What kind of music would you prefer to hear out on the playa
i am just wondering what kind of music would be prefered by a stage out there. i have heard a lot here on the boards that there is a little to much electronica out there. i am trying to enlarge my library of non electronic and music from areas outside of the modern world.
i have a lot of arabic music seeing as that is my favorite music. i have some oldies beatles and other sorts from those era's, some ska and stuff in the electronica genre but almost not like the beastie boys daft punk and others.
any recomendations would be very helpfull.

Jef Stott's not bad, but you hear that kind of music all the time on the playa and off. If you want to be different, Louis Prima is the way to go. Plus Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, Woody Herman, Artie Shaw, Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington.
Seriously. Do something different. Do swing and big band.

Tom Petty / Mudcrutch
Music is a touchy subject, Some people like thinks that go Thump in the night, the Day, and whenever the artcar decides to park near you whilst sleeping.
On the other hand, I prefer music made by musicians that play an instrument. Maybe a Guitar, Sing, either way, not just loudening up thumpity Thump, but hearing something that has some meaning behind it.
I prefer Hippie Music alot of the time whilst enjoying myself out there on the playa, Quicksilver Messenger service, Mudcrutch (Tom Petty's old band that I just Saw re-united after 40 years), or Pink Floyd's early stuff, or Alman Bros. or Hot Tuna, or hey, I love the creativity of great DJ's work in the Mash-up category.
Also, nothing like some obscure Dylan to waken the old soul.

Live, acoustic, ethnic.
If it isn't live, I don't want to hear anything I've heard before.
I've been listening to indian techno, with sitar and phase altered vocals.
Best thing I heard on the playa was Joshua Bell playing violin.
With high quality, simple musical pieces take on extraordinary beauty.
Irish folk, good vocals from anywhere, a jazz trio, Artie Shaw, just a little imagination please.
If I ever bring any music, I have some italian film musicals I would bring.
It was wonderful hearing Piaf in camp last year.

I was thinking of playing a meditation mix middays with some tuvan throat singing, arabic, indian, and asian chanting, strings & flute, maybe a bit of a trance beat just to give you that little extra push into the outer realms...I also wanted to try an experiment with the Hemi-sync series of recordings and putting the speakers at opposite sides of the space so that a number of people could sit in the middle (normally you have to use headphones for the stereo seperation), & cranking em up really loud to try and drown out any surrounding noise... but im not sure if it would work...prob just give people headaches and nosebleeds lol
as the day gets later i would gradually change from more vocal dance music, disco, house, hip hop etc, to trip-hop & trance...i dont know tho, you just kind of have to play the crowd and keep em dancing no matter what kind of music you play

I grew to love psytrance, goa and all that stuff from the Playa. In 2006 I met a DJ from...was it Santa Barbara? who called himself DJ Cool Hand Luke. He gave me a mix CD. Played it loads on the drive back home, excellent stuff. Downloaded a couple other of his mixes and usually play it around the house on the weekends, at parties, and even while at work.
Otherwise, I would love to hear St. Etienne on the playa, particularly their 2003 CD Finisterre. Great stuff
