Rainbow Gatherings

I walked into a concert in dc once carrying a four foot longsword.
(You may be unaware, but they have some sort of weapons restrictions there.)
One security guard says to the other, "Can he do that?"
The other guy says, "You tell him."
I won't even try to describe what my date from bc was wearing, but it included buccaneer boots to the crotch, mail, a silk cape, numerous weapons and that bc anarchist attitude.

I hear everyone in norcal is a hippie anyway...
Are you too scared to take it?
Be one with your hippy self. One love! Namaste or some shit.
A long sword?buccaneer boots? Chaine maille?
Do you play "World of War Craft" too?
Oh god.
Someone recently told me world of warcraft is some sort of game.
I had never heard of it until eplaya.
My weapons are real, not props.
Like an unloaded rifle, if they weren't real, they would just be sticks.
I suppose the 60 mm black powder cannon and fire cannon and explosives all count as a game of sorts.
Just not a dull one.
The only game on my computer is that burning man game I tried to download and can never get to work.
Why have you heard of world of warcraft?

Hello! Weapons ban/weapons, get it?
It was all much more elaborate.
She looked hot.
And her weapons were real too.
I'm not too inhibited to wear a costume to a party when I feel like it.
I rarely do at burning man though.
I haven't got one fucking picture either.
That still pisses me off!
Listening to Queen Jane Approximately now too.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

Ah, maybe that explains the whole burner, "list of folk who suck," thing. If you're a frat boy, shirt cocker, hippie, spectator, or consumer who drives too fast, asks for sex, or plays world of warcraft you must be worthy of scorn and derision, in many burners behavior sets. This whole time I thought it was because us burners tended to be drunks hiding our insecurities under belligerence. But now I get it, we're flirting!Sensei wrote:...
No way, R.G. I'm pretty sure they're flirting.
That makes so much sense, Sensei. Thank you for the insight on this Friday morning. :)

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
It's easy.
There's nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be in time
It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
There's nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.
It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
All you need is love (all together now)
All you need is love (everybody)
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.

FOXTROT. UNIFORM. CHARLIE. KILO.
i'm sorry i started this little war of the alternatives.
but i stand by my critique, and quite frankly, rainbow gathering are pathetic and ill-fated in my opinion.
it is my OPINION....and most likely will not be modified by this discussion as i have been there, done that, dont want to do it again for the various reasons listed above.
with that said, let them freakify whatever they want....live and let live.
just dont bring that shit to the desert.

