That's excellent! Every year right around this time I start wishing I could sew and/or assemble electrical components. Can't wait to see the finished project.

I like how you attached it with Velcro! I hate putting stuff like that together and then it's a pain to wash the item later.

Ya know, I haven't really thought too much about it this year due to all the disasterous sewing attempts of years past. Now I'll have to try and come up with a cool project to ask for advice on...

I am working on a light-up fleece cape. I had one without lights a few years ago and it was the best nighttime accessory ever. Bought a yard of this really thick soft fleece from Wal-mart for six bucks (it had lots of jesus stuff on it, so it was extra amusing) and really just cut a hole in the top to put my head through and attached some safety pins to tighten it as needed. It was cool looking sun protection when it was hot, and a perfect fucking blanket when it got cold. This year I need to step it up and weave some EL wire through, but I think I'm gonna order it pre-sautered and ready to go, and then it's just a matter of sewing it on with fishing line. Although I am quite open to any cool ideas anyone might have for said cape. I think I'm going with a cheesy patriotic design (which won't be hard to find at Wal-Mart) and maybe red, white, and blue el wire.

Louise and I appreciate the comments. "Tripping the light fantastic" is more like stumbling the light fantastic given my dance abilities, but that's a great reference.

I'll second that. Wouldn't work for el-wire, very cool with LEDs. Looks great.

Holy crap, phil, that's awesome! Did you get loose LED's and wire something together, or are those something more off-the-shelf? And do they each have their own power source (watch batteries, I'd assume), or do you have them connected to a single power source?

Hi, Trilo,

Louise made the whole shebang from scratch: wired the LEDs and resistors, soldered in one of those connectors for a 9V battery, then sewed velcro on a strip, taped the wiring and LEDs to the strip, velcro'd the pants, and stuck the battery in my pocket.

Beautiful work, and sounds like a great design. I've been tinkering around with design ideas for a jacket and some other pieces that will have built-in lighting effects. I hope to finally get around to making it by the fall.
