It probably depends on whether you are melting or burning.
I would use a solvent if possible.
Tubelite carries a safe adhesive for most plastics.

On some plastics there is a lot of info from osha or the maker.

If you don't have a temp controlled iron, you can use a dimmer switch with a small lightbulb as an indicator.
I use a 200 watt iron for heat stability on big jobs.
A diamond shaped tip can be useful for some things.
