RV fishing... help needed

Post by paradox » Sat Jun 07, 2008 4:36 am

Friends and Aliens,

Last year was so fantastic that we're coming over again (me and the wife). We're flying in from Israel and landing in SF to meet friends and family. After tenting last year and being newly-weds this year, we decided to go for it RV-style this time. Planning on being inside it the least we can and being out on the playa most of the time - don't wanna be detached from the burn hiding away in some AC.
Anyway, been looking to rent an RV and prices are just too much. Had some tips from ppl here that it's better to buy a used one and sell it after the burn. Financialy - that's perfectly right. Problem is that we live in Israel and won't stay long enough after the burn in order to sell it.
I'm trying to find some RV dealer in or near SF for this kind of deal, but I'm also offering this deal to anyone who feels like it -
If anyone can find us a used RV to buy in SF area (up to 4000$-5000$) and can sell it after the burn (also in SF after we drive back) - I'd be happy to give up some of the selling money to that someone. Hell, take it for a month of joy-rides after the burn and then sell it for all I care.
This is a way for me to save some money and help a fellow burner to make some money. Just have to trust my luck and karma to find someone trustworthy and cool...
Ideas? Tips? Connections?

check Craigslist..
I've been seeing some pretty clean, older RV's under 8K, some even under 4K..........you might use the "crazedlist.org" RSS feed site, so you can search a larger area all at once........
I may end up "surplusing" my 24' trailer.......I may have found another I want more.
But, you'd need someone to pull it.

I know renting is expensive, but...

Post by sensi63 » Sat Jun 07, 2008 11:48 am

When you rent, you are getting an RV that is relatively new and well maintained. Do you really want to fly all the way from Israel and hassle with buying and RV, and then risk it breaking down on the way to BRC? That would be a bummer. Then you have to sell the thing again when you are done, vs just cleaning and returning it at the end of the burn.
Having said that, if you are going to buy, there are a number of relatively cheap RVs on sfcraigslist right now, given the sky high price of gas and the ever worsening economy. It does suck that El Monte RV doubles their rates for the burn, but like I said, there is something to be said for the peace of mind that comes knowing that there is probably not a major mechanical flaw waiting for you when you turn off I 80 into the desert.
Good luck whatever you choose.

RV rental for BM is not simple anymore.
Comercial rentals are booked 6 month before the event.
Private rentals are hasitant to expose their huge investments to playa hazards.
Those who don't mind renting to burners want $3000 or more.
I found a few places (comercial) ha are renting for BM but they are very expensive and they charge $600 for cleaning.
I bet those are gone too.
My sugestion, if you flexible, just rent a minivan at airport and sleep in it. Bring a cheap camping tent to keep your things in it, so the van is empty
Plenty of space, AC, gas friendly, free milage, don't have to clean it (saves about a day of hard work), etc....

If you do plan to buy a used Rv, if you can, bring a mechanic or type person. If you can't find one, check the following:

Oil, is it Black Black!? feel it..is it gritty? may have problems.
Transmission fluid, if its a copperish color and smells like ozone, or metallic, also problems..
Electrical, Tires, etc...

It would suck to fly all the way out, and get stuck with a dead RV..and having to pay for a wrecker(not tow truck) to move it,, if its a larger sized RV. Good Luck!

get that Box Truck! And make it your own castle! Here's a link for furniture. Get some shag carpet..battery powered mood lights..or those cool candle lanterns, that come in all colors. As far as heat goes, should be able to haul enough water for a large in-truck kiddie pool! Swiss Army Inflatable beds are the BEST! While in S.F. go to a poster shop..buy some prints of fine art..you're set!!![/code]

We have a 31' RV and are looking for a few more folks to help us with cost. It's a rental. We usually sleep/store our gear in tents outside since the RV ends up not being a very private space...but we love the refrigerator, quick showers, cooking convenience. Anyone interested in details ping me at: dragonpilot38(at)hotmail(dot)com. Oh...we're traveling from Seattle Aug 23, returning Sept 1.

Four of us flying from ireland - we booked one around two weeks ago in vegas for $3000 which between four people is not that bad as thats about €500 each in local currency for the week.....

We really struggled to find a place that had one and we got lucky with a cancellation!

Fly into Vegas and rent from there. It's my understanding that Vegas area never sells out, and doesn't experience the rapid increase in price due to Burning Man. It's only an extra day's drive, and Vegas isn't a bad stop at all, regardless of where you're coming from.

In Vegas you might even get a better deal on the rental, when talking to the agent keep asking about and hammering them on the cost of fuel. Since RV's suck down fuel like there's no tomorrow, they're probably hurting for business (outside Burning Man, the US is suffering from a shit economy and skyrcketing fuel costs).

Hope that helps!

Firstly, who are you renting from? I have rented a few times and never any problems. One particular company has a Burning man release form you must sign stating that you have been upfront about attending the event and will return the vehicle in an expected manner of cleanliness. There are a few guidelines on the form. Nothing unreasonable. You can take the RV anywhere you want, just realize that the company may have restrictions on where they service (ie No Death Valley) and you are on the hook for a lot of coin, should you go where they have asked you not to and then call them for help in a breakdown. Did they tell you, you cannot take their RV to BM? Is the company CA or a smaller independent dealer?
