Anything new about communicating inside BM?

Post by Jane785 » Fri Jul 04, 2008 1:49 pm

Of course this topic has been discussed many times before - so no need to describe the whole situation --
-- just one simple question:
*Has anything changed compared to BM-2007?*
[maybe mobile coverage?]

there is full mobile coverage and high speed internet. you have to provide your own ethernet cable. don't forget it. they're very strict about that rule....
when you get to the playa visit the black rock public internet records library and soda lounge. bring all you need to get on line there. it is just behind large bike rack in center camp. you'll see it plain as day,....jane.

Double no and you would never want cell phones to work out there anyways. How fucking annoying would it be to hear cell phones on the Playa?!?!?

Those who are fully integrated members of the Pod communicate through their psychic emanations. One day, you, too, shall be absorbed.

well it should be known that jane786 is un-absorbable.
apparently she has absorbed almost no common knowledge and continues to post the most ignorant of questions therefor getting the brunt of my intolerance for stupidity and helping me fill my "asshole" quota.

sorry jane, you're probably very nice.....like a stump.

The year cell phones work out there is the year I think about not going. I fucking hate cell phones. Half the fun of Burning Man is not knowing what the hell is going on with the rest of the world, and not having to talk to anyone at work, school, or home. I remember the year that I learned about Hurricane Katrina after I got home... Glad I didn't know that was going on while I was on vacation.

I agree, however thankfully someone had access to communication during Katrina. People on the playa were preparing to help, while our government wasn't doing shit. The isolation is comforting though.

Yeah, I found out during Exodus. Made me feel really isolated, but kind of in a good way. It's weird knowing everyone in the country knows about something and you haven't heard a thing about it.

If we get cell phone reception at Burning Man, my phone stays home. If you try and walk past camp lines with your cell phone attached to your ear, I will break it. People on cell phones drive me fucking crazy in the real world, and I don't want to deal with them on the playa. Don't even get me started on the inconsiderate pricks who think it's okay to walk up to the cash register at a store while talking on their cell phones. If you're yappin at the store, it better be because you forgot what you were supposed to pick up and you just need to check really fast. Anything else can wait until you get home. And don't even think about picking that fucking thing up while you're driving.

Especially on the road! They get a call, pull in the slow lane..right in front of my tractor/trailer...and expect me to slow down as fast as they can. Cell phones have no place on the playa

I drive a semi truck carrying rocks while talking on my cell, bitching about people in cars that do stupid things in traffic right in front of me without realizing how close to becoming very very dead they are getting.
The cops talk on theirs while driving too.
It's like anti-gun assholes that blame the guns for crime; it's not the item, it's the people using them.
The problem is your common mindless moron that is paying more attention to the phone than to their driving. Most of these people don't pay enough attention to what's going on around them to start with, and reducing it more is catastrophic.
In the mean time, feel free to attempt to shove my phone up my ass and live to tell about it.

watched a kid crash his bike trying to pass me in the slow lane, as I was moving back into it.Wasn,t on a phone, but just proves people don't think when their on the road..compound that with a fucking cell phone. This kid died instantly..was scraping his brains and skull off my trailer. Cpt.Goddamnit, you ever get the feeling these people are throwing themselves at you?

I'm all for guns, but I'm still vehemiently anti-cell phones in cars. People are bad enough drivers already. They did a fun study on Mythbusters where they showed that talking on a cell phone impared your driving MORE than being just below legally drunk. You're handling a massive piece of machinery that has the potential to kill a lot of people... maybe pay attention to what you're doing. Oh god, and the people who text while driving should be beaten to a bloody pulp.

I would have an issue with people talking on cell phones at the shooting range while firing assault rifles as well.

My flaggers at my job site text while flagging traffic and nearly everyone that drives through is on their cell phone. Both make me just shade my head.

One year, I brought Family Band radios, hoping we could keep track of camp members.

Turned out we'd get "on-line" and hear some random wanker reciting Vogon poetry, or someone else saying: "Hello? Are you there?" over and over again. Then we'd finally get hooked up and my campmates would say, "Hey you gotta see this, some guy is shoving flames up his butt. It's easy to find, we're right by the drummers around a big fire!"

I only bring such devices now for entertainment.

They just enacted a law here in CA as of July 1st that says if you are under 18, you can't use a phone in the car, and if 18 or over, you have to use a hands-free headset.

I can't wait to see the first asshole getting a ticket for it.

screw spelling...I've seen several people pulled over for chatting on their phones. My job is driving..an especially good hide out for CHP is on descending on ramps. July 1st, my friend got a $20 ticket for talking on her cell. When you drive 10 hours a day on freeways, you see alot of shit..and Yes! they are enforcing the new law.

It's not spelling. It's grammar. ;)

Ah right. I forgot about the class A drivers. :)

Very VERY glad to hear they are giving out tickets for this. I wish they'd crack down on all the fucking Marinite dolts I get stuck behind on the way to work every morning.

I hear they're also going to outlaw those damn little dogs sitting in the driver's laps while driving.

If you read above a few posts, it's clear people don't pay attention..This guy was lucky I guess..he died instantly. Drives me nuts how fucking stupid people are on the road. I wonder what fucking genius proposed putting TV's in the front seat. Seems almost criminal.

About CB radios

Post by Marscrumbs » Tue Jul 08, 2008 10:49 am

I found some old Radio Shack CB radios and a set of walkie talkies. What's the CB culture like out on the playa. And what''s the story about 19?Emergency services?
