Here is where many of the issues surrounding and relating to the event, can be discussed. All of what you say has merit. Also, I don't believe that I'm spouting lies simply because I've never been to this event (though I know many who have). I'd like to believe that I'm an educated individual; in no way am I saying anything new. It appears that everyone here knows how to recycle.

Let me just say that I can appreciate people who are passionate about their role in the Burning Man community and also in the larger global arena. People who are aware of their responsibility to society and to the environment are, in my mind, ideal burners.

I don't know what to expect at Burning Man, but that's part of the fun. Meeting all of you there would be a treat because you could teach me a thing or two. I guess, ultimately I'm playing the devil's advocate here. I don't think anyone who has responded to this form, other than our dear wonderhope, would openly admit here that what they are doing by purchasing a ticket and participating in this event, is contributing to a problem that we now face and will continue to deal with for the unforeseeable future.

You get out of it what you put into it. Same with a camping trip. Having high hopes for personal growth is a person choice.

In case it wasn't clear, the event takes place on the playa and there's little impact from the event on the trails, springs, etc, which are what that letter talks about. Burners have been active in helping restore the springs, which the letter advocates. The surrounding hills have an ecosystem, but that's not where we camp. The playa itself is about as lifeless as it gets.

That money article has nothing to do with what we're talking about. I'm not going to try to follow your attempts to change the subject.

Successful race engines are on the efficient side actually and cleaner than you would think.
Efficiency is power.
Autobahn studies show that at high speeds, one type of pollution goes up but the other comes down.
Pollution per mile is pretty consistent at 70 or 150.
Heavily loaded engines are more efficient than under light load.

A Formula One engine is probably cleaner than a street car.

Energy and other logistics all track back to population, the real issue.
Everything else is misdirected.

That's not to say they're not trying to make positive changes. This year saw the changeover from leaded to unleaded fuel....here's a NY Times article on the subject.

I'm so tempted to launch into a long missive on this because it's a subject I've studied since I was barely a teenager...let's just say that racing has helped bring innovative new ideas back to the production line for manufacturers over the years and leave it at that. It's actually greener under the surface than it appears. Too often though people view NASCAR through glasses tinted with stereotypes or glazed by media spin and they never dig deeper to find out what's really going on. It's a damn shame too.

Nascar is dull to watch, but it is more difficult to drive than it appears.
The cars are far more sophisticated than they appear as well.
I love to watch Pro-Rally and unlimited road racing myself.

I think the question of how green burning man is, is summed up by the idea that we could heat up a million poptarts with the energy consumed.
I do like the idea of plugging directly into the grid somehow appealing.
