I offered the VOIP over and over again. I really dont think that will work.
it would be nice to have something that was eplaya, tribe and youtube combined.
i've been working on it but it is hard to do these things by myself.
Especially with the standards I would like to use.

Hey if I can find the time I'd help you with the video part anyway. We could have strip poker contests & such on live video and give the proceeds to Burner Without Borders.....

It was a very, very sad day when Tribe.net officially died on January 19th, 2006.
The only reason I remember the exact date is because we had a local "tribe party" hosted by a group on there called Tribe Sluts.
logged on in the AM and....poof.
It just hasn't been the same since. I can't believe how glitchy it's gotten.
I miss the days when Tribe actually worked.

Well all I have to say is Technopatra, Spanky and Ra did the right thing when waaay back in the day they choose the right thing to do when it was time to make the change with eplaya.
These days, whoever is the ETF, I think Dork is a part of that, has been doing a great job keeping eplaya alive and looking better than tribe.
I would still like to see eplaya better. It's possible and not too hard to do to take tribes place.

Hey, didn't Cisco buy tribe? You'd think with all those high end servers they'd get their shit together, but it seems like they took a great thing and brought it to the suckamondo level.....

It only limps along because people keep using it as is. The management seems to have bought the "if it's not broke don't fix it" mindset and taken it to the extreme and the site's been cherry picked months ago. And why not...there's no alternative, no competition. Well..it sounds like there could be some but someone is dropping teasers about a project that sounds great...but at this rate it will beat Wine's record of staying in beta form for 16 years....
That's a long winded nice way of saying either offer a link to a beta test of this super cool site or quit teasing us with it DVD.....

I did already. It's a private site as I mentioned, that part I have no control over. I offered an invite as I always do anytime I set up a site.Kinetic V wrote:

I don't believe that. They, or at least Darren, really do seem to be working on it. It's very broken, true, but rewriting the code from the ground up isn't an insti-fix. When that's done--or if it isn't in a reasonable amount of time after the proposed July beta-testaing, then we can say that.Kinetic V wrote:The management seems to have bought the "if it's not broke don't fix it" mindset

what a piece of broken shit Tribe has become...down again today. A tribute to the business plan that goes like this...design something neat and people friendly and popular, sell it to a giant mega-corporation, then watch it devolve into something less.

Darren of Tribe.net wrote:So, today I basically got the go-ahead to go full speed ahead with the rewrite project. I have convinced management that I know how to scale Ruby on Rails, and with John Adams (one of our contractors) now working on twitter.com (one of my favorite websites which also happens to be 100% RoR) I should have a wealth of data coming back for the bleeding edge development we are doing.
I think you folks should get not only the most stable but the shiniest and the coolest toys to play with, since SOME of you are paying for it. Because of this, I've entered into talks with Sun and MySQL to run the next version of tribe.net on nothing but Sun Microsystems equipment with Enterprise level database support. We're also going to be using some bleeding edge technologies like computing clouds to make this as cost efficient as possible. I know this is probably wacky moon talk to more than a few of my friends and people reading it, but these are all good things.
Because of Sun's support for this project, I feel a lot more comfortable pushing the bleeding edge of what can be done. I'm also having fun looking at machines with four processors in them and 256 GB of RAM. That Sun product catalog is a lot like porn to me, except you can't get a PDF sticky. One of the things that I am particularly proud of is throwing tribe's gauntlet into the ring of making Ruby on Rails scalable. I'm not the brightest person on the planet, but it seems like this shouldn't be rocket science. We also have two interns working on Ruby on Rails and AJAX/UI code for us, and you'll probably be thanking them more than me for the minor tweaks that tribe.net has needed for a year or so now.
The new timeline goes a little like this:
Proof of concept (July 9th)
Beta test roll out (August 1st)
Tribe.net 3.0 rollout (September 1st)
Due to certain efficiencies in coding in Ruby on Rails, we may have the beta-test sooner rather than later. Paid subscribers will have the first whack at the new Tribe.net servers, as we're setting up the cluster specifically for them first. Once we have the bugs shaken out, we'll launch the site for all members.
In other words... ask Mark Pincus if you see him at Burning Man!

Uh-oh....
This whole idea of "fixing" Tribe looks like it's going to turn into a textbook case of how to kill off a great concept...death by a thousand fuckups.....
Unless these people have their heads buried in the sand or up someone else's ass they would know that Twitter is having serious scalability problems right now. It's become so bad that open source competitors are springing up and if Twitter doesn't get their act together they'll be joining the likes of Beenz and Pets.com.I have convinced management that I know how to scale Ruby on Rails, and with John Adams (one of our contractors) now working on twitter.com (one of my favorite websites which also happens to be 100% RoR) I should have a wealth of data coming back for the bleeding edge development we are doing.

Ya know. I got hooked on tribe when this board was down forSix Farking Weeks, without warning or explination. It's worth it to me to spend $5 and have those ads blocked and to feel I'm giving to something that matters to me. Although I am a member of various burning man tribes, I don't feel that I am primarily a burner. And since this is supported by the llc's money, at times I feel freeer to speak my mind on Tribe than here.Apollonaris Zeus wrote:What gets me riled up is that they make money from Burning man people. they charge for services and advertising when here is Eplaya working, free and no form of class system.

A lot of eplayans have made it very clear that they think Tribe users are retarded.theCryptofishist wrote:Ya know. In my efforts to use eplaya I've been "plonked" by several users and basically told I have no value here. I rarely log in as a result.
