BRC Taxis

Post by Ron » Mon Jun 02, 2008 10:53 am

I've wanted to get some pedicabs and be part of a BRC taxi service for years but I just haven't been able to get ahold of a pedicab for a price I was willing to pay, nor get one there. So it's time, and past time, to reach out. :)

Anyone else like the notion of using pedicabs to run a BRC Taxi service, when mood hits us? Anyone got a pedicab they're planning on bringing that I could borrow for a bit? I'm sure we could work out some kind of trade. Or does anyone in the Seattle area have one I could borrow and take to the playa, even if you're not going to be able to make it this year?

Sing out if you're interested or just leave me alone over here, in the dark, eating dog food.....

;)

I could never handle dog food. Chunks too big. Maybe if you put some milk on it though...

Could you maybe find an old trike from a thrift store and convert it to a pedicab with rear facing seats?

Just a thought, not sure if it's worth much.

nd you could put a little LED "Taxi" sign on a pole or shade cover and flip it on and off as you saw fit. Then yell at people if they try to flag you down while not in service.

You need sponsorship.

yeah... i hadn't planned on asking mac donalds to fund the kinetic sculpture, but i could use tips and tricks for art project fund raising. i didn't realize that this was such a criminal idea, seeing as there are a lot of artists who get donations and sponsorship for their projects...

why is it so secretive?

This is a multi-leveled issue.

The idea is that you do not get corporate sponsorships to do art at Burning Man. But it‘s been known to get a bit more fuzzy than that. Most projects have sponsorship of some sort. It could be simply sweat and work from friends, or it could be someone with expendable income funding a large scale art piece or camp… or anything in between.

(*sigh* I almost hate to bring this up but...) Some have even gone so far as to seek funding from a well known automobile manufacturer, having their piece (at Burning Man) appear in a car commercial, and then bragging about said sponsorship in print. But that only happened once that I know of and it was frowned upon greatly at the time, at least by those who I talked to. The Org even stepped in with legal wrangling, so I understand. What ever happened behind the scenes, it sort of diappeared after all that.

I’ve also heard of other incidents involving energy drink companies handing out product as a “gift“, but haven’t seen them.
Why so secretive?
So to try and answer your question, its not cool to get funding and then hawk the place you got the funding from while at the burn. There's plenty of add noise outside the playa. No need to bring it in there as well. You could apply for a grant from Burning Man (ETA: I just saw that you did get a grant in you rother thread... congrats!). You could hold a Fun-draiser (House-warming-type party with friends and neighbors, but for making art?), or you could simply save your money and work with what you can find.

Maybe there’s a rich executive in your family who would like to fund something. That’d be handy, but the deal is that can’t be any advertising or expectation of being compensated for your work (or for your rich executive family member's funds). It’s a gift you‘re giving, after all.

There are also occasionally grants available to help artists develop their careers that are, for all practical purposes, no strings attached use it for what you want. Check with your local or state arts groups.

My advice would be to work and save and fund it yourself. Then you don’t have someone (or some group) who plopped down a bunch of cash telling you what direction your project is now going to be heading in. I prefer that approach, myself.

It is even more complex than that and perhaps not for anyone that feels unsure of what they are doing.
I think there is quite a lot of sponsorship, mostly charitable and hoping for some marketing benefit.
I think that the Euchrion thing might have been okay if they had handled it differently, kept the org aware and done promotion in a more elegant way.
I notice the company has been much more sophisticated in their approach recently with other things they have done.

I think raw materials are often donated too.

sweet! thanks for these positive words of wisdom. i'm much obliged. i'm going to hold some in house fundraisers that include a swanky meal and some mildly strange entertainment, as well as searching out some private grants. i will totally look into a local gov arts grant too, thats a really keen idea.

again, thank you!

Fundraisers are pretty easy in the bay area.
Totally freaking impossible in most places.

That's the way I would go there.