Wow.
Missed that.
Too distracted by the cartoon.
Good one, by the way.
So, what's your reference?
Is the person who is into games out of touch?
Or is that considered reality?
I actually went to the last gathering on a whim, after someone posted something on eplaya making fun of them.
I thought I might want to see for myself and then form an opinion.
I may have been fortunate in camping with some of the hardcore contingent that comes weeks before and weeks after to work.
There is a big difference between those who do that and the folks that don't.
I think my campmates were dismayed that I only stayed a week.
Fucking rain forest conditions were killing me.
They are some determined motherfuckers to take that for months.
As I've said before, I also saw the contempt my ride out had for the real do-nothings there.
He was impressed that I was happy to give him gas money.
He expected people to at least try to help out.
The other people asking him for rides weren't.
He told them to go fuck themselves.
I think he would have given them a ride if they had made any effort at all.
He was effectively an orphan and moving across the country on the way.
He had found something very important to himself there.
But he did not associate himself with the wandering bliss seekers.
Total contempt for what he regarded as outsiders.
Fyi, there have been many communes that have survived for hundreds of years, in the us and elsewhere.
I won't attempt to address the dynamics.
Living in a failed city, I find it hard to prejudge other's attempts.
As for leo interaction, they certainly urge everyone to avoid confrontation.
Everything I saw, was abuse by police, etc.
In recent stories, if you weren't there, how can you claim to know what happened?
It is well documented that the authorities are practicing deception.
In my own separate interactions, I have had completely false stories given to the media.
In fact, multiple contradictory and disprovable stories, so I would never believe any story from official sources regarding burners or rainbows.
I remember all too well the horseshit spread about burning man directly from the police in interviews.
Nevada can kiss my ass.
If the burn is moved elsewhere off federal land, I am ready to go.
I still haven't heard a halfway cogent definition of a hippie, so I have nothing to really respond to there.
I tend to think of the diggers who had no profit motives, as being the last of the actual hippies.
They were the ones doing all the hard work in the Haight, without real benefit to themselves.
That would be my definition.
I wonder if they had any influence on the mythical Harvey starting a gift economy?
It's sort of a hippie thing to participate in, especially if you work to make it happen.
First off, I do not trust the media. However, I have gone to two gatherings and witnessed all of the behavior mentioned routinely occurring during the gathering. I've seen the antagonistic heckling of rangers, fires being set in places they shouldn't, hippies bathing in protected in protected salmon habits and so forth. Many of the people that go out there go out there with no food or water. They expect the kitchens to feed and supply them with essentials. You can watch the videos on UTUBE of the last gathering of some of the behaviors I have also mentioned. Videos seem to be shot by people that are for and about the rainbow gathering and not by people who are anti-rainbows. I do not know how much more proof I can supply short of going out and doing a documentary. Yes, I'm sure there are good people there that do not do any of the things that I have mentioned. However, they are outnumbered.
Also, I find it interesting that they try to separate people who drink and people who do hard drugs from the main circle. I know they are trying to keep the peace. However, they allow psychedelics and pot. I'm sure that I am not the only who has seen some pretty out of control and insane reactions to psychedelics especially coupled with some one who already has a mental disorder. One of the years that I was there a man was arrested in the main circle for attacking a woman and her dog with an ax during a psychedelic episode.
I don't have issues with REAL hippies. It's the neo-patchouli hippies that subscribe to the subculture. I'm not into free loading and being high all the time. I'm not into listening to unsolicited spiritual advice. I don't want to hold anyones hand. I don't care for the holier than thou attitude. I'm not into listening to people harp about the problems in the world and yet they are too damn lazy to do anything about it. It's the hippie hypocrite complex.
Yes, I believe people should have the right to gather peacefully wherever they want. Yes, I hate rainbow gatherings and that's why I don't attend. Do I really care that much that they occur? No. Someone asked about rainbow gathering experiences and I shared my experience and my knowledge of the event. I'm not saying that Burning Man doesn't have any parallels with the event. I understand that the gathering is an unorganized event and it's going to have many glitches because of that fact.
The hippy and "WOW" comments where merely jokes. I jest, really. I'm not that serious about anything except comic relief.

I was pretty bemused by the alcohol thing, but it did seem the people in that area were all really serious hardcore drinkers.
There were people in my camp that were drinking beer at sane levels.
It was an interesting point of view, as I was around a lot of policy discussions and privy to some things not generally heard about.
Sort of the dpw/admin group.
I was stunned by how rugged it was for most people, especially the people showing up unprepared.
It was as much as a six mile walk carrying your gear, since the cops had illegally blocked off the roads as part of the harassment.
I am told it was an unusually tough site.
They are kind of agog when you tell them burners park in camp.
Most people did seem to be vegetarian.
Some disapproval at my cooking veal there.
A lot of variety, from a circus troupe that goes to burning man to a high tech camper with hidef, netweb and surround sound.
Lots of very opinionated political discussions in my camp, very coffee house sort of atmosphere, not much blissed out stuff.
I liked the kittens and roosters people brought.
That Polish cock was a loud motherfucker.
Really cute.
I never thought I'd like a rooster, but that feathered crest was interesting and this one may have been of unusually good disposition.

Do you think it was a mistake to go without using drugs, incl alcohol?

