Is Burning Man still sarky?

Post by gyre » Sat May 06, 2006 9:43 am

Is the loss of sarcasm ruining Burning Man?
Recent dmv rules against drive-by sarcasm may indicate a new position in the organization.
We must take action.
Larry Harvey's recent vitriolic diatribe against sarcasm should be a cautionary tale to everyone.
Quoting from his speech at MASC (Mothers Against Sarcastic Children)-
"Sheesh! Enough with the sarcasm already! Like I don't have enough to do..."

Snarkiness is dead.

Piss Clear is only doing articles on the beneficence of the BMorg this year, and on how cowboy hats & utilikilts are always a fresh fashion statment.

I have to go work on my totally unusual fake-fur vest now.

It means sarcastic.

Burning Man is not sarcastic anymore. The very last piece of sarcasm was finally put on display in 2006 not far from the Belgian stick pile in the form of an array of large wooden letters spelling the name LARRY HARVEY with a tiny sign off to one side bearing the question "Does anyone remember John Law?".

Burning Man is a result/reflection of those attending. If those in attendance are "snarky"( wtf that means? ), then the event will be. If the attendees are fun people, then the event will be fun.

It is what each person expects. If a person expects a dirty dry mess, it will be that for them. If a person expects a f'n good time, then it will be for them..

It is what you make of it. So make it FUN for yourself, and it will be that !

I think snarky has more of a negative connotation.
I never even heard the term until I posted this, except as relates to car styling.
I think it originated in the uk, as in- Someone is being a tad sarky!
It's not necessarily a negative thing.

My project for next year:

Making fun of all things burning man!

In a discussion of britspeak, this came up about sarky.

Quoting-
sarky does mean sarcastic
snarkey is snark, but it just means grouchy or bitchy comments, its from
lewis carrols hunting of the snark i believe, whom was a grumpy beast.

Not me. Those lizards drove me crazy last time. And the midgets wouldn't stop jumping up and down. But it was nice to be covered in mule spittle once again, I will always cherish those memories.
