Wheres the money go?
Okay so I think the whole idea of Burning Man is pretty cool. Work together, make art, love life etc etc. I also like the idea of self reliance and the lack of port-o-potties, over priced food stands etc etc.
I was just curious about where all of the money from tickets is going? You can argue it is a small price to pay and perhaps it is but it is still a lot of money and I would like to know where my hard earned cash would be going. Is it sitting in some fat cats pocket or is it being put to good use?
I have never gone before and was curious about this. This is no attack but simply an honest question and a fair one as well.

I have seen the financial chart in years past, but it is not ready for the 2007 event yet according to the main site. There's far more expenses than what we see on the playa, and much I had never considered. I found it very interesting. I suppose you could go back a year or two and check it out.

Oh so they do have port-o-potties. I say dig a hole and be done with it!! I figured the state took a fat chunk of the pie but it still seemed kind of steep to me. I will try and find the said report and try to find peace with it somehowsputnik wrote:Port-o-potties is one place, watering the roads to keep the dust down, fees to federal, state and local governments is a huge chunk, infrastructure, salaries to the people who run the organization. Lots more, I'm sure. There's a report somewhere on the main site.
Is it difficult to sneak into Burning Man?

Honestly if I could sneak in without paying I would so if that fact makes me a shitty individual....well we all cant be saints now can we? Of course I would probably be the first to carry you to a medic if you passed out from heat exhaustion. I have a good heart but I am a cheap bastard, plus I was just curious. Also I was mostly joking when I asked about sneaking in so dont burn me on a stake just yet friend.

Re: Wheres the money go?
Hey Zoomorphic, when you go the first time, just be sure to bring lots of cash to pay those plentiful but overpriced vendors selling food, bottled water and Burning Man souvenirs. My favorite things are feathered boa's and bags of peanuts. With basically no infrastructure, I can see why you would imagine the price of the ticket is rather high. How much could it cost to maintain the 10 porta-potties at the event? Not that much!Zoomorphic wrote:Okay so I think the whole idea of Burning Man is pretty cool. Yes, Zoomorphic, what I think thirt33n is trying to say is read the first timers guide several times and prepare for your week in Black Rock City. It is nothing like you're imagining and you will leave a different (hopefully better) person than when you arrived. There is still time to get your ticket and attend this year. Hopefully we can all welcome you on the playa!thirt33n wrote:zoomorphic magmorphicus idioticus stoopidicus trollicus fukofikus

Insurance.
Lawyers.
Fireworks.
Medical contract.
Fire fighting contract.
The servers we are using right this second on eplaya.
If you're there for the entire week it's less than $35 a day. A bargain when compared to many other vacations.

Exactly. I figured someone might be being rather greedy but I suppose I am satisfied with the information I have gathered here. Also I am a real person and I am not too sure what a troll is, must be nerdy forum slang or somethinghsdavis wrote:Hey Zoomorphic, when you go the first time, just be sure to bring lots of cash to pay those plentiful but overpriced vendors selling food, bottled water and Burning Man souvenirs. An Internet Troll is someone who deliberately posts inflamatory topics on a bill board or social networking site in order to enjoy the fireworks or make people look foolish or press some sort of agenda. "Troll" also has a verbform. This venue is rather prone to trolls, so we tend to jump hard on ambiguous cases.

Very air tight answer, thank you. That's great until you step into some tweaker's shit because he decided not to dig that hole. IE, "Saturday night at Burning Man."
Above and beyond that, imagine tens out thousands of people digging holes and shitting in them in the hot sun every day for a week. Of course, the very act of digging a hole in the playa is not what most people would consider simple.
That's chain-gang work, which is why you don't want to get caught sneaking in.

Good points. Chain-gang work? Hardly but still too many holes filled with poo at one time would be bad.

Not so easy to dig holes in the hard playa surface. If I happen to see you frantically struggling with a shovel and an urgent look in your eye I'll try and help you to the porta potties nearby.
Sneaking in ain't possible... the perimeter folk have awesome gadgetry, nightvision, fast-moving vehicles, wireless radios, newfangled contraptions of all sorts... believe me, once you've been there, you will never regret having spent the money. I don't make much money at all and I've never been out there cursing myself for spending a few hundred bucks.

Ahhh... "overpriced food."
Clearly, you're a return burner who is disgusted by the rampant commercialism out on the playa.
I'm deeply offended by the prices charged at all the food stalls too! $7 for a burner-dog?! That's totally unacceptable.
I'm also tired of spending $3 per gallon for water delivery and $2 per bag of MOOP disposal.
I think we should form a protest group and demand cheaper and better infrastructure services from these asshole/profiteering BM organizers.
WTF! We blow nearly $250 and have to SUFFER the indignity of dust, no A/C, and have to haul our own poop out?!
You should file a civil suit in Nevada to redress your grievances. I'll be right behind you.. honest.
P.S. - Do us all a favor and find an excuse for not attending this year, k?

I have to confirm what TomServo stated that Perimeter did indeed aquire some .50 cals, in early 2007.
Barret .50 to be exact, Great weapon,
I recal an incident at BM 07 on the Thursday before the man burnt, Tommy Tweaker was sneaking onto the playa from the north, The Perimeter dude (Steely Seal ) got off a 900 meter shot and hit poor old Tommy in the hand, as he was keeping the sun out of his eyes. Steely was aiming for his forehead but over compensated for the curvature of the Earth and shot a little high.
Unfortunately for Tommy the velocity and impact of a half inch piece of lead travelling at boo koo FPS went through his hand at such a high speed that the force actually seperated his arm from his torso at the armpit.
Totally fucking awsome to watch, It impressed the shit out of me. The last I seen tommy he was walking in Circles looking for his arm just as the dust storm started and we lost sight of him.
Moral to the story, If your going to sneak in. do what everyone elso does, Make up a harness and strap yourself to the underside of the Hippie School Bus.
Happy Burn.
