Guess I can buy the bike for the tires and sell it after Burning Man..
Save $5 and get some gears and bearing to mess with? Sounds like a plan to me.

it's been raining for a long tie around here too. but I'll not complain. Last year we had a pretty serious drought.

contraptioneering has shifted into 2nd gear here in the north west..

Traded in the wrong bearing for others and a lighter/smaller shaft. The bearing and carriers are lighter also.. Every ounce counts when peddeling on the playa

It's a shame to rip the new bycycle apart for parts.. Will try to save it.. Could get some of my money back if I can put the parts back..

No steam this year.. But will punk what ever gets in my road..

Another Contraptioneer

Post by gyre » Thu May 22, 2008 4:48 am

Everyone is capable of doing extraordinary things, each in his own way.
Some are perfectly happy doing simple things, in good spirits.
Others however, concentrate on details.
We are all different and it really doesn't matter if you focus on space travel or work in the fields.
What is important is to do what you really want.

Alexandre Kemurdzhian, contraptioneer

developed robotics and oversaw the first successful robotics missions to the moon, the lunokhod in the early seventies
Worked with jpl on the mars mission.
Helped build remote controlled heavy equipment used in cleanup at Chernobyl in a very short time.

It would be a really cool thing for the playa to bring any version of his creations.
They all look interesting, even without the nuclear furnace.
I had even forgotten they first put a probe on the moon in 1966.

We've got to get our minds off sad things, remember our pals now gone, yes.... but also keep on thinking of what we're going to do while we're still here in this wacky place. So to keep on carrying on, I'll add that I got the drains done for the intake part of the engine and moved the exhaust port to allow any collected condensation on that side to flow out and up the pipe!!

And I blackened the heads and sort of gave the whole thing a start on the antiquing treatment.

Here's a pic from the back, showing the drain system for the intake passage:

And here's a pic of the front, showing the new exhaust port location and a short, temporary exhaust pipe:

And here's a detail pic of the heads, showing the newly installed oil cups, which provide lube to the rotary valves.

Keep your head up unjon. Rustypants will need some projects soon, else he'll get in a long term funk. And that cannot be allowed to happen. Shopcats need projects.

And now just a little playa dust~~~ And it should be ready for the Museum.

Its amazing what a great patina just a little playa dust will give something, isn’t it?

So my brother came by and picked up Karine and I today and we headed over to the state capital to see something that you just don’t get to see every day.

There’s this fellow named R.J. Corman… he started a railroad sometime back and has done pretty well for himself and those who work for him. His company does a lot of recovery work and track repair. They also own a good bit of the rail lines in central Kentucky, many of which are on long term lease to CSX.

Well, Mr. Corman is known around here for having some pretty cool things with which to have fun and generate public relations buzz for the company. What we saw today was the latest addition to the collection, and probably the most wonderful in my opinion… but first I’ve got to give little back story.

China‘s railroads, up until a few years ago, relied very heavily on steam engines for keeping things moving. Many are still in use there today on some of the tributary lines, but they are being phased out as they age and no factories remain that produce steam locomotives. The old engines just get scrapped and melted into something else, most certainly with much less character.

So Mr. Corman, it seems, found one that was ready to be cut up, and instead of letting her go the way of so many other fine creations, he saw fit to buy her out of her fate, have her completely refurbished, and ship her over here. Her job is now to work for the RJ Corman Railroad. Today was her inaugural run from Louisville to Lexington, pulling six brand new gondola cars for the railroad company, each filled with sand. This was not just a symbolic run, however, but actual work. This sand was to be delivered to a concrete plant in Lexington and the new cars to Corman’s railyard in Nicholasville where they will be incorporated into the rest of the system.

The guys we talked to with the company said that after this run, she’ll be doing P.R. work and keep steam available to be seen to people who’ve never had the chance to see it. One of the coolest things, I thought, was that the engineer was probably in his mid-late twenties. Good to see it being handed down.

Kudos to Mr. Corman.

Here she is after crossing the bridge into downtown Frankfort:

And just after coming to a stop:

And the manufacturers plate, in Chinese, showing date of creation. Its hard to read in the photo, due to glare, and the 8 looks like a 3, but it says 1986.

