Just go for efficiency.
Multiple small drivers may work,
Some odd impedances are used for low power some times.

Ubuntu 8.04: a first look

http://www.heise-online.co.uk/open/Ubun ... res/110605

24 April 2008, 19:06

Dr. Oliver Diedrich

With Ubuntu 8.04, its developers have produced the first version with Long Term Support (LTS) in two years. Three years of updates are guaranteed by Canonical, the firm behind Ubuntu, for the desktop version, with five years granted for the server version. Ubuntu 8.04 is therefore also attractive for the business world. Ubuntu sponsor Mark Shuttleworth hopes that the new version of Ubuntu will become a serious competitor to Suse Linux and Red Hat Linux with certification by Sun.

Ubuntu is pursuing a different strategy to Novell and Red Hat, the leading Linux distributors who have one version for companies – Suse Linux Enterprise, Red Hat Enterprise Linux – and another for consumers that can be downloaded for free – OpenSuse, Fedora. The latter is updated twice a year, whereas a new Enterprise version is released every two to three years. But with Ubuntu, there is no distinction between consumers and enterprises. Every fourth semi-annual release is an LTS version with extended support – the last such version, Ubuntu 6.06, was released in June 2006.

As usual in LTS versions, the focus is not primarily on new functions, but rather on stability and user friendliness. There are no revolutionary new features. Instead, the focus is on up-dating and tweaking the software included.

Distributions

Ubuntu 8.04 is available in a number of variants. The standard distribution consists of a choice of CD image available in a desktop version, a server version, and an "Alternate Install" version, each of which is also available in a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. The desktop version is a Live CD whose uncomplicated installer puts the system on your hard disk with a few mouse clicks. At least 384 MB RAM is required.

The two other variants use a text mode installer that offers users more options, such as RAID volumes and the Logical Volume Manager (LVM); it can also run in 256 MB RAM. Desktop and Alternate Install set up a preconfigured desktop system; the server version does without a graphical interface.

The Ubuntu DVD puts all of these options on a single medium. For the server installation, press F4 to open "Options" under the menu item "Install in text mode". "Test Ubuntu" boots a live system, which can also install the operating system, while "Install Ubuntu" launches the GUI installer rather than booting into a live system – it also runs in 256 MB of RAM. If you use the desktop CD, you have to choose the boot option "only-ubiquity" when booting to launch the installer directly without a live system.

There also a number of Ubuntu variants that use a desktop other than the standard GNOME. Kubuntu uses KDE 3 or the new KDE 4 ("Remix"), and Xubuntu uses the lightweight XFCE desktop. Gobuntu installs a standard Ubuntu exclusively with open source software – no proprietary drivers, applications, or firmware files. Edubuntu focuses on software for schools. Mythbuntu uses Ubuntu to set up a PVR system. Aside from the main Ubuntu version, only Edubuntu has the LTS stamp and therefore benefits from extended support.

You can probably find a pirate version of Sony Vegas out there. It's pretty simple to use.
I want to thank you for this advise. I downloaded a trial version, and it is doing exactly what I needed. I will probably finish this project before the trial time runs out, but think I will purchase a permanent copy in the near future as I know I will get roped into other projects.

Thanks again

I have 2 computers and want to back one up to the second, or to a seperate drive in the same computer - Any settings that will automatically save to two drives?

What i am looking for is complete redundancy. I simply want to switch drives if one fails.

I really i would like every program, os and data copied to another drive, and thereafter automatically.

any thoughts?

Are you using windows xp?

there is a feature called, " Files and settings transfer".

You should do that first if you are using windows xp on both computers if you dont want or know about ghosting.

I wont go any further about directions till you let me know which operating system you are using.

maybe some others in this thread know where I am going to in case I dont post back in a reasonable enough amount of time.

There used to be a program called Ghost, from semantic I think, that would make a working copy of any HDD onto any other HDD as long as it had enough HDD space for the installed programs and os. Generally speaking this meant any hdd that was the same size or larger. The last version I saw of it was in 2001. I am sure there is an updated version. It probably isn't cheap as it was intended for computer manufacturers and bussinesses with a need to copy a partivulr configurastion onto a variety of different HDDs.

Thanks Box -

I am DL'ing it as I type this. I am just sick of having a computer at work, laptop on the road, and a computer at home, with different settings and so on. I want three identical computers, that update themselves so they are all the same, right down to the screensaver and favorites list.

All have a T1 connection available during most of the day.

I know there's ways to transfer / synchronize your Firefox settings from PC to PC via plugins and the like...but what you're asking for doesn't seem to exist yet. Norton Ghost is not the product you're looking for either....it's got many uses but what you described is not one of them.

Hmm. Not exactly what you're looking for but I have an idea. You could raid two hard drives so that they are exact copies. The problem would be they are both in the same computer. I know they used to sell kits that let you easily pull out hard drives from the front of the computer. Get four of those and add the slots to each computer. Just take the drives with you back and forth. Not as elegant as could be done, but it might do the job.

I've seen something that mirrors drives on startup and can do that when two machines are connected.
Seems I've seen something that would do this over the net, like the idea of having the system on servers instead of the machine.
I think the idea with mirroring on startup was to act as a backup in case of contamination.

I've seen that too, but only where it returns to some preset configuration, not where it saves changes made each time, then backs up with the new changes.

AZ, your link helped me find some tools I needed to fix a problem on a family member's PC that's been driving her crazy for weeks. That tool is Process Explorer...which is referenced during the presentation and on the powerpoint slides...it's found here for those who just want to go take a look at it without the fluff.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysi ... fault.aspx

Thank you AZ!

