As far as showers go, I do not want to be a downer, but... to our newbies... you HAVE to prepare your ladies to give up on the idea of being clean. Otherwise, they will fight an uphill battle that ends only in frustration. After the burn ended, I washed my hair in the hotel THREE TIMES before it was even remotely passable. The problem is, they will not be able to use their normal hair care products. These are not safe for the playa. There is no good biodegradable, nontoxic, chemical free shampoo and conditioner. Everyone uses Dr. Bronners.
Even with the fanciest RV rig available, your girl will be dirty. Key is for you both to learn to love it.
This just isn't true.

You can shower every day, use all your normal products, and feel great.
The First Mate and I do it, and she's got very long hair.
It's all about the water supply! If you're gonna come in a Honda Civic, THEN you're screwed! But if you're driving a truck (and maybe trailer too) full of Burning Man stuff, a few barrels of water isn't a big deal.
I find about 100 - 120 gallons takes care of two people quite nicely.

I usually don't haul it all the way from home, I fill up in Alturas or Cedarville and carry it only the last part of the trip.

I use the same barrels I bring it in to haul out the grey water, and drain it at an RV dump on the way home.

All the people who say you have to be dirty, can't shower as well as at home, etc. simply haven't thought of bringing MORE than the minimum required amount of water!

The advice that both Captain and Melancholy give is true. You can shower every day or more than that you just have to provide everything you need and Capatin Goddammit's post describes what you have to do with water handling to make it happen. In essence pack it in and pack it out. Providing for your own comfort is what Radical Self Reliance is about. It is a reality that you will be dusty and if it is a windy year (what year isn't) you will be dusty most of the time. If you really value getting clean you will have to provide for that and within the bounds of leave no trace. No shower, baby wiping, sponge bath, spray bottle, water truck, Caracas Wash, self built sun shower and evaporator system or full blown heated water with all the trimmings. It is up to you. Many at Burning Man "shower" minimally.
Go ahead and run behind the water truck if you want to.

That water is not safe to drink or even shower in.

It comes from a nasty ass lake/pond nearby.

There are shredded frogs and minnows (because of the pumps) in that water.

There are microbes that can give you ear infections and other parts too

Drinking it (which I still see happen every year) can/will put in the hospital.

If you catch some in a clear jug, it is brownish/grey....just like a mud puddle.

Enjoy !!!! :D

The water from the water truck last year was a bit nasty, :( but that was because it was a drought year. This year there is alot more water. It is treated though, but still not drinkable.
I see people showering under the water truck every year but don't recomend it.
As far as getting sick from it. 10 - 20 , out of how many thousands that get wet from the truck. I take the risk every year.
It's a great way to cool off in the middle of a hot day and rinse the playa dust off. Besides it's one of the things I think everyone should expierience at least once. It's fun. You might want to consider this: Follow the water truck right before you take your real shower. It will give you your first rinse and save you on water consumption. :P
If you are afraid of germs and/or getting dusty, you probably won't have a good time on the playa
You have to remember that on the playa, you get to let loose and are able to do things that you would'nt normally do in the default world.
For some of the virgin burners, you will have a bit of culture shock but you will adjust quickley

Everyone should try it at least once! Last year I would run behind it a little ways to get cooled off during the day, then shower in camp before going out for the night. I was fine once they removed the third arm from the middle of my back! A couple of my campmates were offering to dry people off last year who bathed behind the water truck but they didn't get any takers...

THE MONKEY MOBILE IS A GO! WAHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Funky Monkey Mech » Mon May 12, 2008 3:12 am

MONKEY MONKEY MONKEY MONKEY!!!! ALRIGHT EVERYBODY... i got a big question who lives in CA between San Diego to San Fran.... cause guess what if monkey did his math right ( and i am prity sure i did) guess what he picks up this coming payday.... Yes that right ladies and gents... the bus that was once known as the Naked Racer now will become the Monkey Mobile.... judging by the math.... I got more then enough to do the down payment... he wants $750 down and i will be able to give him around $1k.... some hard choices had to be made, some growing up had to be done, and some things sold but i did it :) I made enough to do the down payment.... so my question is who needs a ride.. lmao i know it sounds odd coming for me the guy who always needs a ride everywhere but finaly the stars aligned and the sun came out :)!!!!!!
But on a serious note... the thing has a 36 foot cargo deck on the top for all the playa goodies and tons of storage space in and under the bus for anything that we could need to bring.... and i can seat about 8 or 12 or more depends on how comfterble we all want to be lol staggers... The bench seats can seats ( two of them) can seat 3 to 4 each and the dining area can seat 4 so that is like lets see 4+4=8+4=12 or 3+3=6+4=10 ... I am all for taking people up because....one i know a lot of you are looking for rides from LA, SF, and Reno, Two we are all going to same camp, Three it would help save gas and reduce carbon output if 7 to 12 staggers and other burners car pooling in one burner bus there and back... and last but most important it will be a blast getting to know each other on the way up... all i am asking in return is help with the gas, some help with the driving ( must be able to drive stick... i am learning).... it going to be a long trip over 12 hours ( don't remember the exact about last time i slept most the trip up was exhausted from work.) for me from San Diego to Playa and that is not counting traffic and things when i get up to the LA and SF to pick some of you up.... and i would like break form the wheel once and a while ( longest i have gone behind the wheel is like 5 or 6 hours and that kicked my ass!), and last thing is that after i dump my waste tank and refill my water in reno nobody uses my potty unless it is a mega extreme emergency and they can't hold it and there is nowhere to stop because we are in the middle of nowhere... but on the trip between SD>LA>SF>RENO you can use the potty just please be gentle and remember it only got a 30gal storage tank on it... humm as for the gas, that might be a killer she runs on regular unleaded for now and unless somebody gives me a 90's model F-250 or F-350 diesel engine between now and the burn it will still be gas by the time the burn rolls around... It has a smaller engine then the RV i went in last year that thing was a Triton V10 and it guzzled gas but still even though it had a huge tank and used a lotta gas usually only came out to like $125 split 5 ways it was about $25 a person last year on way up and a little more on the way back because we only had 4 people... not bad... so with mine if there is like 7 of us and the bill comes out to $125 that means it will only be like 17 bucks each time we stop for gas or less....

