I call those guys with cool customs or hot rods that they bought or commissioned "Checkbook Hotrodders".
But this is Burning Man, not a car show.

Thisisthatwhichis, if you rent your son's "art car" out, does he get the $$? Would he mind if it came back with a dance floor welded to it?

Don't be offended Zit. First off, people on here act like a small percentage of people on the playa. Second, one of the building block of the event is self reliance. As we grow as a city, we run into more problems, traffic being one of them. So when random people on the internet see someone who's not practicing self reliance and adding to the problems for the city, they are likely to be rude to the other anonymous stranger typing on the internet.

We do tend to label people as a participant or a spectator. Most 1st timers come as spectators and turn into participants, but old timers seem to forget this and hassle the newbies who are still spectators, even though it's not their fault; they don't understand yet. The guy you're looking for the car for is still just spectating. He's not the artist and something you rent isn't likely to be grand. Hopefully his second year he'll want to contribute.

So where do you draw the line?
Where it once was, referring to everyone who bought any single item for a car instead of creating it?
As I pointed out, this let's out virtually every single art car on the playa.

How would you compare a completely handbuilt piece of shit to a well thought out collaborative effort?
How about the art cars that have been mutated differently by each owner, but still building on someone else's work in one way or another?
How about the one built for film that someone found, bought, dragged all the way to the playa and changed enough to pass dmv rules?
They never claim they designed the body.
They did have the imagination to see what it might be in the desert.

I did think of a third example of unique design, but it also uses a prefab drivetrain.
It's design is so peculiar though, it would be deadly on a public street.
Sheer genius on the playa.

Which ones are good enough?

Yes, I have original art on the wall of my house I didn't paint, I go to restaurants and eats fine meals I didn't cook, and on and fucking on. My opinion is on playa it comes down to 'you get out of it what you put into it'.

I've seen the event change a bit in the 9 years I've been attending and it's this kind if assumptive attitude that the foundation built by so many individuals creativity and pain and joy over so many years is there for the fucking taking because someone lives too far, or doesn't have the fucking time, or can or can't afford it, and that pisses me off.

I HAVE A 1995 MO' VAN THAT GOT TRANSFORMED INTO THIS CATBUS. I BROUGHT IT TO A SHOPS AND I WAS LIKE HEY, CAN YOU TURN THIS INTO A CATBUS? SO THEY DID. THEN THAT DAY I DROVE IT HOME. ...I love the Catbus. I've often sat on the tail backwards and dragged my boots all the way across the playa. I made out with some folks on the Catbus as well. It's a great Catbus.

I rescued the catbus from an out-of-gas late one night near center camp.
It's a very simple creation, yet one of the all-time greats!

actually, the beating feels good. haven't even read my tribe post responses yet. i'm sure i'll get to responding. just as i finish up making a spa appt for my high-powered dying vet.

it just proves even more how f*cked up BM has become. It shows me how most of you attend BM and preach and practice the "principles of BM" and then behind your screens of anonymonity, decide to take a moment of your oh-so-busy lives to make some trite remark thinking it was going to change my mind. For those that did post something helpful and positive, Thank you.

For those that posted what they thought to be sarcastic and humorous, I enjoyed it. Makes me want to rent a camper for $12k and park it on the playa, maybe even bring along some frat boys to tear it up. Wouldn't that be interesting?

With an endless supply of bottled water, of course. Long live the playa!

It proves how easy it is to go to BM with no hard work!

You rent a rv
You rent an artcar
You arrange to have art car delivered and picked up from BRC
You buy your costumage online, pre-sewn, brand new
You pay someone to buy your water/gas/groceries and put them in the rv
You show up refreshed because the 1st class plane ride was really good
Your cab knows the back way to get to the rv, so you score on the fare
You get in the gate, park, only leave your airconditioned RV in the evening
You hand out mardigras beads as your shwag
You leave sundrenched with your mind blown
You drop off the rv, pay the extra cleaning deposit
get a cab to the peppermill, check in to the suite
get up in the morning and catch a plane home.

Difference is...
we skrimp and save ALL YEAR
we build any chance we can weather permitting
we plan and party with other burners and have work days where we help each other; sweat, dirt, tears and bloody knuckles
we collaberate with each other long distance on who is building what part of the camp infrastructure
we pick up where one of us might have run short on funds

We work HARD all year, and it does seem a lil' silver spoonish to be asking to rent someones art.

It was a question on an open forum that supposedly supports and thinks highly of BM and all things BM, which i believe includes the 10 principles of BM.

Yeah, well, anyone coming from reno or, let's face it, the entire west coast, has it so easy that nothing they do counts anyway.

There really is a valet camp at burning man.
And there are rvs that cost well over a million dollars too.
Some of those people won't get it.
But some will throw themselves into it.

No matter what you bring out there, you still have to do something with it.
Nothing is art until someone reacts to it.

I was camped next to a very boring looking camp, first year out.
No decoration at all.
But that camp provided such a rich experience for everyone that went there, that it is still remembered over bigger jazzier camps.
It's about the experience, not just the flash gear.
Some of the best camps are all go, no show.

One of my favorite art cars would never even pass dmv these days.
It was the kittymobile wagon, vaguely cat shaped with ears.
But when you got inside, the kitties were so commited to the performance that it was hysterical fun!
They kitted me with a tail, we batted at mice!
We fished for other kitties with mice on fishing poles!
And they only spoke with a russian accent or meowed, never broke character.

It wouldn't have been much of an art car, except for what they did with it.
But it was.

i've been reading up on a few boards re: BM and so far-

my assessment: looks like only a once in a lifetime experience. especially since it's grown so much in the past 20+ years. with more people, comes more problems.

the need for the art car? while i can't speak entirely for the person that's looking for it, i can only suggest that he might be looking to use as transport or show. he is traveling 3000 miles for this, it's not feasible to bring his own art car.

This is when you might have just let go of this thread and stopped taking stuff personally. I would greet you with open arms on the playa and definately love to take a ride in one of those two 'art cars' you have found to rent. (assuming they even get cleared for the event)

peace to you, I hope you have a wonderful time.

I do sometimes find it mind boggling when someone who has never been to a city comes in and fails to really take notice of how things work and try and learn from the citizens. Yes, it will be your city too and yes, just like your father or grandparents sometimes the 'eplayans' may seem like crusty old worn out bitter folk but it's pretty true that what these people have in common is a knowledge for how things work in a righteous (sometimes over the top) way. much like trying to fight the former you'll run into flames if you jab back. If you can just realize that most here are really cool and the snark is just friendly ribbing that is usually intermixed with simple helpful answers then you can translate what is said to your own language.

It's up to you whether you want to be like an old school 'burner' or if you just want to come in like a tourist or something in between.

I hope you can use eplaya as a tool for picking up tips and tricks and not an outlet/inlet for frustration.

have fun. most everyone here is cool and if they get on your back,...listen. they're onto something.
