Heh, heh. Then we can all run around and have naked squirt gun fights. Kewl.thisisthatwhichis wrote:I think I'm gonna hand out water-paint filled squirt guns to the CT and CD riders this year......

Heh, heh, I said naked and squirt. Together!
Of course add in some rolling around on sheets to make prints.

I have a lot to loose from going to burning man. I have an ex husband that doesn't understand the festival and a daughter that I adore very much. His family already thinks I am irresponsible. Possibly because I am young and have kids :)
But if someone wants to take photos of my nude form more power to them. I don't really like having my picture taken but if someone feels like I am an artistic influence I don't want to curb that desire.
When i went in 06 I took my camera but we only took pictures of our friends, our camp, and art.
I am sure there is a problem with the frat boys and all of the drama that they bring with them but hopefully that will be curbed a bit this year with no ticket sales at the door.
Okay I am having a spastic though process right now so I should probably just quit writing since I never reread what I wrote.
BTW love the idea of a nude water-gun camp.

Spilling my heart
Hey Everyone,
I'm not worried about loosing my job or child. I'm also not worried about the image coming back to haunt me.
I just don't like having my photo taken w/o permission. I also don't like having my conversations recorded or my letters photocopied w/o my permission.
Just as our photographers feel they have a right to document their experience, I feel I have a right to attend and not be photographed, recorded, photocopied. It boils down to whose rights are more valid, mine or the photographers.
Can you empathize with me, or is it just too crazy?
If we should all really expect to be documented and recoreded I don't see why BM should even issue media tags, or not allow outside media.

Cameras
Great reading this thread! I love my pictures from 5 years of Burning Man. I believe I have really captured it... art nudity and all. I go to BM for the photo op. Yes...if you don't want your picture taken, don't be photo worthy.
I certainly don't want to take a picture of someone who doesn't want their picture taken. I also do not post them anywhere.
But...I also don't want to ask your permission to take your picture (shame on me) because that ends up with a "posed" picture (yuck).
Okay...I guess I'm an asshole but I sure like the results...
By the way, in all my picture taking there seems to be many more people that want to pose and are slightly exhibitionistic than seem to shun my camera. My girlfriend gets lots of camera attention at BM and LOVES it. Makes her feel very special (which she is). People taking her picture (both men and women), she says, validates all the effort she took to put her (very bare) costume together.
My 2 cents worth

Can I get an Amen! You can clearly tell the pictures where a person or two have been asked to pose.Moonpie wrote:But...I also don't want to ask your permission to take your picture (shame on me) because that ends up with a "posed" picture (yuck).
25ish hotties with cutesy costumes, probably animal or kitty themed, arms around each other, looking right at the camera, waving their cups o'booze in the air. Probably emitting a "whooo-OOO" that dogs can hear 50 miles away.

Allow all cameras, but confiscate all film and cards. Fire away!

This is perfect. In fact I would volunteer to ride shotgun camera-squirting duty for the CT ride. I'll even take off my top.. Eight or ten squirters toward the front of the ride, squirting away at anything resembling a frat-camera! Love it.

"Carry a squirtgun and get those cameras wet. Then toss some playa dust on them. If everyone fights like this then every photographer will start asking first."
PERFECT idea. We don't have a right to defend ourselves or stand up for ourselves in the default world without risking our liberty, livelihood, reputation etc.. In the United States you are supposed to ask a 3rd party for protection and retribution. Burning Man is the perfect place to practice asserting your rights directly. If someone takes your pic without permission and won't erase it, BREAK their camera.
Soak it, snap it in pieces, smash it.
'course you may need some mace on hand also, or a large blunt object to defend yourself with. But at least you've taken the steps to defend yourself and your personal space that the default world doesn't allow you to take.
Destroying someone's camera is perfectly acceptable if they won't erase the pics. They've violated your rights, and in turn you have violated theirs. I'm kind of a sociopath so I'd actually welcome and enjoy the opportunity.

