Black Holes in the Internet

Post by gyre » Wed Apr 16, 2008 12:25 pm

I have noticed a fair number of transmissions getting lost myself.
If you don't get a response to an email, it may very well have vanished.

I'm glad you found it interesting.

The mapping of the internet reminds me of the blue box guys mapping out the phone system.
This is said to be the inspiration for a lot of software and the way the internet has grown.

I cant wait for the day the implementation of IPV6 is finished. It should eliminate several of these problems.
Then again who knows, as long as you have elements of the military and others involved.......

I thought some people might miss it.

The amount of hacking and spamming coming from phantom addresses is pretty spooky.

My parents are deathly afraid of the internet - insist on physically unhooking the cable from the computer.

I told them what about your mailbox? that is less secure and has all sorts of goodies, checks, credit cards/apps, bank statements, etc.

they cant fathom any one stealing from their mailbox.

Maybe you should get them a secure mailbox?
I like wall slots best.
A friend of mine made one resistant to attack.
A week after it was in, they heard a gong like a church bell.
When they ran out, there was a guy in the road with a shattered arm and wood bits all over the road from a bat.
He would stand in the back of the pickup and swing the bat at mailboxes.

It looked just like a standard rural mailbox.
The post was a 6 inch drillhead.
A real work of art.

The mailbox had no damage from the attack.

I have heard some experts recommend pulling the connection when you're not using it, especailly if you're not shutting the machine all the way down.

When I put words in italics, it is actually concealing code to make your computer turn on in the middle of the night so I can use your webcam to watch you sleep.

OK, I made that up.

I once spent an entire day trying to find the electrical fault in a house.
It turned out they had a "light switch" that shut off all the power.
This used to be a common safety feature.
I had a neighbor with this once who thought that electricity leaked out of the receptacles if you didn't turn them off.
Nothing would convince her otherwise.

Electricity does leak out of the receptacles.
Where do you think those little arcs come from after you walk across the carpet ???

If you really believe in "static electricity" then I have some beachfront property in Montana for sale.........

This board has me firmly convinced that static exists.

Has anyone brought a big van de graaf generator to the playa?

I just ran across this story about industrial espionage hacking.
It's a wonder anything digital works.
