I particularly liked the dust devils picking up embers from the temple burn and throwing them into the crowd! there was a river of embers flowing horizontaly into the crowd, we sat on the front row 50 feet from where it entered the crowd.

I thought this thread was going to be about how we should incinerate cordless hand-held vacuum cleaners.

I'm so disappointed.

All dust devils should be herded into the fire and burned.

Remember that scene in "Poltergeist" when the scientists playback the recording of the light moving out of the closet... and it turns out not to be just light but rather lost, trapped souls (in fedoras and pearls) wandering around, looking for the "bright light" so they could move on?

It was like that.
Irony. You're soaking in it.

I missed the temple the first year I was on the playa 'cause I wasn't ready for IT...

The Paiute and other tribes in the region refer to these dust devils as Ancestors. It's interesting that the reference you used reflects that.

re: Ancestors.

Remembering that night again, I can see why. What's hard to tell from AntiM's photos is just how orderly the dust devils came out of the main fire.

One would appear, then slowly move away from the fire, then a few seconds later, another would appear and follow suit. It looked like the line at Customs! One after another, measured and patient.

Maybe a meteorologist can explain why this was so...

Most dust-devils sneak in without buying a ticket.

Here's some pictures of an immense dust devil from 06. For reference of size, the cyclone is passing over the Man in these pictures.
