Regionals.....but WHY??

Post by flatlander13 » Wed May 21, 2008 10:53 am

Hi this is Flatlander13….I had cosmetic brain surgery; I use to be Scout13…..new brain….new name…..if you are on Tribe I'm Flatlander.

SO…..I don't get the draw of Regionals and Decompressions. For me It's Burning Man or nothing…..I'm not really interested in Burning Man-like events. Please tell me what draws you to a Regional or Decompression.

Just so you know I live in Seattle so going to Burning Man for me is right next to going to heaven. It's hot, it's dry, my friends and other wack-a-loons are there, I love the art and the fact that nobody is selling me anything. I have been to the SF Decompression and really didn't get it…….so help a poor soul and tell me what I am missing.

A small cozy gathering of friends where we can burn shit and party and do art and just get nekid? Why would I miss it? Like having more than one flavor of ice cream, or a variety of shoes, or reading different books ... but then I really like our little regional. It isn't a substitute for Burning Man, it is something else entirely. And one hell of a way to touch base with all the crazy Utah burners.

And we have it on a salt marsh, which is pre-playa geologically speaking.

What makes BM(TM) that special for you to the point where you wouldn't be interested in anything "BM-like"?

Obviously, tens of thousands of people feel the way you do.

Do you feel happy in the anonymity of a big city?

Why? Less cops, no DEA, cool people and an excuse to leave suburbia for a day or two.

Being that I live in Seattle….first I LOVE the heat and the desert environment…..I love the art….I spend at least part of every day playing a game where I look around find a piece of art that I haven’t seen ride to it and take it in…from there I look around for the next piece of art that I haven’t seen and so on. I can spend hours doing this.

I don’t care about the cops and DEA because I don’t drink, smoke, do drugs…..bla bla bla. Not that I care if you do……

I love the anonymity of Black Rock City. Mostly If I don’t know you I don’t say much….I am a real smart ass SOB, but that’s if I know you. Being at Burning Man I feel relaxed…..

I also absorb my environment easily….I got to BM every other year just so it’s fresh for me. BM changes so much in 2 years that it’s always an adventure.

That’s why it’ the place to be.

Because our drive to Reno takes 30 hours.

I used to think "how could I ever like a regional" but I like regionals a LOT more than Burning Man now. Honestly, they're different animals but regionals are a lot more fun for me now. I just got back from Flipside in Austin yesterday. It was great. Try a regional sometime. It's not Burning Man but it's awesome.
It's what you make it.

Some Regionals have had more LEO's per capita then BM. Some Regionals are very cliquish. Some are nothing more than a group of swingers looking for fresh meat under the guise of being a Regional.

But it's up to you to decide which ones you want to attend. I suggest joining whichever one your interested in's email group. That will give you a good idea of the level of enthusiasm. If there's only a few people who post out of say, 400 members, that might give you a clue. If you have many different people on a list posting, and ideas are flowing, then that would be one I would be more likely to attend.

I am quite proud to say, as an Arizona resident, that we have one of the BEST Regionals and Decom out there! It's a very diverse group of people, and we actually ENJOY having families (i.e. children attend). We have some of the youngest firespinners out there who were taught at our events! In fact, another Regional that has gone deeply into debt, has now moved out of their own state (where they're not welcome) to Arizona! Go figure! We must be doing something right!

While it's not really a regional, there were only 3-5 cops present at Joshua Tree Music Festival a couple weeks ago and as far as I know they weren't harassing anyone (though one guy was arrested for running around naked, breaking people's windows and screaming, "I'M A BABY SEAL!!!").

I can feel you on that. I'm lucky that Burning man itself is so close to me. So maybe that makes it less of an issue being that I'm in Sacramento. I could see if you were on the East Coast how a Reginal could be so much better for you at that point, but for me I just love the Playa too much to want to do it anywhere else.

I went to Lightning in a Bottle the other weekend and had a great time, but it was no burning man either. Still a lot of fun though.

my 2 cents

Just got back from E-11. Okay, it is no Burning Man, but it rocks and I love the people and the energy. Check my blog for pics.

Ummm... which ones are the swinger groups looking for fresh meat? I'd like to buy my plane tickets early...

Cliqueish? You mean having a population under 10,000. ;)

If you don't like a particular regional, fine, just don't make petty back-handed remarks. It is unbecoming and seems ... obsessive.

Fake Regionals!
What's the 800 number of the regionals control board? Report them!
And disguised as some sort of sex party? I'll bet there's social nudity and public drunkenness!

eh, a fun party is a fun party. I also go to scooter rallies and other non-BM events. Sure, they aren't BM, but I still enjoy them and they're usually a lot closer for me.

Why would you ask that someone describe for you that which you indicate you have no interest in attending?
