A Unicycle

Post by theBrooke » Mon Feb 09, 2004 9:22 am

I'm making a big kid big wheel for bm04... I need three wheels so I can ride whenever and just stop relax and enjoy the scenery at will. If anyone has an old unicycle that's lying around in the garage, let's make a deal! I actually just need a wheel with a hub that can house a crank, I'm assuming a unicycle wheel is my best bet. If anyone out there is a uni enthusiast, I have a question... Does the frame have a different connection at the bottom to hold the wheel in place, or could you attach a uni wheel to a regular bike fork?

Thanks,
Brooke

-oh yeah, also gonna need a seat, go-cart or lawnmower type (high-back would be optimal) so if you got one let me know *wink*

Have you considered refitting a tricycle frame instead? You might need bigger back wheels and a longer front fork, but the basic shape's right...You can get all kinds of heavyduty pneumatic tires and tractor seats at TSC (farm supply) stores.
Ever seen Gallagher's Big Wheel? Truly stupendous- his was custom made, though.

Refitting?

You mean just take a kids trike and use that somehow? I'm not exactly what I would call a master metalworker. My plan was/is scavenge the steertube from a junker bike, get some steel tubing and get one length bent to the desired angle, weld that to the rear 'axle' and viola a metal version of the big wheel. Front wheel 24" back wheels 12" or less I could show you the one I drew at the bar on a napkin ;) Seems straightforward enough for me to do. Now a plastic one that would be sooooo cool, with the hand brake so I could do those cool slides. Haven't seen Galagers will have to google it. Anyway, elaborate on the refitting... Maybe that would be better than using a unicycle for the front end?

That you even MENTIONED welding makes me confindent that you can pull this refit off.....If you can find a scrap unicycle around, you can probably use it for the front wheel but somewhere there'll be a mighty sad clown....the world is jus' crawling with scrap bikes, though, and if you've got a welder then why not chop the back tubes to length, weld on a crossbar for an axle and slap two 12" wheels on?
A note- you're changing from rear to front wheel drive- scaled up, a Big Wheel is kinda hard for a grownup to propel unless it's set up right......
I'm thinking maybe something like a TRIANGULAR frame, (stronger than a "T") with an axle welded on back for the short wheels and the front part of a bike frame stuck on the front- Try mocking it up with WOOD first, to get the frame proportions just right, and then use that as a pattern. Happy Tinkering, and let me know if I can offer more vague, confusing directions. (my specialty.)

Could really use that napkin right about now...

I will keep you posted on the frame progress, you're basically saying use more of a bike frame. Definitely want to recycle something... Still need to find out if I can attach a uni wheel to a regular fork, I will keep diggin and hopefully somebody will see this who knows more about them. I can buy a wheel-hub-crank combo for about $40 online, much cheaper than a unicycle and no clowns crying... Thanks for the vague possibilities!

It's probably as snowy in Boise as it is here, which makes scrapyard digging difficult, but aren't there thrift stores out there? You shouldn't have to go much farther than the curb to get bike parts!
Good luck- If I were you, I'd be proud to say I was the inventor of the world's first three-wheeled unicycle!

do a look up on Human Powered Vehicles (HPVs)
there is a huge builder community out there, and lots of Free plans on the internet to turn a few pieces of bikes into a laid back 3 wheel vehicle. Im sure a little more fiddling could help you make the Big front wheel crank/pedal setupd