That's not very hippyish now is it? JKtransgirl wrote:Soak it, snap it in pieces, smash it.
Actually, you could possibly get tossed out of BM for criminally damaging someone's property like breaking a camera. Take their media tag instead and head over to media mecca with it.
A note on photographers rights. If YOU are not the subject matter of the photo, YOU have no recourse. Say a photographer takes a picture of Buckingham fountain in Chicago. If you happen to be in that picture you are not the subject of that picture and have no model rights. If that same photographer zooms in on you standing in front of the fountain YOU become the subject matter of the day. If a photographer takes a picture of the whole parade, the parade is the subject matter, not necessairily the individuals in it. If the photographer zooms in on YOU or your girls then you are the subject matter and you have rights.
Breaking their property is not within your rights. Squirt guns, well, the photographer should read the back of their ticket. Hell, spit at them. Throw poo. But if you start a fight over a picture, you'll find someone else taking a picture of that. It's understandable that topless pictures seen in the default world can cause problems for some. However, a topless photo of you in a fight would be even worse.
Does CT have a banner at the begining of the parade. Did they ever think of doing that and adding NO PICTURES PLEASE? Just sayin.
Read my posts with a grain of salt.
Yeah I was thinking of portrait closeups as being offensive, rather than "scene" shots.
I'd still consider breaking someone's shit if they took a closeup without permission and refused to erase. But I am, admittedly, somewhat of a sociopath.
Water and dust, afterall, can't be great for a camera. So you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. I'd rather stand up for myself and teach someone a lesson on respect and risk getting thrown out.
'course, they'd have to catch me.
People have turned into whiny feeble kittens who are scared to assert their right to not be violated in an unjust system.

heh heh. My last post in my soapy thread will explain why I'm sensitive about getting my pic taken without permission.
It happens CONSTANTLY to me at BM. I'm just trying to enjoy the ride being who I am..
For some reason, photographers out there seem to think I'm doing me to get all the attention possible and dont mind the constant picture taking. Totally not true.

You are a beautiful human being Ms. Barbie.RedheadBarbie wrote:I will be attending for the first time this year. Of course I've been dreaming of it for years and finally plunked down the cash and will be eating mac and cheese for the next few months to make it happen. I am originally a painter. I live to paint but due to school and all of those other pesky life situations don't have much time for it. I'm lucky to finish one piece a year.
My partner was born with a camera in his hand. He introduced it to me and I found it to be a great substiture for my lost paint. We now have taken over 300,000 pictures together. We have spent more on gear in one year than I spent on my lifetime of paint. We earn less than $2,000 a year for our photography. We regularly contribute to newspapers and document our community. We regularly photograph concerts and provide the pictures to the bands for free.
I will be taking pictures. And I may not always be able to go ask every person in the range of my shot if they mind. I will respect you if you ask me not to take your picture. I will delete it if I have. I will have cards on me so you can contact me and get any pictures of yourself.
I will be topless or nude as much as possible, and I expect to be photographed while there. It's just a fact, nude or not. I regularly pose as an artist's model. I can't control how they make me look. It is their art, just as photographers control the camera. But then again I can't stop a person from seeing me nude on the playa and drawing their impression of me later.
Photography is an art. It captures the beauty of the moment. It allows you to open up and be who you really are and capture it for that one brief moment, who you are before the next day's worth of activities have altered your personality just a little bit, before you meet that next person to have an impact on you, before you age and mature a little more.
My point is that to restrict one form of art would defeat the purpose of allowing such a great place for open expression. If you are anti-camera ask yourself why, make peace with it, and embrace the art. Or think the way you do and do what you will, close the mind, that's our America, but not the one I dream of.
I just discovered this thread today and I've decided that I need to meet you and your beau. (We'll be serving tea on Tuesday at the Bomb Bay Tea Co. Drop by, it'll be a hoot)
The Missus and I list photography among our talents though we take remarkably few photos at the event and allways with permission if'n it's personal. We are usually to busy participating. I will say this though, I do treasure the photos we have taken. Memory is a fickle thing and one does not always remember things that end up being important later without a jog to the old brain pan.
I couldn't really give a flying fuck what folks do with photos of me, unless there is money involved and then I want my cut. I'm not running for public office or involved in any custody battles and hope never to do either. The human form is quite possibly the most wonderous thing ever beheld in my book and admiration of it is a worldwide past-time. Folks that need to be left alone should seek festivals of less than 40,000 people.
As a former student of anthropology and archeology I bless many of the photographers that chronicle the event. I challenge any resident of BRC to show me an asshole free city of tens of thousands though. Don't let them ruin the experience. They haven't for me. Remember, You can always find fun somewhere else.

Jesus are all of you people on the pay roll of fox news or something. Dude starts a thread calling for the head of the brutal dictator and it turns into a conversation on the intricacies of playa photo etiquette. I personally think its high time that something was done to make the borg at least partially accountable to the citizens of Black Rock. If for no other reason than the example it would set. I mean even the most totalitarian governments in the world have fake elections and I'm sick of hearing shit like "well if you don't like the way they do things just don't buy a ticket" sounds just like "if you don't like it then you can jus git out". BRC is made by and therefore belongs to all of its participants they deserve some kind of say in its government and policies if only for the sake of setting a good example. Call me naive but I used to think that BM was some kind of common home for the counter culture. A capital for all things revolutionary and weird, some kind of light for the rest of the world to follow but its starting to seem more like a really weird country club for burner hipsters and complacent suburbanites with nothing else to be a part of.
