Where is North?

Post by SirSlackworthy » Thu May 01, 2008 3:23 pm

Where is north on the map? Is the Man north of center camp? Where was it last year, and where will it be this year? Is it the same each year?

It would be extremely useful to know where north is on the city map.

Where is it?

If I remember correctly, the 5:00 street runs north-south? Also, I believe the N-S orientation is always the same. The exact location of the city moves, but not the orientation.

The city is oriented to the prevailing wind. Think that's out of the NW. No?

Why do you care which way is north out there?

Hard to tell which way is up some days....

Camp structure orientation in relation to the sun. Castle Loafington will be 18' wide x 15' tall. It will provide a good bit of shade if oriented correctly.

Our camp application will plead for placement on the side of the street that will best allow the castle facade to provide some additional shade for the camp. Location on the north side of a street will be best, and knowing the orientation of the streets will help to make the request more specific.

Ask for what you want.

Elegant solution. Thank you, kind sir.

Looks like 4:00 runs N-S with the outer ring south and the inner ring & Man at the north.

Louise and I do the same thing. My hazy recollection is that the sun sets in the neighborhood of 285 degrees. Good orientation gives us max shade morning and evening when the sun is shining under the tarp.

one year ('06?), someone was kind enough to use black tarp to lay out a huge north arrow on the playa, maybe check for that

Just keep in mind that the sun does not necessarily set exactly to the west. You can probably just figure it out when you get there. :)

That was me. Don't trust what you see laying on the ground at Burning Man, the arrow faced SSE
It's going to be alright.

Shirley, you aren't saying that you expect the theme camp department to site your theme camp castle based on your sun orientation preferences. That would be the apogee of fuckwitry, IMO.

Don't call me Shirley.

We have a small plot of land within which we can angle our shade.

I knew that, and that remains in my mind as one of the most inspired bits of lunacy to grace the Playa. didnt you try to do a peace sign last year? How'd that go, if that was you?

If what you care about is sun orientation, then note that the sun rises just to the left of Black Rock Mountain. In this picture the sun then travels left-to-right across the sky. Assuming that the BM site does not move too much, of course.

Thanks. No, the peace sign was not me.

I don't expect much of anything. I am asking and hoping. The castle will be street frontage, so we don't get a choice on how it is oriented; camp placement decides that. The application asks for placement preferences, and we provide clarification to the answers.

But you may know something I don't. What is it about clarifying our placement answers regarding orientation (which side of the street we prefer) that makes it "the apogee of fuckwitry"? For bonus points could you please define "fuckwitry"? so that I might be able to use such a fancy word also to impress my associates?

BTW the name's Sir Slackworthy the Red. My friends call me Red, you can call me Sir.
