I actually was very careful to just announce that you could win a sofa, because burners might be interested in that... According to the ePlaya rules, I made sure to avoid listing any sort of $$ amount, PayPal links, or anything like that. If you want more info, go to the link. If you don't, don't. And the ONLY reason I left on "this is a smoochdome fundraiser" is so that it wouldn't be misleading.

First of all, this is a 50+ person camp traveling 3000 miles to come to the playa and we have over $8,000 in expenses. So lets not make this personal, shall we? This is not about offsetting my personal expenses as I cover those (and much much much more) to get out there and still manage to have a mortgage and a baby.
Second, I had permission to post this last year, so lay off. The moderator told me I could post it with no $ details. That's why you see it last year, and the year before, and it's still there.

Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.
Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.
Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.
Radical Self-reliance
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.
Radical Self-expression
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.
Communal Effort
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.
Civic Responsibility
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
Leaving No Trace
Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.
Participation
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.
Immediacy
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience.

I just don't see the harm.
Everything that is given away on the playa was paid for by someone in cash or time and energy.
It doesn't all appear by wishing on faerie wings.
Anyone taking a chance on a sofa knows they are giving a gift to make a camp possible.
I've seen their camp and it involves a pretty big dome.
I'm sure it costs something to haul that 6000 miles every year.
If you want to really strike a blow against commerce, buy my NO COMMERCE t-shirts and do some real good fighting evil!

The subject of fundraisers has been argued extensively elsewhere on the eplaya... check out that thread if you want to debate it. This poster obviously took care to follow the moderator's guidelines.

Based off this portion of the TOS, I have to agree with Toolmaker. This post (and the ones from the previous years) are not allowed on this board. Even Mods can be wrong once in a while. This clearly falls under the TOS list of prohibited items.Toolmaker wrote:from the list of naughty things in the TOS

Interesting first post Mr./Mrs. Laughwhileyoucan. Does the words "Sockpuppet" mean anything to you?

I'm not the one who posted this, nor did I post at her request. I'm another NYC burner who heard about this on the NYC list. I haven't been on e-playa for years, and created a new login because Toolmaker's post annoyed me so much that I felt I had to say something. But thanks for your unfounded accusation.capjbadger wrote: Interesting first post Mr./Mrs. Laughwhileyoucan. Does the words "Sockpuppet" mean anything to you?
Honestly, it's "discussions" like this that got me to leave e-playa in the first place. It's one thing to raise questions about the appropriateness of the post, but quite another to make accusations like TM's. Sorry, but I have little patience for self-appointed "ten principles" vigilantes who can't accept the moderators' judgment.

Wait, let me get this straight. You left due to threads like this, and then you came back for the very reason you left? That makes no sense at all.
And what did Toolmaker post that was so bad? Oh no, not the ten priciples and copies of the TOS. Oh wow. Soooo mean.
And oh no! A post to the fact that this has happened two years before as well. Not the truth! Heaven forbid!
Love ya AntiM, but you confused me with this one. How is a camp fundrasier not a way to round up cash to fund the trip (and building, and food, water, etc)?AntiM wrote:Me. I'm the one who let it go through, but because it is a camp fundraiser, not a way to round up cash to fund the trip.

Hahaha, I love Badger :) If my two cents worth a penny, which they're not, I would have to say I always get a funny feeling in my gut when people post offers, promotions, raffles, whatever on her...It just feels wrong (fuck the rules)....And on the other hand, I get a warm fuzzy feeling on here when someone offers valuable shit up for free (including their knowledge)....It just feels good....in fact its this non-commercial model that was one of the first things about BM that I appreciated.... this certainly seems to violate the principle of it...that being said, I have done all sorts of fundraisers locally to raise money for my camp....but none of them involved raffling off a service to be rendered at burningman...I mean that really commidifies the event and violate one of the fundemental cultural legs that BM stands on...in my opinion that is....capjbadger wrote:more of a poke, less of an accusation. :) It was a highly odd first post.