And as far as Firefox goes....I wish I hadn't waited so long to switch...but I'm sure glad I did. Download some flash and script killing addons and you take back your browsing experience.

Firefox actually made using the internet enjoyable again.

For anyone that's interested in the best way to download a youtube video, one can do it through firefox. Just get the mozilla add on called Video DownloadHelper 3.0.4
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006
After that just get any flv to avi converter: http://www.onlyfreewares.com/Audio-Vide ... verter.php
then once the file is converted, just use any video editing software to extract the audio from the video and your done.

Ta Daaaaa!

P.S. I should have let it be known that the last part is for grabbing the music from the video to make an MP3.

KV, Firefox 3 is in beta. Still have some querks and I'm sure the windows techs are writting bugs for it now. Try opening IE and using both for eplaya to compare the speed.

Sysinternals has alot of great stuff. I use the autostart to free up alot cpu and memory. It stops alot of malware. Use the TCPView to look at who and what is connecting to the internet. You can kill any connection that opens because of web page axtive X's and the like. It has a Whois option. This is very powerful stuff. I would advise renaming all of them to nonsense names. Malware is getting sophisticated to the point they can identify process names and block them from running. Watch the whole video and remember to run all their programs as an admin.

I like to use their tech forums found alot of info there.

I open IE....inside of Firefox using IE Tab.

When I made the switch...I really made the switch. I only use IE if the site flat refuses to work with Firefox and so far I've only found one site that balked.

As far as overall quirks go...I've found NONE. It just works. And flawlessly...what more can you ask for? I love it!

Google Is Polishing Off Chrome, Its New Web Browser

Posted by Eric Zeman, Sep 1, 2008 03:59 PM

http://www.informationweek.com/blog/mai ... oogle.html

es, you read that correctly. Google (NSDQ: GOOG) is taking a major swipe at its competitors with the imminent launch of Chrome, a new Web browser based on Webkit. Thus marks the beginning of a new phase in the browser wars.

Kara Swisher at All Things Digital got perhaps one of the biggest scoops of the year. She spoke to some people familiar with some of the projects Google is working on. Those sources say that Google is set to unveil a brand new Web browser that will be available to everyone as early as tomorrow (Tuesday).

Not only is Google going announcing a new browser, but it is making the announcement with a comic book. That's hot.

Google has talked the browser talk for years. The last time I heard anything formal about it from the Google camp was nearly a year ago. Looks like Google is ready to walk the browser walk with Chrome.

Here are some details about what makes Chrome so great, as relayed by Blogoscoped.

Chrome is an open source browse based on Webkit. It will include aspects of Google's Gears. It will include a JavaScript Virtual Machine that is being dubbed "V8". This virtual machine, built by a bunch of coders in Denmark, can be embedded within another browser. It will also help render pages faster.

Google is taking some features from Firefox, such as the tabs, and adding its own spin, placing them above the address bar rather than below it. The address bar will have an auto-complete feature, much like that of Firefox. The Chrome browser home page will offer a speed-dial feature, similar to the one seen on Opera's desktop browser.

My favorite feature is that Chrome will have a "privacy" mode. Surfing with the privacy setting enabled will create a new browsing window and allow you to browse with no history of what occurs in that window being stored on the computer. In other words, you can browse sites and no one will be able to track down where you've been on that machines.

A few other things include the ability to launch Web applications in their own browser window, absent the address bar, and tools to help fight malware and phishing.

This all sounds amazing so far. Google appears to be taking some of the great features of Firefox and Opera, merging them, and setting it up as an open source project.

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s Internet Explorer still has the lion's share of the market. Firefox and, to a lesser extent, Opera, have put a dent in that marketshare. Neither, however, has matched Microsoft.

How will Chrome compare? Can it stand up to such weathered competition? Will it really take marketshare away from Microsoft, or will it bleed users away from Firefox and Opera?

Only time will answer those questions. Until then, I am looking forward to taking Chrome for a test spin.

Large Hadron Collider scientists receiving death threats

Trendwatch
By Humphrey Cheung
Friday, September 05, 2008 18:17

Geneva (Switzerland) – The Large Hadron Collider is just a few days from being switched on, but the scientists in charge of the 17-mile long super collider are already getting impassioned pleas to stop their work, some of the scientists have even received death threats. According to a Telegraph UK article, CERN, the organization that is in charge of the LHC, has been inundated with emails and calls from concerned citizens, part-time scientists and others. James Gillies, CERN’s public relations spokesperson, says many of the people want to delay or stop next week’s test, but there’s no chance of that happening.

On September 10th, scientists at the LHC will fire the first proton beams down the super collider. These proton beams will have a modest 450 GeV or less than one-tenth of the collider’s full strength and no collisions are expected because the beams will only be fired one way through the tunnel. Eventually CERN hopes the LHC help scientists discover the elusive Higgs-Boson particle by smashing together proton beams with 5-7 TeV worth of energy.

Some scientists have theorized that such collisions could cause a miniature black hole to form and obliterate our planet, but such collisions in the form of cosmic rays have been occurring on Earth and other planets for a long time. In fact these collisions pack much more of a punch than anything the LHC can produce. However, this hasn’t stopped people from trying to stop the project.

MIT professor and Nobel Prize winning physicist Frank Wilczek is just one of the scientists who has received death threats in the past days, according to the Telegraph UK.

But for anyone who’s thinks the LHC will end the world, Professor Brian Cox of Manchester University said, “Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a t***.â€
