Water storage...anyone tried these?

Post by manowar » Tue Feb 17, 2004 8:25 pm

I found these water storage bags (30 - 300 gallon capacity) and was wondering if anyone has tried them out? I used the 2.5 gallon bricks last year and they all compacted up nicely at the end of the week with a little duct tape that is, but these seem like a great idea if they work and the you don't mind the price.

man, those things look awesome... i was gonna pay about $300 for a 60 hard plastic water tank, but for 1/3rd the price, i can get 110 gallons... hope they stand up to the playa, and everything else... did you have any problems with these, like leaks, or bad tasting water or anything?

They look great, however, because of their design I'm guessing that you would have to place them in the back of a truck or something and then fill them with water and then leave them there until you emptied most of the water out. They don't look very moveable (much like a water bed matress).

l would just like to point out that water weighs 8 pounds per gallon. As Chia Guy points out, when you fill it, that is where it is going to stay.

It really does look like a small water bed.

this may sound stupid, but any thoughts as to sleeping on the bag? i mean, they show a fullsize chevy truck rolling on it, and im pretty sure i dont weigh that much.. was thinking also, about maybe builing a trailer for it... a 1/2 ton rear axle should be able to support 1000 lbs by itself... maybe a 2/4 ton axle, with a nice metal frame around it.. you could box it in... maybe even put some storage on top of it.. i have a longbed chevy, and that bag would prolly take up most of my storage space in it...

A couple of things to consider. The 150 gallon one at 8 pounds a gallon weighs 1200 pounds. The more water you use, the closer you butt gets to the truck bed, and eventually you will be sleeping on the truck bed. My biggest concern would be putting all my water in one bag. And add a frame work that the bag would rub against all the way to the playa? Do you roll around in your sleep?

I would put this system to a torture test at home before using it for real. This is what I am doing. I am a hardcore desert camper BUT I do it in the Mohave, not on an alkali desert like Black Rock. Normally for 2 to 3 days at a time. Also I can jump into my car and be in an area that has stores within 20 minutes to an hour round trip. None of this is available at Black Rock. I would just really hate to see you put in all the effort to get to Black Rock and have to leave because the bag sprang a leak while you where out having fun

i think i may just stick to the big hard plastic container.... takes up less space, and prolly a lil more fool proof..

Just a quick note:
waterbeds have heaters - on a cold playa night, a 100 gallon bag of un-heated water would suck the heat right out ot you, probably give you hypothermia.

The key board that is !

I have tryed this product before(storage bags )and have had mixed
results .Anything like a hot ember will go through it quit nicely.
Sharp pookie things as well.We had good results when not in
a place where people were not trying to see how tough it was!
A truck may be able to go over it but my 6yr old can make it have a nice water fall with a sharp stick!!!It take's a lot to melt the blue plastic one's .
I stick with the blue one's for fresh water and fill them back-up with gray water when empty.
Good luck!
