Alcoholic Shopping List

Post by aranryan » Wed Apr 23, 2008 1:14 pm

Ok, so I'm making my shopping list for alcohol and since its rather expensive, I'm buying it a bit at a time till we leave. What stuff goes over well on the playa concerning alcoholic drinks? I'm thinking fruity/frosty type drinks like margaritas and stuff would be great but hard to make considering you'd have to have crushed ice on hand. Pabst Blue Ribbon beer makes me cringe but I'd drink it if already intoxicated. What are you all bringing? I'm not going to be running a bar but would like to have enough to drink for myself and to gift at will. Stupid question, but you CAN walk around with open containers right? I'm not an alcoholic but wouldn't mind maintaining a good buzz while walking around. Your shopping lists and suggestions are encouraged!

Heh, I already can hear the comments now... "you can NEVER have enough alcohol at BM.." "anything that gets you fuckered up will work.." "drink water instead, its better for you.." etc. So basically, what/how much are YOU bringing?

I wish I had one of these:

We are bringing tomato juice and vodka. Amount unknown. This way we can give folks a morning bloody mary.

My previous post is what we are bringing for the bar.

My personal stash will consist of:
2 handlers of Maker's Mark
1 handler of some fine rum
3 cases of New Castle in the can.

And to answer your question, you can 'walk' around with as many open containers as you like. You can even ride on an art car and drink booze but you cannot drink and drive (well not legally anyhow). I have ridden my bike drinking beers and never had a problem with the poe-poe but I am not sure what the actual rule is there.

We always have booze to take home, get out there and don't want to drink in the heat.

Beer ... some guiness and ales and Fosters. I think we take cheap beer too, but something larry likes. I don't drink beer often.

Alcho-pop ... Bacardi mojitos or some such for us girls ... and yes, boys can be girls too. Hard Lemonade for the potty cleaners, we're usually camped near enough I can take a few bottles out and set them in their truck for breakfast.

Box wine, something that tastes good warm. Sangria. Wine will go skunky if you take it to the playa, pack it, forget it and try to drink it a year later.

rum ... type varies, usually one dark and one flavored and one Ciclon
tequila ... of some kind
vodka ... just in case
Jack for larry
Pama for me, it tastes good warm.

Interesting booze ... whatever strikes our fancy.

mixers ... anything without sodium benzoate. That shit will make you sick. No Bloody Marys, we're both allergic to tomatoes. Rum and coke. Maybe mai tais this year. who knows?

You can always donate it to your local Moonshine Tavern. We ran out of liquor by Thursday last year and had to get donations to stay open. By Thursday afternoon I was mixing all sorts of strange concoctions that you wouldn't dare drink at home. How did that Peppermint, Peach, Root Beer Schnapps taste anyway????

We were drinking a lot of vodka with gatoraide last year. The extra electrolytes in it were great since I am sure I didn't drink nearly enough water otherwise. The lil individual bottles were nice too cuz you could just close the lid up and ride around on your bike with it and keep it safe from the dusty wind!

Oh ya ~ and canned beer was pretty nice too since it was a lot less weight to carry crushed aluminum to the recycling rather than glass bottles. Only sux that most good beer isn't in cans tho!

BitterDan, DAMN thats a lot of alcohol! What do you pack that in on? A flatbed traincar?

I'm thinking my list may be as such:

3 bottles of red wine (good at room temp)
3 bottles of vodka (with some Red Bull or OJ)
3 bottles of coconut rum (with some pineapple juice)
?several? Cases of canned domestic beer of some sort.

I figure this is enough to get me/ my g/f enough with plenty to gift away. Trick is to get it out there with no breakage.

Three train cars actually. Seriously though, we have approx 16 vehicles going to the playa including some with RV Trailers and, hopefully, a box truck and reefer truck. It's a ton of stuff but that's what it takes to run a plaza bar.

And keep in mind that there are bars everywhere so you don't have to worry about bringing enough booze to keep yourself drunk all week. Just bring enough for those times when you don't want to walk to a bar.

Oh and the biggest bar-hopper tip of the day:
Bring your own cup! I don't think we are bringing ANY plastic cups this year. If you don't have a cup, I'll pour it in your hands for a dime bag.

LOL!

