Glo Paint that is suspose to glow all night after 15 min of Sun Exposure.

Don't bother bringing your White Gas Coleman lanterns. They are a hassle with the gas, the pumping the mantles. Oye.
In stead, I got one one of those Coleman Fluorescent lanterns with the remote control. The remote is the size of a car alarm remote. It's great for activating your tent light before you enter, and can serve as a beacon as you stumble back home at 4:00 AM. "Now where was my tent?"
Also, for those newbies, who are campers, and know that florescent bulbs attract bugs. Don't worry. There are no bugs on the Playa, too hot / too cold / too dry.
Also. for personal lighting and biking needs.
THERE ARE NO STREETLAMPS, well a few torch style in the popular areas, but much of BRC is PITCH BLACK, so, you need to have light to see where you are going, especially on your bike, AND maybe more important, for inebriated folk to see you!
So, I recommend you pick up and LED Headlight from REI or Big 5. DON"T BOTHER WITH THE FLASHLIGHT BULB KIND. They will last 1 day on the playa. Also, decorate you bike with El Wire from

My latest Light Toy. The Mongoose has a VERY strong magnet in the fob, which is really handy for hands-free puttering with ducts, under cars or while photographing dusty autoclave pumps in a dark warehouse...(really!) But it's also strong enough to grab and pull out the blade of my pocketknife, which creates a few interesting problems. I really like having five flavors of light at my fingertips, although the little selection wheel is kinda fussy.
FATAL FLAW: The release clip is a clever design, but if you clip it to your pocket or belt and then brush against anything or lean on your car or sit down wrong it'll pop open and you've lost your new toy. I secured the two parts semipermanently with a dab of GOOP. The fob also has some very scratchy Velcro which I have yet to find useful and may even eventually remove. The bendy part of the fob makes it handy for adjusting while magnetized to a duct or clipped to your hat, and since it's flat it isn't very distracting or bulgy in your pocket.
I give it a solid "B" for design, and a Daily Carrier designation.

Here are some rules of thumb for Internet ordering.

I used that very kind on a few things and though it workd great at home it never glowed out there. Odd. If you wanna try em, make sure to try aqua color, it glows the best.

I tried it too. Painted a fanny pack and a my famous "Harp's Gigbag"
Here is what I learned.
1) It is best to use the paint on White surfaces / fabric etc.
2) The best glowing colors seem to be
Natural
Green
Aqua
and Pink
3) The playa does indeed cut down on glowability. Not sure why. But my fanny pack did glow very well in the pitch black of my tent. Perhaps if there was some way to "charge" the paint with a flashlight or something.
I wonder if the dust cuts down on light absorbing?

I brought about 100 Bright White & 100 R.G.B. LED keychains...everyone loved the RGB keychains.

I bought some of that glow in the dark paint.... tried it on my bike and on a dark blue velour top... I think it takes several thick layers of paint to overcome the Playa dust. Next time i will paint here at home and make sure the paint is plenty thick on the bike. Also, finishing with a clear coat probably will help.
The paint on my top~~white on a dark surface seemed to work ok; I had it on my back and my camp mates could see it. Maybe my body heat helped it stay activated.
Over all, I would not vote this as a favorite product.

Ambient nightlights on the playa is too much for glo-paint to compete. dim compared to el wire. Best when used in a very dark enviroment. Or back up safety lumination of things you can bump into.

Thanks for the link. I'm probably going to check out those multicoloured ones. If you buy 3 (or 5 or 10) of them you get progressively bigger discounts. And each comes with 7 lights, each having multiple colours and settings. Cheap enough to hang a large number off your outfit for the night and just be "the guy with a zillion little flashers". And/or give some away to friends etc.

I bought a bunch of blinkie rings from a great guy in Gerlach, gave those as gifts and also adorned my fingers with them in the evenings!

In case no one else has noticed, it's that wondrous time of year again! Christmas lights are in stock at your favorite chain outlet! Target, Walmart, Meijer, Rite Aid, and Walgreens are all confirmed retailers of solar- and battery-operated LED strands!

Now be good little consumers and spend, spend, spend! I bet we can single-handedly (er, 50,000-handedly?) buy our way out of this recession! If you're not out buying all the LED christmas lights you can find, well, I'm afraid to say the terrorists have won.

Costco has battery operated phasing LED snowflakes now (boxes of ten, individual flakes with batteries included), and solar phasing LED snowflakes on stakes.

Shopko has battery operated phasing LED eyeballs and skeletons. The eyeballs are better.

This is a trade magazine that is probably not very useful to the casual non-technical reader.

It seems that the largest and brightest display screens are still LED.
I found one that is 216 feet by 36 feet, visible from several miles.

been playing with this lately. I like putting it upside down on the floor or ground and it makes a nice pattern of lights on the ceiling. I used this under my shade shelter this last burn, and enjoyed the lights on both sides of the light colored nylon.

The 3-watt Brinkmann headlamps and torches are now down to $21 at my target.
I wonder when or if we'll see the new luxeon LEDs in that sort of thing?
I still haven't seen anything better for the price.

A friend of mine has started using lithium one use batteries for everything, as much for the lower weight as the stability.
That would be well worth the money on the playa in a headlamp.

Here's a bike perimeter light that Xtracycle carries.
The idea is to illuminate the bike and rider and area around the bike.
Not cheap but available with a recharging system.

Folks:

I have a complete home brew LED and HID lighting system for my bike that includes headlights, taillights, and decorative lighting so I can be seen and noticed.

I have a pdf file on my website (www.clearplastic.com) that shows how I assembled the system as well as how I put together my line of lighted clear vinyl raincoats that are great for cruising aound town on a rainy evening!
