People do the dumbest things just to stay in the "herd"
I asked a person the other day: What would you run out and buy in the face of a disaster.. The answerer: One, batteries and two a generator..
If the power go's you will not be able to power your house with a generator.. With gas at 4$ a gallon or more. and no power to pump the gas in the first place..
I have an extended cold, cooler with a insulated box around it..(sits in the yard) I'm saving money to buy a small ice maker.. Make ice for the cooler in a couple hours for the week.. I already have a generator and going 12 volt solar.. I have a wind up flash light and a 21 LED lamp.. Tested the lamps batteries.. The will give light for a week non stop.. Three D cells.. Looking for a solar battery charger for little batteries..
We have two wood burning stoves for just in case.. one we can heat and cook the other for cooking only.. That one burns twig's supper hot.. It's called a Rocket Stove... You make them yourself..
There is plenty of day light to read a good book by and go to bed at sun down..
THat's pretty much it for electric..
NExt is water..

drunken ramblings?
I have the only thing I will need in the case of a disaster; My gun. With that I can procure anything else that I may need.
But seriously, batteries and a genny sound like a pretty good plan to me. Batteries can get you by for days if you only use them for the necessities. A genny is a great thing to have when the power goes out and assuming that you are not going to be stranded at home for months on end then gasoline will still be available (even if you have to steal it). I'm not really sure what kind of disaster you are talking about. I mean, a knife, a little bit of food, a camping stove, and some blankets are all one really needs to survive a couple weeks. Anything longer than that and we aren't talking about surviving a disaster, we are talking about surviving the apocalypse.

Generators are nice but I'd go with solar and wind power. The sun will always come up tomorrow unless the clouds cover it...and where there's clouds more often than not there's wind...at least that's how it is out here in cornland. One can't count on gas being available...as I've already learned out here as gas prices have made it impossible for the old pumps to work anymore. It's 25+ miles to the nearest gas station now.

Ah!Dan, I too have a gun.. It's for puting holes in grass hoppers that didn't put away for a bad day..
I live in earth quake country.. Where sewer, water and electric can be gone in seconds.. Not to mention streets that can turn into a large hole..
Mountains around here blow the hell up too..Every approch to my city is over any # of bridges..
Even with the bridges intact, Everything is trucked to the city.
No fuel no trucks..

Best answer I've seen yet. Well next to that cooler and something in it.Kinetic V wrote:Generators are nice but I'd go with solar and wind power.