I didn't use drugs there and don't really use at all in general. Maybe, it was a mistake. I think I'd have to be on something to enjoy that place. I did have a couples beers though one night and was berated for that. I think taking anything there might just enhance my dislike.gyre wrote:I was pretty bemused by the alcohol thing, but it did seem the people in that area were all really serious hardcore drinkers.

I'm one of those people that goes to burning man and doesn't drink hardly ever and out of the nine years I have gone I have only done "stuff" 3 or so times. I'm easily entertained and I don't think BM needs to be enhanced much more.
The other two gatherings I went to were also pretty rugged but definitely not a six mile hike more like 2 or 3 at most, but yeah, it is hard to bring anything in with some of the hiking conditions.
I remember eating and drinking water there one day and someone came to lecture me how I was screwing up my chakras or some crap for having my beverage with the meal. It didn't go over really well with me.
I'm not religious by any means but I did find the hare kirshna punk rock camp to be my biggest venue for entertainment. It was fun to watch the Kirsha's mosh and yell "HARE HARE KRISHNA RAMMA RAMMA!" over and over to punk or metal.

You can check preview to see if it is working.
Interesting.
I didn't think anyone who went to burning man was easily entertained.
I thought that was how you got there.
Every year I walk out in the middle of the art cars and all the big art and fire and lights of the city and spread my arms to the sky and proclaim,
Look at how much it takes to bore me!
Ha. Thanks for the chuckle and the pretty colors.
You know, I always seem to find those people that are easily bored. They always wonder into my camp looking for a little of this or a little of that. Ya know cause it's their first burn and it just isn't exciting enough. They are usually pretty young. I figure they are legit or maybe cops. Either way I give them a mouthful of whats on my mind. I'm all about self-expression and I sure have a lot to express!

LOVE YOUR FUCKEN BROTHER!! heheh daaang kid.
hey, lets get back on topic for just a sec...
for all WE know... some 'brother' or 'sister' caught that old bearded hippie doing something very bad in kiddie camp.. and went to the cops, instead of alerting the 'Family Corrective Counseling Camp' (lulz@Timezone LaFontaine) and yeah... really, who knows how it went down.. but yeah angry hippies are nothing to scoff at.
Anyway, i'd like to know what the guy was charged with so if anyone has good info, or even bad info, please post links here.
and as far as Drainbows (i've had some bad exp w/ them) having a firearms ban, i'm pretty sure thay don't, not that hippies pack guns anyway, but yeah... rocks and sticks.. bad bad hippies!
i edited out that part of my post almost immeadatly after i posted, cause i didnt want this thread to go awry... thank you gyre. :P
i know enuf about rainbow gatherings to know that it's not my scene, been to one, that was enough... i sure would like to know what really happened with this particular incident.
please post links.

Yes, some of them carry firearms for sure. The first one that I went to one of our near by campers revealed to us that he was on methadone and due to run out in a few days. He also revealed that he had a gun on him. We took the gun from him immediately and he was pretty agreeable with that. He knew what was ahead. I had the clip & ammo and a friend took the gun. We were really glad that we did. The entire time we were there we watched him writhe around on the ground moaning, yelling and having come down fits. I think he eventually made it outside of the main circle to were the druggies congregate to get a fix. It was pretty bad. I wouldn't call him a rainbow but he was there and definitely caring a firearm on him.
If you're talking about the incident I referred to, there is a docko about it with interviews with the police, etc.
It said that everyone involved made arrangements to come back for all the hearings.
I think that's rare for witnesses from out of town in general.
The authorities credited them with the conviction.
I think it was in Virginia or North Carolina.

'it's a miracle the hippies didnt start shooting back, but i doubt it has anything to do with a firearms ban'
watching those youtube vids... all those people jumping around and screaming like mad apes..
WTF?!
i just kinda want to know what happened.

I can burn anywhere.
I don't think Nevada really appreciates us.
And I remember the way the burn was treated early days.
I hear there are other places that would like us to come see them.
One thing that was nice about the regional was less police.
