I just want to cry. As a Black African American I am appalled, and insulted beyond belief, at the Cover of the New Yorker. To attack Obama with such an overt, misguided. This is no more funny than a portrait of McCain, photoshopped to look like Hitler.

Pours Rebbi and himself shots of Jack's. I assume you mean this:

I wonder whose eye they think they are poking with this? This is obviously an illustration of Rush Limbaugh & Co's nightmare of a black man in the whitehouse (other than as a flunkey). Is that supposed to make it funny to us oh-so-sophisticated ones? Barack Hussein Obama. Barack Hussein Obama. Our country's history poisons us.

(... she walks back into the bar from the JOTS out back, and sits back at the bar where she got up from 30 seconds before...)

Um... Damn. I seem to have misplaced my bottle of Makers, and the half-pint of Absinthe. It was here a moment...

uh...

um...

(Looks around. Notices some of the faces have changed...)

Hey Rebbi, Bin. That was fast. Hey, wait a minute... did we just do a shift change? That *was* fast... uh... what the...

(she then notices the walls are a different color. The furnishing has changed. The bar top has been refinished. Hell, the whole BACKBAR has been refinished. A new, freshly silvered mirror graces where the old, dust-tarnished one always was...)

OK guys, HOW did you do THAT? Cute!! Why couldn't you rebuild the Bunker that fast? What's wrong??.....

(Looks around again. Everyone has drawn strangely silent, and is staring at me. Like I'm a ghost or something. And... woah... everyone looks different - like they've gotten, I dunno, older or something. How wierd...)

Wait a minute. What's going on. What happened??

(Looks over to the calender on the wall... )

July... two thousand... EIGHT??!!

Looks over to the trapdoor leading to the tunnel to the bunker, which now has a stone fireplace built over the top of it... the crowd sowly edges to the other side of the bar...)

OK. WHO's playing games? What the hell?............... I KNOW I've only been gone a minute...

[Pours another round.]

Freedom of the press has its limits. Responsible Journalism frequently gets tossed out the window in favor of the owners/editors own political agenda. Omissions, additions and outright fabrications often slant the story.

As for Obama and McCain. each owes aliegence to the party they represent. And republicans and democrats are simply two sides of the same wooden nickle. Pretty worthless.

You make a good point, bb (and thanks for the round. I think I need it. I feel like somehting is different here...)

You see this becoming quite prevalent - the various news organs have ceased even an half-hearted attempt at being unbiased, and are now merely mouthpieces for whatever political agenda their oewnership wants to espouse. When you realize, further, it has ceased to be "news" and has instead become "entertainment", you realize the old news credo of "reporting the news, not becoming it" is not just dead, but dead and cold.

It's death knell was sounded when the movie and entertainment moguls bought out the news organs. Ever since then, it's pure propoganda. Why do you think our camp was so popular? We took what we were handed, which was the whole loss of information and speech to steer the minds of the masses - not unlike what powerful and overbearing givernments have done since there has been media to propogandize the proletariat - and flew with it.

What is sad is that people, rather than use the brains they were given and see thru it (or even better, remember the past - duhhh) they follow like sheep. We're a nation of sheep, maybe lemmings, who are willing to suborn our free will and rights and responsibility and determination to the will of those who by and large by far do NOT have the best interests of the same citizens (who they would prefer as subjects) in mind...

Because, damn, it's HARD to think, I'd rather fuck off and let someone else think for me. Why do something positive, that's WORK... I'd rather coast, let somoene ELSE make the decisions.

Here here!!!

(Downs shot of Makers, and fills a second...)

To those here...

(shoots down the semi-caustic liquid, refills the glass...)

and those absent...

(Again, tosses the shot back, and refills with the fine Kaintuck bourbon, hoisting the glass...)

and those yet to arrive...

(one more time into the breech, and refills yet again...)

And those who we long to see again.

(Slams shot, and shatters *her* shotglass in the fireplace...)

Good think I have the bottle, huh?? )grins(

So, it really *hasn't* been 30 seconds? It really *is* 2008? Wow... I like what you guys have done to the place...

... but who chose the institutional pale
green paint? I liked the booby pink better!

Same thing - resources. To control the resources a people need to survive is power.

Germany needed materials and food to feed its army and people, and Poland had material and land (and provided a buffer zone between the 2 powers who went together like Oil and Water). As long as it maintained control over said resources, fromt he fields of Poland tot he oil of the Caucausus, it had power, and could expand empirically. WHen it lost said control, its empire faltered, and eventually failed.

Bush needed Petroleum to keep the money flowing, and control over that to maintain some kind of world dominance in a world where our country is becoming both less dominant and less important. Of course, that he was able to increase the coffers of he and his under color of legitimacy heped a lot - it's easy when one can change the law to bury stuff deeper than Kennedy and Watergate combined to let the power be abused.

Also... he knew his days were numbered, and it may be the last chance ever to really rape the world for profit and gain, so you better do it NOW. It's common knowledge (esp, in the opec nations) we're beyond the tip point for petroleum. Add to that the propoganda campaign to get people to deliberately buy vehicles that would burn as much of that oil as possible to make it worth all that much more...

There is a saying. To control a thing, you must destroy a thing. When humanity relies on that thing to survive, and you control most of what is left, you have a hydraulic empire. And it doesn't take reading Frank Herbert and applying his (supposed) fiction to fact to understand or learn that...

I'm not going to say i feel your pain, but when I h eard about htis (I haven't seen the image) I knew it was so inappropriate. The defense is that it's somehow shows the racism. but it's just too fresh and too fragile. And I'm saying this as someone who makes jokes about racism by making racist jokes. But it's something I do carefully, and I know that I have to be ready to say at any moment. Yes, that was wrong and hurtful. It was not my intent, but it's an ugly thing to say/do and if I caused pain, I am sorry. And I'm not a magazine that gets sold coast to coast either. Maybe that's not enough for my behavior. Oh crap.

Anyway, it was a crappy thing to do, and I can't believe that the editorial staff of a magazine could be that misguided.