I plan on getting on the road asap and being there for the gates opening up so... anybody who wants to come is welcome i will give staggers first shot before i go public and start offering other burners...

P.S. I don't intend on coming back to San Diego and its many stops along the way till after the temple burn on Sunday... so leave a one day cushion if you plan to travel with me because we may pull up the steaks and pack the bus and leave a few hours after the temple burns.... or if we are all to tired leave the next morning....

Let me know...

Stoner i do love your idea about the crazy psychedelic paint job how ever for now and for a long time i think she shall just remain a neutral color... like the white she is.... i like white for the same reasons as the past owner....
1. In the desert it does not absorb as much heat energy
2. It is White it makes it a bit easier to see at night... and the last reason but most important
3. White is a nice safe color... all a psychedelic paint job ( which would be mega cool if i could afford it and it did not cause the following side effects..l) will scream to a cop is
LOOK AT ME I MUST BE SOME SORT OF HIPPY, YUPPY, RAVER,BURNER, FRAT BOY... FILL IN YOUR OWN BLANK! I MUST HAVE DRUGS AND OTHER ILLEGAL THINGS ON HERE YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO PULL ME OVER FOR DOING NOTHING WRONG THEN SAY YOU WANT TO SEARCH MY BUS CAUSE YOU THINK YOU SMELL POT SMOKE IN THE AIR WHEN I OPENED MY WINDOW OR BEER ON MY BREATH WHEN I STARTED TALKING TO YOU!!!!!!
So yeah.. It will just lead to me getting pulled over more just cause they think my bus looks suspicious... for those reasons i will keep her white or some other safe color for a little while... Plus another good reason is $$$ right now i am not rolling in the dough i barley scraped together enough for a large down payment and that was only $1K... I am sure a good paint job or even the paint for me to do it by rattle can would cost me mega $$$$...( considering the good kind of paint i would want to use is like 12 bucks a can).... As much as i want to change her to something cool i am trying to think practical for now...
oh did i mention she has AC that has a filter on it :) and that since i have so much room we can seat a lot of us in there during the dust storms if we like.. lol :)

No worries about the paint job, when you're ready for it just drive up to Sac, I know a tagging crew who would be happy to do the honors!

For what it's worth, I'll chime in about showering. I brought two 5 gallon water cans and was able to shower every day (thanks totally to Mots shower set-up). I supplemented with baby wipes and the melt water from my coolers (perfect for a cold wipe-down in the middle of the day). You have to get over being shy about your body very quickly, which was actually exciting for someone VERY self conscious, like myself. Big thing to remember is not to get drunk and dump pineapple into the Evap pond-don't ask me how I know...
Also, not a bad idea to cut the hair short prior to the trip.

My application for a low-income ticket was approved, and I got it today! Just moments ago, as a matter of fact! AWESOME! Now perhaps I can go back to sleeping nights. Nah... But still, that's one less thing I have to worry about! 8)

Ha Ha HAaaaaaaaa! Yah I remember that. I was like. OMFG who dumped the fucking pineapple in the evap set up and damn they really had to try to get it in there. :P Fucking Funny!

So.. Is anyone bringing solar panels that might want to hook them up with mine so that I can double the evaporator? I'd like to make it so that I can charge the battery and run the evaporator in the day and let the battery run it through the night. Perpetual white noise of falling grey water.

This year I am coming with a buddy or 2 in an RV and will be bringing my DJ setup (turntables, laptop, lights and such). Havent had a chance to read thru all the new posts but I'll do that in the next few days to check out all the new people it looks like we have!

E_S,
Sweet!!! WE are going to have a second shade that will be the party shade. It will be on the street and there are already plans to have a PA. The DJ's will have to get together and let each other know what they can contribute. Redundancy on mixers and turntables seems like a good idea)to start things off). There has been a bit of action on the tribe side of things lately.

i remember sam dj'ing last year...did not know we had more than just the 2 of us! consolidating equipment would be great...if there are turntables and a pa system already there i could prob get away with just bringing a few items...i use a laptop & virtual vinyl setup right now so it wouldnt be much.

however, on the flip side of things...redundancy in the dj world is not a bad thing, if something breaks in the middle of a gig you need a back-up...especially in such harsh conditions as the playa. if i have space and $$ i will try & bring a full set-up, just in case.
