A principal of a middle school made up a list of couples,
including gay students and posted the list in the office.
She also outed students to their parents.

I think the principal is a tactless asswench, however, I don't see exposing the truth as such a 'horrible' thing.

This is the truth we're talking about. In school, most of the kids new who was gay and who wasn't. The parents had less of an idea cause the kids we're "hiding" it at school. In essence, school staff are babysitters, these are minors, and babysitters should report to parents.

The kid who said his life is ruined will probably look back at this in 5 or 10 years and be thankful that he no longer had to live a lie.

yes, she's an asshat, that principal.

Could you imagine as a teenage coming out to your parents? Especially if they are close minded to the idea. Which is most likely why you haven't come out. Also what if you were just experimenting still and hadn't fully decided for yourself what your sexuality was. I know it took me years to decide what my sexuality was I came to the conclusion I was just greedy

The principal had no right to do what she did. It isnt her place to out kids to their parents and to the whole school. Honestly why did she need to make a list of couples anyway its middle/high school it freaking changes every week. Grrrr

Except maybe for getting called 'queer' or 'faggot' every other day for the rest of your time in school. Maybe, if your lucky, you'll only get your ass kicked once a month by the bullies rather than ending up getting the life beat and kicked out of you like Matthew Shepard.

i hear you Badger,...I understand.
The fast road to living with who you are and not hiding seems a better option to me. To live in hiding beats up the mental psyche IMHO and at the age of 13 or so you still have plento o'time to learn some self defense and curb the dingbat "attacks".

once again, the principal is an ass and I hope the kids are successful in their growth as good and honest humans. gay, straight, bi or whatever.

The only time I feel it's right to publicly out someone is if they're an adult who has propped up their career through gay bashing. This seems to happen frequently with politicians and religious figures.

Being different is a traumatic thing when you're young. Sure, in some cases outing might benefit them in the long run but in others it could push them over the edge. The psychological scars could haunt them for a long time, they could be kicked out of their home, or they could even attempt suicide. Until our society reaches a point where being gay is no more stigmatizing then having red hair we need to respect peoples' right to privacy.

I would also add that the list was just the principal's guess at who is in a relationship with who. It was not necessarily accurate.

I don't think I would want official attention taken of my social activity by the administration, regardless of what I was doing.
This kind of unusual interest in school children must indicate some kind of dysfunction.

I think this is pretty fucked up and is really none of the school's business whom what student is dating, gay or straight. Someone hit the nail right on the head earlier in this thread. Most kids who are gay and in the closet are probably that way to avoid persecution by their peers and/or their parents. There are many backwards-ass thinkers in this world that would kick their kids out of the house or kick some ass if they found out their kid was gay. Frankly, it's not even the parent's business what sexual orientation their kids are.

And furthermore, as the previous posts suggests, how does this principal actually KNOW that the kid's are gay? Does he/she only post the names if he/she sees the kid kissing someone of the same sex, having sex or just "looks" gay? If I were one of the kids on the "gay list" i would be filing civil suit in 2 seconds flat for defamation of character since there is, in all actuality, no way for the principal to PROVE that you are gay yet outed you as gay anyway. Pure pwnage.

Half these kids arnt even sexual yet....Yes...I see a new trend of..."I think Im Bi-sexual"

But thats what puberty is all about...discovering what makes you tick.

The parents regardless of what they think of the uncreditted accounts of some lame ass admin'...should definately take this case to a civil level.

I know a lot of schools are required to tell parents about their students dating habits - if the parents ASK, but I have never heard of a school doing a witch hunt before?

The board says they are still investigating (months now).

The aclu brief says that the principal admitted there had been no display of affection by the males, the original justification being pda.

But her outgoing message explained everything we needed to know; it said she "was unable to come to the phone, and to have a blessed day"!!

I think you know where her motivation comes from.
