Is the theme official yet?

I've heard that mailings are starting to go out for ordering tickets etc. So I am assuming that the official theme has been decided. Is it "Vaults of Heaven"? Or was something else chosen?

Since the brief blurb/synopsis about it appeared in the JRS a while ago, I'd venture it's safe to say that yes, it is offically the theme.

I got a hard copy of it "Vaults of Heaven" with the sentance that someone got from a good source, with the ticket flyer in the mail yesterday. If it gets any more official than that, it's beyond my ken.

I have no idea what the "ticket flyer business" is. All I know is I've got one. Maybe it's because I'm a volenteer, or maybe it's because my Sweetie has been on the ESD "ops list" for the past couple of years. All I know is that I looked at it yesterday and went "Yup, Vaults of Heaven, well the rumors were right. Hm. But he/they/we did Space a few years ago. (Not that I was there.) If it were me I'd do something with giant paramecium. Yeah bacteria. Hm. Maybe 'The Invisible Revealed' Then we'd get ghosts too. That would be good. . ."
I didn't even know that I had any ideas for the theme until then. Which only goes to prove that not only are some people lucky by getting on this mailing list, but that some of those same people are SPOILED ROTTEN!!!
At least this flyer aint gonna be followed up by a dunning phone call--unlike most of my mail.

From what I've experienced the annual ticket flyer goes out to people who have bought tickets in the past. I've noticed that I usually get mailings several days after those in the Bay Area and other parts west start talking about them. Takes awhile for these things to get across country...

I've noticed that past themes for the intangibles are based on something tangible - ie "The Body" "Floating World" "7 Ages"

What is "The Vaults of Heaven" refering to? Or are we just looking to the Skies above the playa?

HELP, I'm drowning in my own confusion.

Celestial Sphere = Vault of heaven...

Imagine the sky as a great, hollow, sphere surrounding the Earth. The stars are attached to this sphere---some bigger and brighter than others---which rotates around the stationary Earth roughly every 24 hours. Alternatively, you can imagine the stars as holes in the sphere and the light from the heavens beyond the sphere shines through those holes. This imaginary sphere is called the celestial sphere, and has a very large radius so that no part of the Earth is significantly closer to any given star than any other part. Therefore, the sky always looks like a great sphere centered on your position. The celestial sphere (and, therefore, the stars) appears to move westward---stars rise in the east and set in the west.

Even though it is now known that this ancient model of a stationary Earth is incorrect, you can still use this model because it is a convenient way to predict the motions of the stars and planets relative to a location on the Earth. A star's apparent brightness is actually determined by its distance, as well as, its physical size and temperature. It is also now known that the stars apparent motion around us is due to the Earth rotating once every 24 hours on its axis. The stars are stationary and the Earth rotates from west to east. This rotational motion makes the stars appear to move from east to west around us. The celestial sphere model is used by planetaria to simulate the night sky.

Very good job on reading my mind before I even had the thought. That has to be the classic illustration of the idea--at least in the modern mind. I wonder if it dates from the time when it was literal, or if it expresses the first stirrings of doubt of the metaphor. . .

It was an illustration from a book about Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Chaucer completed the Tales in 1400 so the book about the book (and characters) was written sometime afterwards.

Goldschneider uses what he calls "Personology", which is a blend of astrology, numerology, tarot, etc. Very nice book. If it's crap, it's at least elegant crap.

Larry was inspired by the Milky Way galaxy at the retreat and arrived at the theme, The Vault of Heaven [note it's Vault, singular] ; The ancients viewed the heavens as a great dome supported by pillars;
This year, the Man will stand atop a [CENSORED] called the [CENSORED] ;
The base of the [CENSORED] will house [CENSORED] [CENSORED];
Artists can submit proposals for [CENSORED] that will be created as [CENSORED] in each [CENSORED]; Groups can submit proposals for inhabiting each [CENSORED], outlining the [CENSORED], [CENSORED] and [CENSORED]; The group can manage the [CENSORED] as an [CENSORED]; The [CENSORED] will be for storage and preparation;
A 12 foot metal [CENSORED] will stand at the center of the [CENSORED];
Performers can display interactive [CENSORED] atop [CENSORED];
A [CENSORED] controlled by a [CENSORED] will be aimed at the [CENSORED]; Everyone will have to approve [CENSORED] to the [CENSORED].
