100 mph winds not likely. 50-60 mph gusts more probable. 30 mph sustained winds occassionally. This is based on only three years experience, but I was there all of the infamous 2007.

Pinemom--I saw a craft magazine feature on making windchimes from broken and abandoned lawn chairs.

Does anyone else wonder if they'll decide she brought them to gift and decided to help her?

Anyone that tries to tell you we get 100+ mph winds is on crack. 100mph would knock you right off your feet and blow you away. Gusts of 60-70 TOPS.

Not sure as i wasn't there. It was a very dusty year, which translates into a windy year. I think that's what's being said.

Lots large dust storms, some rain, and an odd huge dust storm right when the bulk of people where trying to leave.

The day we got married, Thursday, we had it all....wind sun rain rainbows...you can get anything you want at alices restaurant!

The winds were indeed clocked somehwere (I think I read?) 85 mph, at highest.
But after living in Nv for most of my life, 85 mph here is alot differnt then 85 mph, in most cities.

I hate to say it, but I was miserable last year. Hot as hell, the dust storms got dust in all my stuff (blankets/food/clothes/shoes) and broke my tent poles.

If there's wind like that again, I'd have to make sure the windchimes didn't turn into random impaling flying objects.

Last year was a dusty fuck! But fun.

Thursday we set out on a day/art tour to see a giant cloud coming, Stopped to dance at the Deep End, wild goggled, masked dancers appearing, disappearing out of the white fog. Back to camp to see if it was still there (the neighbor's tent a broken kite). Stopped at the Duck Pond to tie a bunch of trucker/fisherman's knots on the bar tent while the wife took break-dance lessons in the storm. My nephew arrived and missed a turn, led a line of cars a couple miles out into the desert, missing the city. Critical Tits was sandblasted. Exodus Monday we threw everything together helterskelter in 50 mph estimated winds. Last look around for buried shit, heard a rumbling, turned around just in time to jump out of the way of a 55 gal drum mooping across the desert (the hills had to have been full of shit, goddess bless the cleanup crews). As we started to drive off, two teenage kids hailed us, one holding a wading pool parallel to the ground in the wind, the other asking "Have you ever heard this song? Think I got it" as he played "House of the Rising Sun" on his guitar. "Great song, see ya next year!"

I almost wrote a more detailed post on my hellish experience last year, but just thinking of it all brought back such miserable memories, I had to stop.

I will say, that the all-day, from-waking-till-leaving-camp lukewarm margaritas probably hurt more than help. See, I thought that drinking stiff margaritas all day would dull some of the pain of the heat/sun/dust. ick.

A few 55-gallon drums hung on a 2x4 frame should make good annoying windchimes...painted flat black, so bicyclists will ring them for you "by surprise" at night.

...were we still talking about windchimes?

It was a year of contrasts on the playa. Hugeass dustups and some nice, calm times, especially after the brief rain when the rainbows visited. I wouldn't have it any other way, but then again I tend to bring my own spacesuit...

LMAO.... Sounds like i need that set of "wind chimes"... last year i had a problem where a biker shot through the camp at night while i was leaned into my tent trying to find some stuff and he almost ran over my legs and then snapped 2 of the guy lines on the tent across from me... wish i had those "wind chimes" set up then all that would have happened was a loud THUD and me laughing.