I have that covered! Got my Nalgene bottles ready to go! I have a pack that I'm going to wear that has all my playa travelling essentials: Goggles, Hats, Sunscreen, Dustmasks, (multiple) Nalgene bottles, lip balm, personal alcohol collection, small blanket and pillow (for those "Oops I'm too drunk to find my way home" situations), and hydration pack with water/pedialyte. I figure I'll be able to wander far from camp, be away for a day or more and still be able to subsist without being a mootch. :D And when I come see ya at the bar, I'll be happy to share a dime with ya. ;-)

Oops I'm too drunk to find my way home
Assuming that no one burns the man early this year at least you will have that reference point. As long as you can see the man (or three of them), you can find your way home--or at least the general direction of home. Too many times last year did I end up walking AWAY from the city for a while before realizing I was in deep playa....

Keep us informed on the possible location of the Moonshine Tavern, BD, we could bring by a few bottles of this or that.

We've always donated a box o' booze to The Golden Cafe, but change is good. Of course, the GC is generally but a block or two from Hushville. They use real glassware only, no plastic cups, no bringing your own. They are always looking for volunteer dishwashers. Very strange gig, washing glasses on the playa.

Will do AntiM! We are hoping to be on the same plaza (9 o'clock) but on the opposite side of Artica this time. I'll definitely be posting our location once we know for sure (and we'll be on the map too).

WTF? Raggie, tell me you're gonna bring worcestershire, hot sauce, olives, pickled asparagus, cocktail onions, cherry peppers, etc.
You're not gonna just pour vodka in some tomato juice and call it an adequate bloody mary are you? Don't make me come down the road five miles and learn you about makin' a real playa bloody mary.

Vodka is great on the playa... I used to fill my water bottle with good quality vodka... everyone thought I was drinking water...

Anyway, aranryan, I used to bring all sorts of booze for bartending on my land yacht, but the frosty cold margaritas proved by far most popular.
If you're not bringing your own ice-making capabilities, you can get Ice Camp ice... you can get gas-powered blenders for ultimate cool-factor, or just run a standard thrift-shop home blender on an inverter. (That's what I do on the landboat.)

Chill cappie..we are going to bring the condiments. I didn't think of hot sauce or asparagus though..or even worcestershire. You may have to travel your ass down here and teach me the real way to make a bloody mary. Shite what have I gotten myself into.

Oh yuck
I hate tomato juice. Yech. Maybe I'll just cry allergy. ;>)

Just how many people are drunk all week and driving home with the mother of all hangovers anyway. If I could drive maybe I could get my ticket comped by campmates who are unable to drive.

I found a perfect Playa glass three years ago.

Its a 12 oz or so tall boy made of pyrex I think with a biner(sp) for attaching. One of the better SWAGs from a nearby camp circa 2005

I attach it to my bike and always have it when gifted boozeahol.

Last years internal Bar included
6 cases of Rum from Cuba,
2 cases of Finlandia Vodka,
1 case of OJ concentrate
1 case of cranberry concentrate
1 case of scotch
1 case of gin
and a bunch of assorted things
none of it returned

This year we are opening our bar up to the public and scaling way up.

Havent you read the paper lately? LOL The latest is that we are all slowly being poisoned to death by something in the nalgene called bpa if I recall.
And here all along I thought what was giving me a buzz from my nalgene bottles when I was out backpacking was the schnapps! Next thing they'll be saying is that beer is addictive. Now if you'll excuse me I gotta run to the fridge for another Labatts :D
I get to drive the ambulance how fast?!!

I try to always bring an extra big bottle of vodka & some mixer to donate to Fandango on Thursday or Friday (they've kept me drunk for years now).
You kids made our camp real happy last year, I'll try to remember to add some end-of-the-week gifties for you as well.

Yeah, I gotta come find the Moonshine Tavern this year. When I do, I'll have margarita supplies aboard... tequila, mixer, ice, blender... maybe I'll have to do a guest bartender stint.

booze

Post by DragginLady » Mon Apr 28, 2008 10:12 am

Last year we brought tons of booze and ended up gifting some to the Paddy Mirage which was right next to our camp.
What I found was very well-received for people wandering into our Costco carport to get out of the dust was ready made margaritas..
The kind you pour out of the bottle and just add ice to...
also good vodka and JD went well... and tequila shots;
having some munchies around was good too.
and yes, this year we are bringing NO plastic or paper cups...
However, we are gifting shot glasses on a string this year.
Only hold two ounces, but I think it will be a cool gift...
You think?
