER COMMITTED ON THE PLAYA AGAINST UNSUSPECTING AUDIENCES - Guerilla theater. I got this idea in 2006, and this is the year it will happen. We don't need a stage, but we need other things.

We're going to need enough actors to create critical mass and we'll have to camp together. That means setting up a camp too, or finding a host camp.

I'm thinking both improv and scripted sketches.

Who's in? What day will you be there?

Ivan

I'm kind of a regular here on e-playa and my son has asked me to respond to this thread. He is an actor from the LA area and is attending with me this year (his first time, my 10th). He would love to participate with you - please e-mail or PM me with info.

Yes. This sounds exactly what I was thinking. I've never been to BM so I wasn't sure if this had been done before. SO, yes, I'd like to join up with this, maybe even suggest a few bits and games we've done in my group in this sort of format.

Do we necessarily have to all camp together? I'd prefer to stay flexible considering I'm probably camping with my gyspy friends. What not just have a meet up time? And if any of these players are LA or OC based (So. cal), then we can have some practices together before BM.

Egg-zactly. That's why we have to camp together to make this work.

If you're a virgin, then you won't have any experience in cat-herding. It's hard enough to do even if you're in the same camp. You want to camp someplace else and meet up???? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha <catch breath> hahahahahaaaaa.... <catch breath>

crunch time!

MOBILE ART PROJECT NEEDS ACTORS

With the exception of art cars, nearly all other art at Burning Man is statically located in one place. Hence, I am looking for actors to join in this great MOBILE ART PROJECT.

The DREAM VENDORS (working title) will be a guerrilla theater group with the mission of COMMITTING RANDOM ACTS OF THEATER AGAINST UNSUSPECTING DENIZENS OF BLACK ROCK CITY. There will be no stage, and there will be no mercy. We will have political, comical, whimsical, dramatical, sophical sketch comedy and/or improv that will occur whenever and wherever we damn feel like it.

This is, of course, a logistical nightmare of the first order. Therefore! Any actor committed to this project (or committed to another asylum) must also agree to camp together with the other Dream Vendors (camp location unknown at this time). The purpose for this is two-fold: First, cat-herding on playa time is a fucking come down and I am not willing to subject myself or any other sentient being to this task. (On the other hand, if you would like to do this and you are NOT a sentient being...) Second, it will give us an opportunity to rehearse, to improv, to break bread together, to drink and to generally stew into a cohesive troupe.

Who's in? What day do you plan to arrive on the Playa?

Please contact me ASAP. I will only do this if we reach critical mass, which I figure is about 2 dozen actors. Less than that and we're not likely to make this happen. If we don't reach critical mass, let's say 24 actors by May 24th, then I'll scratch the project.

So email me right now!! Really, right now!! Really, what are you waiting for?
DreamVendors @ noisesoff .com
Send my your name, playa name, alien name, email addy, underwear size, phone number, what day you plan to arrive and the registration number of your secret decoder ring.

Your faithful bard,
Ivan, the Bad Elf
