Sunset shade- what compass azmuth?

Post by john408 » Sat Jul 12, 2008 5:29 pm

Ok, so this may seem a bit anal, but anyone who accidentally or on purpose positioned their camp front porch to catch the full shadow from their tent or RV in the afternoon, got a a nice gift. So let me ask the questions and hopefully someone knows this for BM08:
1. If you follow the 6:00 street what compass heading is it...pls specify from true north or magnetic north?
2. Again from (specify) true or magnetic north
a. Compass azimuth of the setting sun
b. Compass azimuth of the rising sun
c. Compass azimuth of the most prevalent wind (blowing from)

Thanks...Lovetoy, Silicon Village

6:00 orients southwest-northeast true north within a degree or two.

Afternoon wind is SW, reverses to NE early morning.

The sun sets at about 290 degrees, according to my compass. See this photo for a map of BRC that shows north:

This years map shows North to align between 4 o'clock and 4:30 o'clock radials. If you arrive before 7am, you can still see Polaris and line up your front door to North.

> 45 degrees from true magnetic North

John408, there's some confusion here. I think that "True North" is not "Magnetic North." True North and Magnetic North generally are not the same (there may be occasional exceptions where they align).

> Compass azimuth of the setting sun Ans: 290 degrees from true north

I think that compasses show Magnetic North, not True North.

God is not love. There is no god. There is, however, love. I hope I've made some small contribution to clearing up your confusion.

Compasses show true north if you compensate for the local magnetic declination, which changes from year to year and can be estimated here --
http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomagmodels/Declination.jsp
-- should be about 15 degrees E.

However, maps & site surveys are made by humans, not nature, so Burning Man's site plans, north arrows, and the as-built layout of BRC may not exactly resemble what you think you're seeing. So, bring a $20 compass and you can orient your camp as you see fit.

As close to BRC as I could get 119 14 28 W, 40 44 15 N
8/25/08
Sunrise AZ = +75 54' One fist width from due east towards the north
Sunset AZ =+ 279 30' One fist width from due west towards the south
True bearings so, Cub scouts set your declination correctly! 14 25' E (substract this from AZ calculation)

Thanks especially Chiefdanfox and Phil....don't know what I was thinking confusing true and magnetic
so to be boring...this is my summary

This is what I think from your replies ...thanks...please correct if I am wrong (again), fill in where you can.

1. If you follow the 6:00 street what compass heading is it...pls specify from true north or magnetic north? Ans: 6:00 street faces compass 45 degrees from magnetic North
2. Again from (specify) true or magnetic north
a. Compass azimuth of the setting sun Ans: 265 or 290 ??degrees from magnetic north- which?
b. Compass azimuth of the rising sun Ans: 61+ degrees from magnetic north
STILL WOULD LIKE BEST INPUT ON THIS:
c. Compass azimuth of the most prevalent wind (blowing from) Ans: ???

Thanks. Lovetoy

AGAIN, the arrow shown on the BRC map, as with all maps, is appx true north. 6:00 orients SW-NE, and the prevailing wind is appx SW.

Learn how to use a map & compass & the websites provided, please.

True North or magnetic North makes no difference since you do not know which will be used by the guy/gal running the survey team and implementing the city layout. So all this stuff here is us having a jolly time trying to make you actually think and figure this out on your own but you refuse to do so despite the valiant effort of many here.

So, to put it mildly, we have brought you to the water but it is up to you to drink, so to speak.

You also should know that we could be telling you all the wrong data, just to have even more fun. This is a cacophony event after all.

Just Sayin.

1. If you follow the 6:00 street what compass heading is it...pls specify from true north or magnetic north?

Ans: 6:00 street faces compass 0.785 Radians from North

2. Again from (specify) true or magnetic north
a. Compass azimuth of the setting sun

Ans: 4.974 Radians from North

b. Compass azimuth of the rising sun

Ans: 1.309 Radians from North

STILL WOULD LIKE BEST INPUT ON THIS:
c. Compass azimuth of the most prevalent wind (blowing from)

Ans: 3.142 to 3.927 Radians from North

And please be advised:
"That because of the increasing numbers of people
that have been sneaking into the event through the voids in the trash fence that lie between true north, grid north & magnetic north, it is now required for all attendees to be in possesion of a ticket in order to leave the event."
