Burning Sam Parade
There are a few of us making "Burning Sam" outfits for the burn.
Yes, Uncle Sam inspired outfits, but perhaps more inspired and colorful, perhaps dreamy.
We will be holding a Burning Sam Parade.
Any patriotic outfit welcome!
Donkeys, elephants, eagles, Betsey Ross, Abe Lincoln, Lady Liberty, George and Martha Washington, and all the usual characters all welcome.
Bring kazoos and noise makers, your instruments, your protest signs.
Of course a marching band that would like to join us would be great!
We will start at Center Camp and end at our camp "Camp Conumdrum", where will will serve liquid Apple Pie (spiced cider and rum), so plan on joining us!
We will let you know WHEN, when we know!
By the way. Can we list an "event" in the "who, what where", without having a registered theme camp?
Any advice as to the best time/day to hold our parade?
(Not, during the heat of the day).

Regarding picking a date...
I wonder, will the bunnies be marching on Thursday again? Was there a winged Wed parade? I missed that one. We did a small green and orange parade with friends--I can't remember when.
The Billion Bunny March was the highlight of 2007 for me.
It is difficult to remember all of the various parades. And last year's guide was ridiculous, and useless.
Any not too busy day suggestions?
I'm thinking of having a rubber stamp that says:
Burning Sam Parade
Center Camp
00/00/08
0 o'clock
then I could stamp maps or rear ends or similar real estate

Burning Sam Sewing Bees- Portland, Oregon
BURNING SAM
SEWING BEES IN PORTLAND, OREGON
WHY?
I want to help you make a dreamy Burning "Uncle" Sam costume for Burning Man or just weird parading around town. Rich and I are organizing a parade called "Burning Sam" at BM which will include all manner of patriotic folks and will end with the serving of liquid "apple pie".
HOW?
Yes, you get to help... I'll even teach you how to use a sewing machine. You supply the pattern, fabric, and cut the thing out. I'll help you fit it and sew. You design it! Weird uncle Sams Welcome- green money, rainbow, psychedelic, B&W , flaming, pink, glitter, Steampunk
Do you have a portable machine and want to help sew? That would be great! Be a regular Betsy Ross!
Early birds will have theirs ready for the Oregon, May primary election. It would be nice to have ALL of these done by SOAK ( the PDX Regional) in late June, then you'll also be ready to Yankee doodle it on the 4th of July!
Don't live in Portland??? start your own local sewing Bees! REPLICATE!
PATTERN: McCalls Uncle Sam pattern
www.mccallpattern.com/item/M8701.htm
size & yardage info there
FABRIC:
Patriotic fabrics and novelty stuff it the quilting section
www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp
more good stuff in the store including flames and Steampunk clocks and tattoo flash.
Sheets from Goodwill are a great source of stripes.
NOTE: cotton and blends- wash, dry and iron BEFORE you cut it out.
There is a Joann Fabrics Superstore in Tigard and several other places. Watch the paper for coupons
HATS-
ELOPE: www.elope.com/estylez_ps.aspx
perhaps we could do a wholesale order...(or make one to match, one is included in the pattern, but stiff interfacing is expensive

Update: Parade at SOAK and Seewing bee #2 (TBD)
PROJECT UPDATE:
----------------
As of this weekend, "K" has a Burning "Uncle" Sam jacket , "R" has a jacket and both have the rest of their suit pieces cut out. "C" has half a pair a pants! Huzzah!
The party room at Max's brew pub was a great place to work last Saturday, with good light, big tables, two sewing machines, a fabric store close by to pick up any needed notions and Lebowski on the big screen and good porter!
BURNING SAM PARADE AT SOAK- PDX Regional
--------------------
My goal is to complete the Burning Sam suits by SOAK, June 27th,
where we will have the first American Dream Burning Sam Parade.
WHEN WILL WE SEW AGAIN?
-----------------------
I'm hoping to hold another sewing bee session at Max's Fanno Creek Brew Pub on Saturday, May 17th, 11- 6 pm in Tigard (main street just off Hwy 99).
Please RSVP and let me know if you can make it. If a few respond, I'll go ahead reserve the party room, and will confirm by posting here.
In the meantime, please purchase a pattern in your size, and the yardage and notions as listed on the back of the envelope, and let me know you would like help with a Burning Sam costume.

we have another version in XL available if you need it.
You do not need to know how to sew, I will help you. However, you do need to participate by cuttting out your own project, and ironing it, and attending and helping out at the sewing bee.
Bring a sewing machine and an iron if you have one. Don't forget sharp scissors, pins, notions, and matching thread.
REPLICATE:
---------
If you do sew, of course sew your own Burning Sam suit and, sew some outfits for your friends. It would be great to have an entire HERD of SAMS from all over represent!
I have some fabric to share, that I will bring with me to the next sewing Bee.

Looking forward to seeing all of you sparkly people! Elephants and donkeys (even the donkey f*ckers!) and eagles welcome too!
I found a R,W& B umbrella at a thrift shop the other day. It might be getting some ribbons...
BTW: We'll also be doing this parade at SOAK- the Portland (Oregon) Regional June 27-29

Changing our Camp name:
We will register as "Burning Sam Camp" and have forged an alliance with the Bombay Tea Company. Hopefully we will be neighbors.
We will wait to see if we are placed to determine starting place. We will finish the parade at our camp.

Hi there Unjonharley! Great score on the hat! Thanks for telling me, I may pick up a few extras before SOAK- see you there at the sTEAp Tea Parlour. http://www.burningmanportland.com
BTW: If anyone wants an "American Made" Burning "Uncle" Sam costume, "Elope" Hats are made in Colorado, USA and they are beauties!
I own several of their hats, They make all sorts of really nice burny hats! Google it. Order through your local costume shops or party stores.
Just finished the Theme Camp Questionaire and the Burning Sam Camp
web site early this morning! Huzzah!
Submitted the parade to the w,w,w, online-calendar too.
The web site needs a bit of steamy dressing up but the FAQs are all there... http://home.teleport.com/~fletcher

The Amazing Story of Burning Sam
and the Bomb Bay Tea Company
*****************************
It seems the airship, The Victoriana's Revenge has crashed in Black Rock City, in the land of Burning Man.
While waiting for ship repairs, the crew carries on in a most civilized manner by cracking open the shipwrecked cargo and offering tea and dainties to the natives.
The company entertains itself and it's guests with wit and hospitality. Tea leaves are read by experts of tasseography- the Countess Stormfeather of Walks-Upon-Water and her companions in the outdoor Western Victoriana Parlour.
Several tents from the airship crew have been taken over as gaming dens.
Wednesday, a parade is organized to welcome the airship crew to it's new home in Black Rock City.
Burning "uncle" Sam leads the way!
Is it a DREAM?
At least it is a really fun nightmare! ...
