From Reno

I have never been to burning man before, but am very interested. I live way up in northern michigan, and am a poor college student. with gas prices these days i think it would be a lot cheaper to fly to reno. would it be hard to get from reno to burning man? how far is it? would it be feasable with just a back packs worth of stuff?

You can arrange for a ride share from reno to burning man. Those posts will be up closer to the event.

Not feasable to attend with just a backpacks worth of stuff. I mean you need about 2 gallons of water a day. Be sure to read the survival guide if you are putting some serious thoughts into going. Also do a search on gear and supplies here to see what all you would need to go.

You can get by with little, but you do need water. True, you can buy ice and let it melt, but that means you need something to put it in, and ice has been known to be hard to get.

You must PLAN to be self-sufficient for the length of time you will be there.

Hey Gyyrog I am almost in the same situation as you.
I will fly to Reno from Poland so I can't rent a car (it's too expencive and I don't have any bank account in USA wich is needed)

Here are some things i have figured out -
How to get to BRC.
I've herd that from Reno its about 3h by car. I think the best way to get there is to find and contact with someone in this forum who can take from there, and someone who can take back.

Water - I think I'll take a 'folding canister'( 8or15 l) from home and fill it somehow in Reno (I don't know if there is some free water there. if not i'll have to buy)

Bicycle? -
I am really thinking about taking some scrap from home and build a simlpe scooter at the place :D (not a motor) But I've heard that you can rent one in some little vilige (with a sigh - "welcome to nowhere") some 7 miles from Black Rock City.

I am very interested in your solutions of such problems.

You can get containers here or buy water in jugs.
Finding a used bike can be iffy.
Basic repair tools and tubes are a good idea.

There is probably a way to solve the car rental thing if you want to rent one, but I don't know it.
The euro burners may know all this stuff.

You don't need an American bank account to rent. Just a credit card.
If you are flying from Poland and able to afford a ticket how is a rental too expensive?

Be sure to get comfortable dust goggles.
And get a bike lock.

Some people order stuff in to the Gerlach or Reno post office.
I don't know how that works out.
Campmor.com has a big selection ranging from crap to good stuff.
Lots of stores in reno too.

I used coolers for luggage, which worked out, except for funny looks and the airlines destroying them.
I'll box them next time.

You may be able to get a group to rent a cargo van if you choose.

Since you're making more sense than some of the americans on here, I wouldn't worry about your english.

Goggles are a definite must, and maybe dust masks as well (like painter's masks or the kind that doctors use or something). And a bandanna or two.
A few stores to check out in Reno (at a reasonable distance from one another):
Twin City Surplus
Rad Betty's
and CostCo.
Also other sporting goods stores. That covers your bulk items like water, your fancy items like goggles and costumes, and camping equipment.
I hate shopping for all the crap,
but its damn worth it.
Although I've never needed a bike lock cuz I only use my bike during the day when I'm almost sure I won't get drunk and leave it somewhere.

Hah :) Informations about stuff like goggles, dust masks, bandanna and so one are in every survival guide, first timers guide, F.A.Qs and even on Q.& A. forum so everybody know about that ;)

I know that I will not rent a car, so the thing is - I can only take things I will be able to handle with on my own.
I need to leave my stuff somewhere to get to the shop!
And get my self together after the event.
Maybe I should stay somewhere in Reno for few days?

GEez I have plenty of questions! I need to talk to some one who knows Reno or better - who traveled on his own starting from the airport.

At the Euroburner site there is no way to contact with Euroburners. (there is only an e-mail to the authors of site i think.. or maybe I just can't find it)
I'll try to find some people from Reno (not just those who go on BM) to find out prices, hotels/tented fields, or atractions in this town cause who knows? maybe I should stay few days after the Burning Man.
and I need some prices of other stuff to find out if I have to take them with me or buy it there.
Of course I need to find a place where I can put my stuff when I'll arrive just to go for shopping.

so yes.. it will be nice to talk with somebody from Reno.
any ideas how to find one?

100 miles walk in the desert, and easy day's jaunt. We normally walk back to Reno to get ice when it runs out.

Most things you can get in reno, though they don't prepare as well as you would think "because the camping season is over".
You might find more reno folks on tribe and there is the regionals area on here.

I used a really expensive luggage storage service at the airport after my kittycat related flight delay.
If you can get a ride with people, you might be able to keep things in the truck.
Some times there are bargain motel rooms, especially reserved ahead of time, but the labor day thing can be a problem there.
$25 is possible off holiday.
Off season rates can be negotiated some times if a hotel is independent and not full.
Casinos may have the best deals on rooms.
May be hostels.
Most airport lockers are gone due to Achmed Macguyver and his tennis shoes.
Maybe someone in reno can let you park your stuff with them?
Many of them go out early to the site.

There is often stuff posted on here at some point about parties or hotel deals after the event.
The Peppermill used to be popular.
You may be able to get some better deals through europe.
Worth checking.
There are some fares only available from out of the country.
I don't know if that applies here.

There is a car museum in reno that has the remnants of the harrah collection.
It used to be great then.
Other than that, all I know about reno is that it is located near burning man and has a lot of casinos.
There is kmart, walmart, costco (though I don't know what good that is unless you BUY a membership), crystal ice for dry ice and ice ice, and grocery stores.
You can camp at pyramid lake near the site too if you have time.

I got drunk last year at Happy Camp last year about 4pm in the day during
a dust storm and passed out in a chair. Luckly when I woke up at 10pm in the dark I found my bike just outside where I locked it.

The only real loss was I missed the Eplaya Meet-and Greet which happened
a block away at this time.

2008 Will be my first burn. I am 61 years old (just an aging Hippie). The 60's were good to me, but I missed Woodstock, so I want to see the burn. Will be all alone, as the wife's idea of roughing it is to turn down the electric blanket one notch, but was wondering about the possible problems associated with bringing my motorhome (38'). Is there access and parking for such a large vehicle. Sorry, but at my age I have gotten soft and don't sleep on the ground anymore :)
I was also wondering about being able to use my Segway scooter, as I need it to get around comfortably. I look forward to responses on these two questions, and can't wait for the experience.

Be sure to light it up really good for night use.
And yourself.

Park your rv next to the full size ones.

You could go to the art museum. That' pretty cool.
If youre in town stop by the Zephyr lounge. A lot of local burners kick it there.
