Black Rock Roller Disco will be there in 2008, but first...
Yes folks,
The Black Rock Roller Disco will be on the playa in 2008. We are adding a little more skating floor and a few more skates every year. The band, Soul Glow" will be playing live on Friday night and we're planning 2 all girl roller derby games.
Before we roll out to the desert, we are trying to use our skating to help stop the violence. The Skate Against Violence Roadskate is a 450 mile skate-a-thon from San Francisco to Santa Monica. The event is a rolling anti-violence campaign that starts at San Francisco City Hall and rolls through San Francisco, Oakland, Fresno, Visalia, Porterville, Bakersfield, Santa Monica and ends at the Santa Monica Pier. We will leave on Monday, April 14, 2008.
The Skate Against Violence Campaign is a three pronged effort to strongly raise awareness of the positive aspects inline skating and roller skating can bring to the lives of youth and adults alike and give people a fun, healthy alternative they can enjoy. This may not end violence in the street, but it can have an enormous impact in the minds of young people who will benefit from the social interaction and the physical conditioning skating will bring into their lives.
The 3 prongs are the SAV Roadskate http://www.cora.org/SFtoLA2008.htm , SkateFit California http://www.cora.org/CoraSkateFitProgram.htm and Healthy Saturdays. http://www.cora.org/HealthySaturdays.htm
The C.O.R.A. Skatefit Program is designed to introduce people to outdoor fitness and recreational skating and to provide a fitness challenge to other skaters looking to practice, train, lose weight or just have fun. The program is based on the President's Challenge developed by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports. The challenge of the program is to make a commitment to physical fitness through active and regular participation in outdoor skating activities.
Healthy Saturdays was a successful effort in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park to close part of Kennedy Drive to car traffic for recreational use. When the cars are removed, the asphalt transforms into a recreational paradise for the 21st century park user. This create a fertile situation to grow interest in inline skating, roller skating and a host of other fun, healthy outdoor recreational activities.

Thanx for the love for the Roller Disco. It is that energy and the Burning Man experience that has me moving forward on the SAV concept. I had been doing the SF to LA skate in the fall until BM. The last time was 2003. Now I just can't muster the energy necessary in the fall especially with Decompression.
We won't be skating the Grapevine, although I would love to go offroad on what is left on the old highway. We will be leave the Bakersfield area skating Hwy 119 to Hwy 33. We will take 33 over the Santa Barbara Mountains to the Pacific Coast in Ventura. We will skate PCH to the Santa Monica Pier.
We now have 12 skaters from 6 different countries participating. 2 weeks to go!!!!!

BRC Roller Disco was a big landmark for me last year. I had the pleasure of using your dance floor sans skates. This year I will make sure that my wife and I borrow some skates and make the scene.
Your work in your community is wonderful in terms of the mental and natural environments. I will gladly to make a donation to your skate.

That's an insane trek you're on! Your roller disco is an incredible contribution to BM. Especially this year, goes perfect with the theme. I can bring a few pairs of old roller blades to donate, I have played roller hockey my whole life. Also, I DJ House music and would love to lay down a disco-house set for all ya skaters. Don't have any disco house demos, but I have an arsenal of all kinds of house, with PLENTY of Disco. Let me know what ya think! Much love for what you're doing.
