All I see is a little red x.

Going to an event on private property, it was much more relaxed not having cops meandering all over the place.
I could live with that for burning man.

Hey, I'm not worried about the gate staff, i'm not planning on looking suspicious or seem like i have something to hide, but i need some more info on the 447 road, its not like i'm bringing in a kilo of crack and a jar full of heroin, no!. just some other reeeaaaalllll smelly stuff, has anyone or does anyone know more about how likelyhood of getting pulled over? or has anyone ever personaly got pulled over? should I pack certain things in a method prepared for the possibility of a k-9? the funny thing is people here are saying don't seem suspicious or look like a hippie or what not, but in reality I would think the stereotype of the people that go to burning man is general and I think would apply to any and everyone from the perspective of a law enforcer parked on the side of the road. Just don't want to get pulled over right before we get there and get fucked over with a fat 600$-1000$ ticket and have to drive all the way back to that county to pay it. I understand you must be discreet and will do so on the playa, but if anyones ever been pulled over by a cop and searched with out question or probable cause you'll know where i'm coming from. Thanks for your help.

When you see a speed reduction sign start slowing down, be at or under speed when the front of your car passes the sign. Do not speed up until after you pass the sign for speed increase. 25 mph means 25, not 26.

There is a speed trap, wherein the locals have placed a 45 mph(?) sign next to a school, to get folks to start speeding up while passing the school. Both years 2006, 2007 I saw folks pulled over right there (Empire?). Don't go faster than the posted maximum speed, make sure all of your tail lights, blinkers, headlights work. Try not to look too much like a trustafarian packing in lots of weed.

Get a job and a haircut, and get off my lawn you bunch of punks!

Speeding wasn't a problem my first year... I got stuck behind some shitty bus on 447 that never broke above 23 mph. :(

Little Nixon is a speed trap too. Got pulled over in the bus I was driving my first year. Whoops.

Be NICE to the cops if you do get pulled over. The knife I had in the bus wasn't legal in NV, but they let me go and only took the knife instead of the massive fine I would of normally got.
And of course gave me the speeding ticket. ;)

Don't speed! The event isn't going anywhere and neither are the cows that like to sleep on the road. ;)

Challenge every ticket, every fine, and make it a nightmare in their little village. They see BM ingress and egress as an easy buck for thier cash strapped little villages.

While technically they are in the right to fine you for going 4 MPH over the limit, the intent of the law is to provide for safety, not income generaiton.

I suggest you request a hearing or at least a mitigation hearing and plead your case. File motions, request officers notebooks, etc.

If it costs the county as much to issue a ticket as they would get, you will see this trend end for 2009.

I thought about it, but I really was going too fast (10 over at that point I think). I'm more than willing to suck it up when I'm in the wrong. I paid my ticket over the phone and sinned no more. :)

I understand that, and appreciate your candor. I was speaking to the tickets that were / are issued for 3/4MPH, lights burned out, crossing center lines, weaving. etc.

the frivolous ones that are baseless and are issued in hopes of making a fast buck for their departments and jurisdictions

A few years back I had to drive into Reno to pick up my Wife mid-week.
I hit the road and set the cruise control right at 65.. I local sheriff flip around and stopped me just b-4 Gerlach. Radar had me at 65 in a 55 zone.. I told him he "had" me then.. He ended up giving me a written warning.
BTW he was wearing an olive green Kilt... Go figure... 8) 8) 8)

Does anybody else see this topic title and think it's going to be about the riddle you have to answer to enter into the event?

Some friends little four-banger RV broke down outside of Empire in 2005 and a K-9 patrol stopped to help them. I hear it got pretty sweaty in there.

The trooper was very helpful. The dog's window was rolled down and the RV door open, and if the cop would have wanted them, he had 'em. They said he seemed to avoid getting anywhere near the door of the RV.

They took a picture of the trooper as he was standing there shaking his head at a U-Haul driving by with the loading ramp still sticking out the back like a diving board.

They might not all be that friendly.

Some kind of LEO is assured to stop by if you pull over anywhere on 447 for more than a few minutes. If you look or act weird, expect to be asked questions. They may have a K9.

After you leave gate (and are IN black rock city) do not assume the party starts. They are watching you, and if you open a beer while driving (or anything more "special") expect to be pulled over and ticketed or worse. Wait until your vehicle is parked and will not be moved again before drinking or whatever.
With that being said....

Check all your lights on your car before you leave for the playa, make sure everything packed on your vehicle is safely secure and be tenacious about following traffic laws everywhere (especially through Wadsworth, Empire, Etc) There will be cops waiting on the side of the road in those areas so be precise about the speed limit.

It's a common misconception that all K-9 units are drug dogs. They aren't. Some are just simply "public order enforcement dogs." However, if they were pulled in or around Burning Man it may have well been a drug dog.

Dogs are notoriously unreliable.
Their sensitivity is the weakness.
I am told that capsacin and a few other things on a car will overload them.
I have not tested this.
They have been known to trigger on the cocaine residue on every single dollar bill in the country.

Being nice and courteous does go along way if are pulled over. Granted, it was off season but I was pulled over about years ago going to the ranch for going 30MPH in a 50 MPH zone over the speed limit and let go with a warning. I doubt they are that nice during the event and no, I don't recommend going 30MPH anytime around there. I was just having a lapse of stupidity.
