Theme camp for ginger people/Star Wars fans?

Post by TD-2441 » Wed Jun 25, 2008 9:07 am

Just wondered if anyone was doing this and catering for the fair-skinned Burners :D Being a redhead (auburn not ginger, mind!) it would be nice to find a group of people who I can sympathise with about having to wear Factor 50 sun lotion, swap after-sun creams with, and worry about melanomas

Gingers get a lot of flak by the mainstream media but we are actually the coolest people on the planet. Hands up for a Melanocortin-1 Theme Camp!!!!

Also would be cool to hook up with Star Wars geeks/sci fi fans in general? Anything to cater for this genre at BM? I'm hoping the Jawa Sandcrawler will make an appearance.....

Lordy I'm really selling myself here aren't I - ginger, and a scifi geek!!!

There was a sandcrawler out there last year...

I should think you won't have to worry about fitting in or getting teased about either covering up or using lots of sunscreen. Several of my campmates did just that last year, and we were neither alone nor doing anything special to attract fair-skinned/ginger/etc.

You may want to keep an eye out for the listings of camps that do sunscreen and camp nearby, or you may want to consider altering your sleep schedule (that may happen anyways). There's plenty going on at night, and it's perfectly acceptable to sleep during the hottest parts of the day. You'll be up at night when the sun's not an issue, and get plenty of daylight time in the late afternoon and early morning.

The Sandcrawler crew won't be bringing out the sandcrawler this year, unless someone decides to do differently between now and the event. Most of that crew will be camping with Gigsville this year (as they have in the past). Gigsville is mostly based out of So Cal and a little Nor Cal but a tiny bit many other placers. They generally aren't stereotypical "geeks" but there are quite a few of us that associate very well with that genre.

Math camp (aka group W) seemed to be a little more stereotypical "geek" to me, also Apocalyptika (sorry about the spelling) has some pretty good geek / "In SPACE!"ness going on. Show up early and all the engineers / mad scientists are building their crap. It may not be too late to help set up someones project. Later in the week, us geeks get drowned out by the partiers.

You shouldn't have trouble finding people there who you can talk to about starwars or other sci-fi nerdyness.

I'm not sure. I know they used to do a lot of "events" throughout the year but I haven't been following them recently.

We were next door to Watto's last year and they were great neighbors! I think they gave out over 10,000 light sabers. I still have mine here somewhere! Bunch of great folks! I think I recall that last year was the big fini for their concept though... hard to top what they did! Hope to see them all again! Watto's is not registered this year though, assuming all the registered camps are now posted.

I'm a fellow fairskinned redhead and have mastered keeping most of me covered from the sun over the years... also a desert rat so it goes with the territory. I'll almost always have a hat on out there and the dreaded morning sunscreen ritual is ingrained in me by now.
A plan is what you vary from.

Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

Sorry to hear about the sandcrawler crew not bringing the vehicle out... but seriously, I don't think you'll have to go very far to find someone who's a fan of Star Wars. If not all the films, at least the original trilogy has a pretty solid fanbase.

No Sandcrawler?? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Yeah I was pondering staying in the shade during the fiercest parts of the day and only going out and about in early mornings and then evenings. I'll be permenantly wearing a cowboy hat to protect my face and I will be bringing plenty bottles of Factor 40+ 8) 8)

Ya gotta love a slave Leia and a gent in proper ABS sunblock.
There was at least one land speeder in '04.
You'll find several sci-fi, firefly, steampunk and Star Wars
fans at the Bomb Bay Tea Company. We have shade too!
Swing by for a visit. I'll be serving tea on tuesday though that
by no means restricts you to that day alone. :)

There were a few great speeders last year, custom jobs from David Best and his crew.