With this being a locally owned engine, I hope to be seeing more of her around. Corman also owns the Old Kentucky Dinner Trainin Bardstown, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she might find work pulling the dinner cars along the route now and again, but I'm not sure if that will happen or not. Either way, its nice to see a new steamer on the rails.

Wow, what a cool Engine! I've always loved trains and if I ever find time for yet another hobby (and a room for it) I hope to do a model train layout sometime. That engine looks so old and yet it's just 22 years old! I guess the old designs still work well. Thanks for the neat pics!

Very Cool Mr. Kitty Cat!

We have the pleasure of having the rail road museum in Carson City, Nv. and one in Old Sacramento as well. Been to both quite a few times in my life, is always such a pleasure to see and feel something that can wash over you and bring such wonderful memories to your mind and soul.

Kinda like this wonderful old thread!

These are so cool, I'm really glad you posted the pictures. I didn't know there were any steam locomotives still in operation, and I didn't know any were made after about 1950 or so.
In Snoqualmie, WA (25 miles from here) there is a "Railroad Museum", but all it is is a place where a bunch of old steam locos and cars were parked and left.
There's a chain-link fence around them, and they aren't preserved, just parked. It's still kinda' cool because they are sitting there exactly as last used, unmolested except by the weather.

I should go and take some pictures.

Look at all that rusty of stuff!

Could you imagine if you had something like that nearby as a kid? The cab of one of those engines would make the ultimate secret club house…

Saturday was a big day around here. The engine, temporarily mounted in place and running on air, powered the flywheel up to speed without straining. There is one small issue of a “sticky spotâ€

What a cool machine! You had me watching the video a couple dozen times : ) There's a gold mine of whirring spinning parts at work there, can hardly wait to see when that engine is puffing steam. Is that its approximate work RPM? I missed seeing the rolling Contraption last year (but happy to catch it in camp) I will find you with my trike this year! I was out painting it a shocking yellow today, dreaming of playatime.

Wow! What a great productive weekend you've had! The engine runs great and looks right at home in the Contraption! Congrats on a successful first attempt! Looking forward to seeing the boiler!

For those interested in steam, there are groups around the country restoring these things.
I have a friend in the area that bought a railroad with friends.
There is always a lot of work to do.

Your sure whipping up some great rusty junk..

Glad you got to see that train..

There are people from all over the world that travel to ride on old trains..

There is a group of retired train people around the Portland area..
They have restored a huge engine.. The same type as you saw..

Few years ago my kids took me up the Columbia gorge to ride one back down to Portland..We went up the night before and moteled it..
The next morning I was up early and ready to go..

The kids found train person to be with me and asured them I would have a seat in the rear dining car window..

My vision was down to about ten % at that time and things were not"looking"up..

So I could hear its whistle screaming and coulds make out the puffs of smoke over the city.

As it was backing into the station it suddenly stop with a thud..

god damn thing fell off the tracks.. Or at least one car did..
The equipment car just behind the tender was laying half way on the ground.. Some how or an other it sliped off it's trucks..

Well that was the car that supplied the lights and power to the passanger cars.. Also it powered the kitchen car..

So I got to see the gorge by car..
AAA Gain

But on the up side.....

When I was 9 years old I lived in an Iowa town called Woolstock.. It is half way between Eaglegrove and Webster City.. Each day a train with one frieght car, one passanger car and a mail car would come through..

My Grandmother saw the hand writing on the wall: Steam trains were on there way out..

She took me to Webster City on the noon run to buy some shoes.. Then back on the evening run.. Just to make sure I would have ridden a steam "passanger" train..

When she met my Grandfather he was a coal shoveler on the Sparta line in Wisc.. His great watch is still in the family..As a kid I thought it must weigh five pounds..

I stole my first real key from that station in Woolstock..Knowing the Morrise code gave me a good seat in the Navy years later..

During WWII every kid learned the code and could make a key out of a couple wires..

Heheheh dontcha love a zero clearance fit! I have mill tooling at work that to get the wheel off the arbor I have to heat it with a hair dryer...and warm it up on a hot plate before putting it back on. Wait till next year and you have to realign something on that playa-caked corroded shaft...yeah my talltrike shafts really gave me fits recently but the gears got changed : )
