Water prep

Post by sightfuleyes » Sat Jun 07, 2008 4:29 pm

I was wondering if any one has either head of or has used one of these bags for water storage.

This is planning that is years off but I would still like to know what works and what does not.

Thank you.

No reason why it wouldn't work, though you would be risking your entire water supply to an accidental puncture. It would also make packing difficult - it would need to be at the bottom, but you can't stack anything sharp on top of it. Or you'd have to build a covering or platform of some sort to go over it.

The main thing I notice is that with shipping it's $2 per gallon not including water. So you either get questionable water from some hose, or you pay again to get it filled. Unless you plan to use it several times throughout the year for other things I'd suggest simply buying 1 or 2.5 gallon jugs on your way to the event. It's known-good water, you can buy exactly the amount that you need, and it's easy to manage. $1/gallon or less depending on where you buy it. Buy it still in the cardboard boxes for easy stacking.

so no need to spend cash on high volume water storage? that saves some cash. Any water tips that are required reading that are not on the main burning man page?

Multiple 2.5 gallon jugs (the rectangular ones with a built in handle on the top) seem to work well. And they stack.

Some of the big camps do bring water in big containers, often 55 gallon drums.

But basically, for person use a gallon is a gallon, so multiple small containers is usually for convenient.

One of our campmates has used one for several years. He put's it on top of his VW Westie! Only draw back is that the water gets too hot. Great for showers!

Don't forget that water weighs just over 8 lbs a gallon. 60 x 8+ is over 480 lbs sloshing around in your vehicle.

I have an army surplus version of that but a third the size. When full it is damn heavy. I only use it for showers. To transport I wrap in a tarp on top of my heaviest boxes or beer cases, nothing on top of it unless it's feather light and soft. I only use it because it's my dad's and he insists I bring it every year because he knows what's best even though he's never been to BM and I'm a grown woman but it's not worth the fight if I refuse to bring it... tmi. :)

Anyway, just bring the 2.5 gallon jugs and crush them when empty for easy transport home. Way cheaper, way easier, unless you're gifting water to the masses or something.

i have seen those 2.5 gallon jugs of spring water with the handles...they are $2.99 at longs drug store.

i know the surviver guide says to bring a minimum of 1.5 gallons per person, per day. will they let you in if you only bring 1 gallon per person per day? i was going to use this for drinking water and buy ice and let it melt for cleaning water. i won't be cooking anything because i can't cook very well under normal circumstances.

No one actually measures your water supply. We get by on alot less, but we have a dry kitchen and few showers.

I know what you're thinkin'. On the way back, the sacks will take up no room at all. But you got the space. Why not use something that you can fill with trash for the trip back?

People have been turned away without water and have come in without water.

Water is supposed to work better if you mix a little glycerol in it. Marathoner's trick. Can anyone confirm?
