Sunglasses

Post by Prospero's Ghost » Sat Jul 05, 2008 1:12 pm

Hey there. 1st burn this year. I have a question about taking care of quality sunglasses. I know that everyone says not to bring anything that you value necessarily, but I have pretty damn sensitive eyes when it comes to the light. I used to live in Santa Fe so I know a bit of what to expect in terms of desert and the sun.

What would some of you veterans suggest that I do to take care of my shades while there? Not having been there before I don't know if this is realistic or not. If I keep them on a cord around my neck during the day, a case during possible (probable) dust storms, and back in the tent at night be enough? I am going to bring a pair of goggles as well but I assume that my shades will be the norm.

Thanks guys. Can't wait. See you soon.

Buy a second pair and throw it in the glove box in the packaging it came in. When the first one gets broken use the second one. If you don't break or loose the first one you can return the second one. Bring extra of what you normally use to clean them and be ready to relegate the used ones to backup status after the burn.

Don't set them on the ground to play 4 square!

The issue isn't so much the desert as the dust. Very fine powder. It may scour your lenses. Have back ups, see how it goes. You _probably_ will not damage the lenses, but you should be prepared just in case.

Not taking anything you're not prepared to have damaged is good advice. You probably won't have it damaged, but the possibility is very real.

I have wrecked two pair of the expensive glasses out there. The dust when mixed with any source of moisture will scour the lens. In my case it was sweat from my own brow. I had no choice but to wipe them on the spot and there is was, scratched lens.

I no longer bring expensive eyewear to BM. I bring 3 pair of cheap glasses that are completely disposable with no regret.

I have found the collection from Maximum Eyewear to have decent optical performance for not much $$. I rarely spend more than $15 per pair.

Bring them for driving, but I'd hit the sports shoppe bargain bins for cheap glasses & ski goggles to wear on the playa.

....I, on the other hand, am a clean lense freak. I don't skimp on eye protection. That being said, my glasses aren't the 'most' expensive but they are $135 Smiths with the polarized bronze mirrored lens. My eyes thank me. I only have two, but they're the only ones I have.

interchangeable lenses. so if you do scratch'em you buy new ones.

I'm wearing mine today. they remained scratchless last year on the playa.

Mine are prescription, I wear them all the time out there. No problems yet.

I wear prescription glasses as well and I've never had any real problems. I don't really have the option of leaving them at home because if I do I won't be able to see. Just be careful in dust storms.

Thanks for the responses.
I want my eyes to be protected and yet I don't want to completely trash an expensive pair of sunglasses. It sounds like I should be all right if I am careful.

I haven't seen the Smith Optics before. I have a pair of Oakley's right now that are an absolute dream on my eyes.
