Recommend a tent

Post by JezebelinHell » Mon Jul 07, 2008 7:24 am

Hey, so I need a new tent this year. I don't want to go crazy on luxury, but I also don't want my tent collapsing, leaking, or not having room to sleep in. I'm looking at a few Sierra Designs models, and I will be finding a better deal than they have on their website, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. If I want to spend the big bucks I'm definitely going with the Moken 4:

And if I want to spend a little less I'm going with the Bedouin 4:

I guess what I'm wondering is if anyone knows of a good sized tent that would be available at my local, soul-less big box store, that would be comparable to one of these beauties. I especially love the Moken, but I guess I'm willing to go with something a little less awesome if it's playa tested and approved.

I'd suggest looking at the 3 or 4 threads on tents visible in the page of threads and see if anything speaks to you. You may want to give a little more information: is standing headroom required? what's your max budget? is weight a factor? I assume you're in Reno, so you won't be flying in?

What are your needs in a tent aside from it standing up to playa winds and such?

You've got a ton of experts here who will tell you what works for them, and then you'll have to figure out what will work for you.

Yeah, I looked at all of those first, but all I'm seeing are tents that I would need to order online. I'm specifically looking for something that would be available somewhere like Wal-Mart or Target as a provision in case I don't have the budget in time to order what I really want.

So far as tent features goes, I want something that won't leak, won't blow down, and will fit two people and their stuff comfortably, which from my experience means a 4 person tent.

Cabelas has a retail store in Reno (well Verdi: 8650 Boomtown Road
Verdi, NV 89439)

The Kodiak Canvas I have posted about is available from them. Anything that is in their catalog or website can be picked up in the store. If they do not have it in stock, they will order it to the location with no shipping charges.

I would suggest a trip there anyway because their basic floor model tents will probably be better than the best Wal Mart or Target has to offer. This also means you can see and "interact" with tents they sell in life size. They are also hard to beat inventory wise for everything you need for creature comforts in camp.

OH! Their bargin cave can also be worth the trip all by itself. I saw lots of tents and related gear in there on my last trip. For a tent, you'll need to open it up make sur eits all there, but you can get a great deal this way.

I received the 10 X 10 Kodiak, and it is built like a tank, a canvas tank anyway. It also weighs about as much as a tank, but it goes up quicker than my trusty REI 2 man dome. It looks like it will be a dandy refuge from the dust storms.

Hey Tent Seeker,

I got Lucky, when my new Sears small 4 person tent had a break on a pole, I returned it post playa, got my $50 credit, and saw a HUGE 8 person tent.

I made the decision, If you are Hiking, then one needs a small tent to back pack with, However, if one is Car Camping, then get the Biggest Muther you can handle.

this tent is So big, it can have Two Queen beds inside, and still have room for lots of stuff, Coolers, Etc....

Also, it was a return so , the price was slashed and didn't cost me a Cent over my previous return.

Lesson is check the Sears Hardware dept. and look for the returns at a discounted rate.

Also Ask Friends and family for that tent that no longer gets any use.

My .02

Yeah, I haven't actually been out to Cabela's yet. I work for an outdoor supplier, but we don't do tents at all. Maybe I'll swing out there this weekend. It's a bit of a trek though, so maybe I'll wait till I have some scrill to actually pick something up.

You can preview most of Cabela's stuff online, should say what's catalog only and what's in the stores.
