***Looking for an Art Car for Burningman 2008***

Looking to Rent (or Buy) an Art Car or Burningman transportation (inside Burningman) Vehicle

I will be there from Thursday to Sunday
Would be willing to pay someone Very Well for their Art Car and transporting Vehicle to Burningman.

Ideal scanario is to rent an Art Car for 1-3 days

Open to all suggestions and type of cars/transportation - Small or Larger

Willing to pay what is the Fair price. I can also pick it up in Reno

i have been searching high and low for an art car to rent at BM. i'm coming from NY and it's just not realistic to take one from here.

i'm actually searching for someone else. it's been almost impossible to find anything close to art car rentals.

its a hoax just like the possibility of finding a rental art car.
A lot goes into Mutant vehicles so the possibility of finding someone to rent one is very small if that.

I am really trying to help here and be as gentle as possible.

My suggestion would be to read more on this board and get to know more about BM.

Most art cars are labors of love with a lot of time and money invested and most bm type mutant vehicles are, oddly enough, in use for that week. After that time and money they want to use them themselves for bm transport.

You can make your own, or you can go to the most efficient transportation known invented by man--the bicycle. These can be "mutanted up" or not and don't have to go through the DMV review--a burocratic process that no seller or rental agency can guarentee the MV you rent or buy will pass.

Stick around the forum, read up on it, and make any appropriate adjustments to your original plan.

actually, i was lucky enough to find 2 people willing to rent theirs.

i completely understand and acknowledge the time and sweat it takes to build an MV/Art car but i guess i was banking on finding someone who wasn't attending but had one from previous years.

i've been reading up on a few boards re: BM and so far-

my assessment: looks like only a once in a lifetime experience. especially since it's grown so much in the past 20+ years. with more people, comes more problems.

the need for the art car? while i can't speak entirely for the person that's looking for it, i can only suggest that he might be looking to use as transport or show. he is traveling 3000 miles for this, it's not feasible to bring his own art car.

thanks for the help and advice. and please do PM me or respond if anyone comes across any info about art car rentals.

Well then, I "want" your friend to ride a bicycle like the rest of us do. We "need" there to be less traffic on the playa. Allowing someone's pride and joy of an art car is one thing when you know that person (or group of persons) has built something creative to show other people. Renting art is not artistic in any way. It's like buying a print of a Van Gogh and calling yourself an artist...

whoever said that they wouldn't be riding bicycles?

and wait a minute, it's ok if i created an art car and drove it around the playa but because i rented one from someone else and drove it around, it makes me less of an artist?
and then throw in the "need" there to be less traffic, as if there would be any less traffic with either scenario...

museums rent art, everyday people rent art. how does one single act decide whether someone is artistic or not?

Actually, a lot of art cars are sold and resold as the builders build something else, get bored, etc.
And you're quite right about the commute.
I would field something if not for the 4500 mile transport.
As it is, I'll be struggling once again to get something tiny to the playa.

It's really easy to think it's easy in a place like cali where you can find every skill you might lack and plenty of people to work on a project with you.
It's not that easy everywhere.

You could always travel 3000 miles and help him build something, right?
Or too difficult?

Personally, I don't think there are enough art cars relative to the people.
And I think it can be very hard to see everything by bike.

Can't the city be more concentrated, rather than circular?
That would help.

And be sure you can pass the dmv process.

Why would anyone NOT want to bring an art car?

People spend time, money, blood, sweat, and tears on all sorts of projects art cars included. The effort it takes to build something, transport it to the playa, have it work, and get it back home is enormous. The experience of doing just that is why people go back year after year after year after year.

Showing up and having the experience pre-packaged for you goes against everything alot of long time attendees believe in. You gotta earn it.

Talk to LeChatNoir, he comes 3000 miles with his. It's called a truck and trailer... I'm sure you've seen one. If you've got so much money that you can pay someone else for a mutant vehicle, you can buy some god damn gas.
The whole concept of paying someone else be creative for you goes against the whole principal of the event.
I'd say go to a concert instead.

This seems kind of reminiscent of the person who told me I shouldn't go to burning man because I wasn't wealthy enough to participate properly.
The most hardcore burners here where I am, finally burned out from cost after going for years and don't go at all now.
More people go to burning man from other countries than from the states east of the mississippi.
I can't help noticing that you are close to the playa.
Try it from far away.

Are you from the custom crowd that thinks if any work was done by someone else, it doesn't count?
I can only think of two mutant vehicles built that way and Le Chat's is one of them (and not licensed, as it's pedal powered as of 2007).

Does it matter if the body work on my car was done in california, if it was my taste, or even my concept?
I often find that my ideas are better than the people who have superior or different mechanical skills than mine.
I'll do whatever it takes to get the best results I can.

Whatever you have done, what counts is what you do on the playa.

Most custom cars are never shown.
Some owners don't like to talk about them.
I am baffled by this myself.
I love to talk to people about my car.
I actually had someone recognize me without my car two years after I had shown them the car and talked to them about it.
I was shocked, but it meant something to them.
I learned because people answered my stupid questions.
I continue to ask those questions, only now it's Boyd or Jack or the guy at the wind tunnel...
I'm still asking stupid questions, but at a higher level now.

Does it matter that there are much better creations out there, or that I didn't hand polish every single fastener myself, if I enjoy myself and get to share it with others?
If a much better hand made car is out there (and there is) sitting in a garage and no one ever sees it, is it still cool?
